For those departing for home on the 9th, after a leisurely morning in Chefchaouen you'll head back to Casablanca to stay at The Odyssee, with a transfer to the Casablanca Mohammed V airport the next morning.
You'll enjoy a final meal and pleasant stay at our Casablanca riad, with plenty of time for packing adjustments ahead of the the trip home.
Think the movie Casablanca accurately depicted Casablancan life at that time? It did not (spoiler alert!). But here are some fun facts about this city ~
Casablanca has the tallest minaret in the world at 689 feet high.
It’s also the largest city in the entire Maghreb region with 3.3 million people living in just 149 square miles, making it denser than every major city in the U.S. outside of New York City.
The city is an economic powerhouse on the continent, boasting one of the highest GDPs in all of Africa. Not too bad for a city that only had 20,000 people residing there in 1900!
We begin our day with a stop at Mohammed V Square in the city center.
Sometimes called the soul of Casablanca, the Square is named in honor of the former Sultan. A remarkable feature of the Square is its central fountain, a masterpiece of craftsmanship and Moroccan artistry.
We then head to the Habous Quarter, one of the oldest areas in Casablanca. The district was built by the French in the 1930s, marrying traditional Moroccan architecture with modern facilities and French ideals.
After sight-seeing in Casablanca, we head North to Rabat, Morocco's capital, where we'll spend a restful night at our riad The Repose.
After breakfast, our exploration of the nation's captital begins at the impressive Dar al-Makhzen Palace, the residence of Morocco's King. There we'll see where Morocco's independence was declared in 1956.
In the court of any of Morocco's palaces it is said that you are the personal guest of the King!
On to the magnificent marble Mohammed V Mausoleum, built in traditional Moroccan style, dedicated to the founder of modern Morocco.
Here we find the towering 12th-century red sandstone, Hassan Tower, Rabat's most famous landmark.
Next we visit Kasbah des Oudaias in the old part of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with commanding cliff views of the river and the ocean.
After a full day of sight-seeing, we'll rest again at The Repose ahead of an eastward trip into the heart of Morocco.
This day we travel to two scenic places, the imperial city of Meknes and a serene Roman ruins site called Volubilis.
Volubilis, under Roman rule, was a Berber-Carthaginian city before becoming the thriving capital of Mauretania in 300 BC.
The city was captured by local tribes in approximately 300 AD, the Romans were unable to recapture it due to it's remote location. Much of the ruins were destroyed in an earthquake in 1755.
Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as an exceptionally well preserved example of a large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire.
Meknes is one of the four imperial cities in Morocco, the imperial designation comes from having been at one time the country's capital.
The ruling sultan from 1645 through 1727, Moulay Ismail made Meknes his capital city. His love of horses was renown. The 12,000 horses residing in the Royal Stables lived a life of luxury - one groomer and one handler per horse!
Like Volubilis, much of the stable structures were damaged in 1755. It is remarkable to experience the vastness of what remains and visualize it being seven times larger in its day.
We'll spend the next two nights at Riad Zawiyat in Fes, the cultural heart of Morocco.
In addition to being called the cultural heart of Morocco, it is also known as its spiritual heart - the greatest of the imperial cities lies within the walls of Fes El Bali, the old Fez enclave, the largest intact medieval city.
There are 9,000 narrow alleys in the medina, bustling with schools, mosques, fondouks (business centers), and - amazingly - 200 hammams!
We will have an opportunity to enjoy a hammam (hearty scrub treatment at a spa), hand-selected by our fantastic guide.
Hundreds of craftsmen and merchants make their living in the medina - there will be time to shop! We'll also see the Karouine mosque, the second largest in North Africa and the oldest University in the World.
The Zillig tile factory is not to be missed - you'll dream of redecorating your home with their vibrant and brilliantly crafted work!
It is said that Fes is waiting to be discovered every day. You'll see why after our full day here!
After our second night at the lovely Riad Zawiyat in Fes, we head north to Chefchaouen, Morocco's famous blue city. Almost everything, from the streets to the houses and decoration, is painted in a near luminous deep blue.
You'll experience a chill vibe in this city rising out of the Rif mountains, with more shopping opportunities and, for those feeling energetic, a spirited walk up the steps of the Spanish Mosque.
The mosque is actually a military watch tower, but the Spanish discovered that building it in the style of a mosque meant that the locals wouldn't attack it.
The pace will be slow to match the vibe, and with a picture at every single turn, you'll want to take it slow to take it all in!
We'll stay in Dar Meziana for the night, enjoying a picturesque view of the city around us.
For those who purchased the extension, you are about to experience a completely different aspect of Moroccan culture in Tangier - a city unto itself unique, and entirely inspirational.
Our hotel, Idou Matabala, is a gorgeous resort on the ocean that offer a spa and other activities.
Beyond our hotel, there are many things to explore during our stay.
Did you know that Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States in 1777?
Located in the medina of Tangier, the American Legation is the first American diplomatic public property outside of the United States. Its museum highlights the special relationship between Morocco and the U.S.
Tangier has also been the home or playground of many famous artists, including the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, William Burrows, Paul Bowles, Henri Matisse, and more.
Things to do in Tangier:
Visit the American Legation and its museum
Enjoy a café at El-Hefa Café
Experience the Caves of Hercules
Wander and shop in the medina
Explore the Kasbah, the highest point in the medina
Take a walk on one of Tangier's beaches
On October 11 we'll return from Tangier to Casablanca in the evening, ahead of departures the following day.
After arrival, we'll have our farewell meal and a restful stay at The Odyssee, with plenty of time to prepare for next day departures on October 26.
Solea highly recommends booking an afternoon departure from the Casablanca Mohammed V airport.
