Mombasa Old Town Walking Tour

Duration2-4 Hours

Experience the vibrant history and culture of Mombasa on this guided half-day walking tour. Explore both the main roads and the quieter backstreets as your guide, Humphrey, brings the city’s past to life with rich storytelling and local insight.

Begin at Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once guarded the entrance to Mombasa’s harbor. Walk through its historic stone walls, touch the old Portuguese cannons, and learn about the strategic battles and trade routes that shaped the region.

Continue into the Fort Jesus Museum, where exhibits of ancient artifacts, maps, and preserved relics offer a deeper look into Mombasa’s complex colonial and maritime history.

Next, visit the Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue. Erected in 1952 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s visit, these intersecting aluminum arches are now one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

From there, step into the narrow alleys of Mombasa Old Town. With its centuries-old Swahili architecture, carved doors, and coral stone buildings, the area offers a glimpse into a time when Arab, Portuguese, and Indian influences converged on the East African coast.

Finally, conclude your walk at the bustling Spice Market, where you can explore stalls filled with local herbs, spices, and traditional remedies. Enjoy the sights, scents, and sounds that define the coastal lifestyle.

Travel Tips

Best time to visit: July to October for safari season; December to March for sunny beach days and scuba diving optimal conditions.

Respect local customs: Kenya is culturally diverse—dress modestly when away from the beach or on village visits

Use reef-safe sunscreen: Protect marine life when swimming or diving in the Indian Ocean

Pack light, breathable clothing: Ideal for both warm beach weather and hot inland safaris

Carry Kenyan Shillings: Especially useful for local markets, tips, and small purchases

Pre-book national park entry and safari lodges: Especially during peak season (July–October)

Wear neutral colors on safari: Avoid bright clothing to blend in with the environment

Bring mosquito repellent and take malaria precautions: Especially important in coastal and inland areas

Expect “coastal time”: Things move at a relaxed pace—embrace it

Kenya’s coast and safari experiences offer the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. From the golden beaches of Diani lapped by the warm Indian Ocean to the wild plains teeming with wildlife, every moment feels like a scene from a dream. Whether you’re tracking lions at sunrise or unwinding under swaying palms, Kenya will leave you spellbound and longing to return.
