My name is David Mebane and I am a lifelong traveler that experienced my first international trip as a 2nd grader, and I haven’t stopped since. I founded Fat Tire Tours in Paris, France in 1999 and love showing people around the City of Light. Israel's history is, in many ways, the history of Christianity itself. The land's story begins in the Old Testament, as the promised home of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and later the kingdom of David and Solomon, whose Jerusalem became the spiritual center of the Israelite people. The prophets who foretold a coming Messiah walked this same land, and it was here, centuries later, that those prophecies would be fulfilled.
In the 1st century, Israel became the setting for the life of Jesus Christ. He was born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and began his public ministry along the Sea of Galilee, teaching, performing miracles, and gathering his first disciples in towns like Capernaum. His final days unfolded in Jerusalem: the Last Supper, his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, his crucifixion at Golgotha, and, central to Christian faith, his resurrection. These events, occurring within a single Roman province in a single generation, would go on to shape the next two thousand years of world history.
Following Jesus's death and resurrection, his followers carried his teachings out from Jerusalem, and the early church took root in the very same streets and synagogues where he had once taught. Even as the Roman Empire later destroyed the Second Temple in 70 AD and dispersed the Jewish population, Christian pilgrims continued to travel to the Holy Land, and by the 4th century, Emperor Constantine's mother, Helena, had identified and enshrined many of the sites central to Jesus's life, including the location of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Through the Byzantine era, Israel remained a center of Christian worship and pilgrimage, its churches and monasteries multiplying across Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Galilee. Centuries of shifting rule followed, Islamic, Crusader, Ottoman, each leaving its mark, yet the sacred Christian sites endured, preserved and rebuilt by generations of believers determined to protect the physical setting of their faith's founding story.
Today, Israel remains the place where the Christian story began and where it can still be traced, step by step, from the manger in Bethlehem to the empty tomb in Jerusalem. For families of faith, few destinations offer this kind of direct, physical connection between the pages of Scripture and the places where its history actually happened, a rare chance to walk the same ground together.
