About David Mebane and Kairos Tours

My name is David Mebane and I am a lifelong traveler that experienced my first international trip as a 2nd grader, and I haven’t stopped since. I founded Fat Tire Tours in Paris, France in 1999 and love showing people around the City of Light. That passion has grown to include other incredible destinations around the globe, and is the genesis for Kairos Tours. I don't know every destination on the globe, but I do know several well, and I love to take people with me to create experiences and memories that last a lifetime.

I live in Austin, Texas with my wife Kelly and our son Weston and daughter Caroline. However, we spend as much time as we can elsewhere since there is nothing better than an adventure with family and friends.

From Ancient Roots to Enduring Empires

Your journey through Turkey and Greece explores a region where the very foundations of global civilization were laid. In Greece, pivotal concepts like democracy and philosophy first took root, setting the stage for future empires and intellectual thought. Across the Aegean, Anatolia (modern Turkey) was a legendary crossroads where mighty ancient civilizations, including the Hittites, flourished and left behind astonishing relics that speak of ingenuity and power, creating a profound historical tapestry stretching back thousands of years.

As centuries unfolded, these lands experienced epic transformations, becoming vital centers for successive empires. Greece saw its classical age transition into the powerful Roman and then the glittering Byzantine Empires, which continued to uphold Greek culture. Meanwhile, Constantinople (modern Istanbul) rose as the magnificent capital of Byzantium, later becoming the heart of the vast Ottoman Empire. This period marked a dynamic interplay of diverse cultures and faiths, forming a unique bridge between East and West that deeply influenced the art, architecture, and daily life of both regions.

Today, Greece and Turkey stand as vibrant, modern nations, their deep historical roots powerfully evident. Greece, with its iconic islands and ancient ruins, continues to reflect the spirit of its democratic founders and artistic pioneers. Turkey, straddling two continents, offers a captivating exploration of Byzantine splendor and Ottoman majesty, alongside its lively contemporary culture. Both countries proudly present a rich tapestry of heritage and embody a remarkable resilience, having continuously shaped and redefined the course of civilization.
