Among those barns is the iconic Moulton Barn, often called the most photographed barn in America. Set against the dramatic Teton backdrop, Mormon Row offers a powerful glimpse into the grit, resourcefulness, and enduring legacy of the families who once called this rugged valley home.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is America’s first national park—and one of its most iconic. Established in 1872, it set the precedent for protecting natural wonders for public enjoyment and conservation. Spanning over 2.2 million acres across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, Yellowstone is a geological marvel sitting atop a supervolcano, with half of the world’s geothermal features found within its boundaries.

The park is home to bubbling hot springs, erupting geysers, colorful mud pots, and steaming fumaroles, along with vast meadows, deep canyons, alpine rivers, and rugged mountains. Its diverse ecosystems support abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk, and bald eagles.

From geothermal wonders to sweeping landscapes and unforgettable wildlife encounters, Yellowstone is a place where the earth feels alive—offering a truly one-of-a-kind national park experience.

activity icon

Old Faithful

Explore the Upper Geyser Basin, home to the highest concentration of geothermal features in the world—including more than 150 geysers and a vibrant array of hot springs, fumaroles, and bubbling pools. Wander the boardwalks through this surreal landscape, where steam drifts through the air and colorful mineral deposits paint the ground.

At its center stands the legendary Old Faithful, Yellowstone’s most famous geyser. Erupting with remarkable regularity every 60 to 90 minutes, it sends a towering jet of steam and water up to 135 feet into the sky. Estimated to be over 10,000 years old, Old Faithful has captivated visitors for generations with its reliability and raw natural power. Together, Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin offer a one-of-a-kind window into the dynamic forces that shape Yellowstone.

Grand Prismatic Spring

The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is one of the most visually stunning and iconic geothermal features in the world. Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, it is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world, measuring approximately 370 feet in diameter and over 120 feet deep.

What makes Grand Prismatic truly unforgettable is its vivid rainbow-like coloration. The center of the spring glows a deep, rich blue due to the purity and depth of the water, while the outer edges radiate bands of green, yellow, orange, and red. These colors are created by heat-loving microorganisms called thermophiles, which thrive in the varying temperatures around the spring.

Visitors can view the spring up close via boardwalks or from above on the Fairy Falls Trail overlook, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view. The combination of size, color, and geothermal activity makes Grand Prismatic a must-see natural wonder in Yellowstone.

Vore Buffalo Jump (Possible Stop)

Discovered during the construction of Interstate 90 in the early 1970s, the Vore Buffalo Jump is a remarkable archaeological site located near Sundance, Wyoming. Tribes would strategically drive herds of bison into the sinkhole, where the animals would fall to their deaths or be easily harvested. Over time, layers of bones, tools, and artifacts accumulated, creating a rich archaeological record. Excavations have revealed thousands of bison remains and cultural items, offering insight into the social organization, trade, and survival strategies of Indigenous peoples.

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site in South Dakota offers a powerful look into the Cold War era and the nuclear arms race that defined much of the 20th century. This site preserves two key components of the United States’ once-secret nuclear defense system: a missile silo and a launch control facility. Visitors can explore the Delta-01 Launch Control Center and Delta-09 Missile Silo, gaining insight into the lives of missileers who stood ready to launch nuclear weapons at a moment’s notice.

Through exhibits, guided tours, and preserved facilities, the site illustrates the tension, strategy, and global stakes of the Cold War. It highlights the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) and the immense responsibility placed on a few individuals deep underground. The visitor center provides historical context, personal stories, and interactive displays that make the era’s complex geopolitics accessible and engaging. The Minuteman Missile site serves as a sobering reminder of the past and a call to reflect on the importance of peace and diplomacy in the modern world.

Badlands National Park

Badlands National Park is one of America’s most striking landscapes, a place where dramatic geology meets sweeping prairies. Established as a national park in 1978, it protects nearly 250,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires layered with colorful rock formations that reveal millions of years of geologic history.

The park’s rugged terrain contrasts with its surrounding grasslands, which shelter a rich array of wildlife—bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets all call the Badlands home. Fossil beds found here are among the richest in the world, preserving ancient mammals like saber-toothed cats and three-toed horses.

With its jagged ridges glowing at sunrise and sunset, wide-open skies perfect for stargazing, and trails that wind through otherworldly formations, Badlands offers visitors a chance to step into a landscape that feels both ancient and timeless—a stark yet beautiful testament to the forces of nature.

Wall Drug Store is a beloved South Dakota landmark with a rich and quirky history. Located in the small town of Wall, just outside Badlands National Park, it began in 1931 as a modest roadside pharmacy. To attract weary travelers, the owners famously offered free ice water—a simple gesture that sparked a tourism phenomenon. Over the decades, Wall Drug has grown into a sprawling, 76,000-square-foot attraction that welcomes over two million visitors each year.

Today, Wall Drug is much more than a drugstore. It features family-friendly dining, Western-themed shops, fun photo ops, and free attractions like a giant jackalope and animatronic T. rex. Visitors can browse for gifts and souvenirs, enjoy homemade donuts and buffalo burgers, or simply stretch their legs in a uniquely Americana setting. Despite its growth, Wall Drug retains its original charm and hospitality, continuing to refresh and delight road-trippers just as it has for nearly a century.

Prairie Homestead

The Prairie Homestead, built in 1909 by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brown, is one of the last remaining original sod homes still standing today. Constructed from thick sod bricks held together by grass roots, this humble dwelling reflects the resilience and ingenuity of the pioneers who braved the harsh conditions of the Great Plains. Visitors can step inside the sod house and explore surrounding outbuildings, gaining a rare glimpse into the daily challenges and triumphs of homesteading life.

South Dakota’s prairie heritage is also immortalized in the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her books capture the founding of De Smet, where her family were among the first settlers. She grew up on her family’s homestead, attended De Smet’s first school, worked her first job on Main Street, courted Almanzo across the prairie, and later began her own family there. These experiences, carried throughout her life, remain a powerful window into the pioneer spirit that shaped the American West.

Wind Cave National Park (or Jewel Cave)

With over 140 miles of mapped passageways, this cave system is the sixth longest in the world—and it’s still growing, with about four new miles discovered each year. It is best known for its rare boxwork formations, delicate honeycomb-like patterns of calcite that cling to the cave’s walls and ceilings. These formations are exceptionally well-preserved and considered the finest examples on Earth.

Guided tours take visitors deep underground to explore the cave’s striking geology and learn about its scientific and historical significance. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast or simply curious, this natural wonder offers a rare and awe-inspiring glimpse beneath the Black Hills.

This stop may be substituted for Jewel Cave depending on availability.

Custer State Park

Custer State Park, established in 1912, is South Dakota’s oldest and largest state park, spanning over 71,000 acres in the Black Hills. Named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, the park preserves a landscape of rolling prairies, granite peaks, pine forests, and clear mountain lakes.

The park is best known for its free-roaming herd of nearly 1,500 bison—one of the largest publicly owned herds in the world. Wildlife Loop Road offers the chance to spot bison, pronghorn, elk, bighorn sheep, and the park’s famous “begging burros.” Scenic drives like Needles Highway, with its sharp granite spires and narrow tunnels, and Iron Mountain Road, with its spiraling bridges and framed views of Mount Rushmore, showcase the park’s dramatic beauty. Sylvan Lake, often called the “crown jewel” of Custer, is perfect for hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the stunning Black Hills scenery.

Blending rich history with unforgettable landscapes, Custer State Park remains one of the most iconic destinations in the American West.

Crazy Horse Memorial

The Crazy Horse Memorial, begun in 1948 and still under construction, is the world’s largest mountain carving in progress. Conceived by Lakota leaders as a tribute to their culture and hero Crazy Horse, it stands in the Black Hills as a powerful symbol of Native pride and resilience.

When complete, the monument will depict Crazy Horse on horseback, pointing toward his people’s lands. Visitors can tour the museum and cultural center, which highlight Native American history, art, and traditions while witnessing this monumental work take shape.

Iron Mountain Road (Time Permitting)

Iron Mountain Road, built in the 1930s as part of Custer State Park, is one of the most scenic drives in the Black Hills. Famous for its pigtail bridges, tight curves, and one-lane rock tunnels, the road was carefully designed to showcase the natural beauty of the region. Several of the tunnels perfectly frame views of Mount Rushmore in the distance, creating unforgettable photo opportunities. With its blend of engineering marvels and stunning vistas, Iron Mountain Road is both a journey and a destination in itself.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, carved into the granite cliffs of the Black Hills, is one of America’s most iconic landmarks. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum between 1927 and 1941, it features the 60-foot faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, symbolizing the nation’s founding, expansion, preservation, and development. Originally envisioned on a much larger scale, the project was never fully completed due to funding and wartime constraints, yet it remains a powerful tribute to American history and ideals. Today, Mount Rushmore draws millions of visitors each year to reflect on the nation’s past while taking in the monument’s grandeur and the surrounding Black Hills scenery.
