Born from a deep love for wildlife and conservation, Denise Wagner founded Milele Kenya to create unforgettable safari experiences that go far beyond the ordinary. What started as behind-the-scenes safaris for zoo groups designed to offer a closer look at Kenya’s incredible ecosystems has grown into a range of customized, conservation-focused journeys for all kinds of travellers.
To bring these trips to life, Milele Kenya partners with RAW Africa Eco-Tours, led by fellow wildlife expert Brooke Squires. RAW Africa Eco-Tours is focused on safaris that embrace ethical wildlife viewing and sustainable travel, whilst supporting community and conservation organisations throughout Africa.
With backgrounds in zookeeping, Denise and Brooke offer a unique perspective that brings depth, care, and purpose to every safari. They understand animals, conservation, the connection with local communities, and what makes a wildlife experience truly meaningful.
Every journey is crafted to inspire, educate, and make a positive impact on travelers, wildlife, and the communities you visit.
Action for Cheetahs in Kenya (ACK) is a conservation organization working to protect wild cheetahs in Kenya through a combination of research, awareness, and community participation. Established in 2001 (and more formally under the nonprofit Carnivores, Livelihoods & Landscapes from 2009), ACK carries out field surveys (including Kenya’s first national cheetah survey), non-invasive monitoring, habitat studies, and conflict mitigation between carnivores and people. Programs like Scat Dogs (trained detection dogs for collecting data), COOL Crafts (involving local artisans in sustainable livelihoods), and Ginger’s Hope (focused on reducing disease transmission and improving health among domestic animals) all reflect ACK’s holistic, community-driven approach.
Mary Wykstra is the founder and Executive Director of Action for Cheetahs in Kenya. She began the cheetah conservation work in Kenya in 2001, initially in collaboration with the Cheetah Conservation Fund and the Kenya Wildlife Service. Over time, she founded Carnivores, Livelihoods & Landscapes (CaLL), under whose umbrella ACK operates.
She holds a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and a Master’s in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. She has experience not only in Kenya but also in Namibia, and her hands-on skills include field research, cheetah capture and immobilization, community education, and leadership. Under her leadership, ACK has grown from just two employees to more than 20, and Mary places strong emphasis on empowering local staff and young people in conservation.

“Bringing people to Kenya on safari is amazing because of the links between the local communities and the wildlife. The combination of wildlife, communities and travellers who want to see the real thing is a great combination for tourism and conservation.
