Vagabond Moto presents the Sea to Stone – Otways & Grampians Adventure Ride!
From the wild surf of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road to the ancient stone peaks of the Grampians and the deep green heart of the Otways, Sea to Stone is a 4-day adventure ride designed to capture the best of the state’s southern landscapes.
The journey begins in Lorne, where the Southern Ocean pounds the coastline and riders head inland, leaving the surf behind as farmland backroads lead to Ararat, a goldfields town resting at the foot of the Grampians. The next stage dives straight into the Grampians National Park itself — a mix of gravel ridgelines, sweeping valleys, and mountain lookouts — before rolling westward to Hamilton, with its wide plains and country hospitality.
From Hamilton the route bends back to the ocean, carving southeast towards Port Campbell, home to the iconic 12 Apostles and rugged limestone cliffs that define the Great Ocean Road. Here, the sea takes centre stage once again before the final day delivers a classic finish: a run through the towering gums, fern gullies, and twisting ridge roads of the Otway Ranges, dropping riders back into Lorne where coast and forest meet.
This is more than just a ride — it’s a journey across contrasting worlds. Four days of mixed terrain, country towns, epic scenery, and the perfect balance of dirt, bitumen, and backroads.
Over four days you’ll ride more than a 1100km's through some of Victoria’s most striking landscapes. Leaving the surf at Lorne, the route heads inland across farmland and backroads before climbing into the rugged sandstone ridges of the Grampians. Here, dramatic cliffs, sweeping gravel trails and mountain lookouts set the tone for true adventure riding.
Rolling further west, the open plains around Hamilton stretch endlessly towards the horizon, broken only by winding country backroads and quiet bushland connectors. It’s the calm before the return to the coast, where the journey leads into Port Campbell. Nestled on the Great Ocean Road and home to the iconic 12 Apostles, this stage of the ride delivers one of Australia’s most photographed coastal landscapes — a fitting reminder of the scale and drama of the route.
The final push is a highlight in itself, diving into the lush forests of the Otway Ranges. Towering gums, mossy gullies and twisting ridge roads create a flowing, technical playground for adventure bikes, carrying you back towards the ocean. The ride closes where it began, at Lorne, with the salt air of the Southern Ocean on your face and the satisfaction of having conquered the ultimate coast-to-stone loop.
Expect a balance of flowing gravel, hidden forestry trails, quiet backroads and winding sealed sections that keep each day dynamic and rewarding. Evenings are spent in classic pubs and motels, with hot showers, hearty meals and a cold beer — the perfect reset before another day on the bike.
Minimum 200km fuel range and knobby tyres (Pirelli Scorpion Rally or equivalent) required!
You’ll roll into Lorne on the afternoon before the ride kicks off. This is where you’ll check in with the Vagabond Moto crew, grab your ride pack and get your bike set for the days ahead.
Once the admin is out of the way, we’ll all come together for a casual group dinner at The Lorne Bowls Club. It’s a chance to meet faces old and new, catch up with mates, and share the anticipation for the ride ahead. Just a solid meal and good company before the ride really kicks off!
Welcome Dinner and Sign-on will be held here.

We roll out of Lorne and cruise along the Great Ocean Road, one of the most famous stretches of bitumen in Australia. Not far from town we pass under the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, the timber gateway that marks the official start of the road and the perfect spot for a quick photo before turning inland.
From here the route climbs into the edge of the Otways, with tall gums and fern gullies giving us a taste of what’s to come later in the ride. The forest eventually breaks into open farmland and quiet country lanes as we make our way towards Beaufort, a goldfields town that makes a natural pause. The day winds down with the final run into Ararat, where the first outlines of the Grampians rise in the distance and we settle in for the night.

Day two is all about the Grampians. Leaving Ararat, we climb straight into the sandstone ridges, winding along gravel trails and backroads that cut through the heart of the ranges. Towering cliffs and sweeping valleys set the scene as the ride twists towards Halls Gap, the little town tucked deep inside the national park. It’s the perfect place to stop for a coffee, fuel and a moment to soak up the mountain views.
From Halls Gap the route continues along scenic roads and ridgelines, with lookouts and sweeping bends showcasing the best of the Grampians National Park. Eventually the mountains ease into wide open plains, where fast gravel and country lanes carry us west into Hamilton, our stop for the night. After a big day in the ranges, a pub meal and a cold beer will go down well.

After two big days in the saddle, today takes on a steadier pace as we make our way back towards the coast. Leaving Hamilton, the ride flows southeast through open farmland and rolling backroads before reaching the seaside city of Warrnambool. From there we cut inland again towards Timboon, a small town on the edge of the Otways, known for its dairy country and winding country roads.
The final run drops us back to the Southern Ocean, rolling into Port Campbell along the Great Ocean Road. With the limestone cliffs and the world-famous 12 Apostles just around the corner, it’s the perfect spot to settle in, watch the sun dip over the water and enjoy a relaxed night on the coast sharing a final dinner with everyone before venturing back to Lorne tomorrow!

The final day is all about the Otways. We start with one of Australia’s most iconic sights — the towering limestone stacks of the 12 Apostles rising out of the Southern Ocean. After soaking it in, the route heads inland, climbing into the heart of the Otway Ranges.
From the coast, the ride winds through lush rainforest gullies and twisting backroads, dropping into towns like Gellibrand, where towering gums and mossy ferns line the way. The roads here are made for adventure bikes, flowing ridge to ridge with a mix of gravel and sealed sections that keep the pace lively.
By the afternoon, the tracks and trails bring us full circle, descending back to Lorne on the Great Ocean Road. With the ocean at your side once more, it’s the perfect finish — four days of coast, mountains, plains and forest wrapped into one unforgettable ride.
The ride finishes in Lorne, with the aim of arriving in Lorne around 2 pm.
