Tour to El Escorial & Valley of the Fallen

In the heart of the Guadarrama mountain range, only 50 kilometres from Madrid, stands the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Mount Abantos, its pine forests and the Herrería estate form the natural surroundings of this place, which has its focal point in the Monastery of El Escorial. Its urban layout is composed of a harmonious collection of ancestral homes in the Herrera style, with rationalist avenues and small squares in an earlier style.

The Madrid-region town of San Lorenzo del Escorial, a Historic-Artistic Site, grew up around the Monastery of El Escorial. This architectural gem, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, was ordered to be built by Felipe II in the 16th century to commemorate the Battle of San Quintín. An urban layout slowly developed around it, since the aristocrats and middle classes from the capital had their summer residences erected here. It is, in short, an elegant town rich in architectural heritage and surrounded by mountains and forests.

Discover Ponferrada's Castle and Las Medulas

general icon

Ponferrada

Capital of the region of El Bierzo, is one of the major staging posts on the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela as it passes through the province of León. The historic quarter of this town sits below an imposing castle built by the Knights Templar.

The first records of Ponferrada are as a former citadel in Roman times. From the 11th century, the rise in pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela spurred the appearance of the hamlet of Pons Ferrata, located on the Pilgrim's Route to Santiago de Compostela and named in this way because of the building of a bridge reinforced with iron. In 1178, the King Fernando II of León placed this flourishing settlement under the custody of the Order of the Temple. The Knights Templar used the site of a primitive Roman fortress to build a castle in which they settled and which, at the same time, protected the passing pilgrims.

Las Medulas

This small mountain town marks the natural beginning of the ascent towards Las Médulas, a unique cultural landscape that was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. The two centuries that this type of mining went on, caused the formation of the peculiar relieve of Las Médulas. Red-clay erosion gullies, towers, and underground galleries, all surrounded by chestnut trees, make up this cultural landscape. Peaks higher than 100 metres lead to the centre of the gold mine, the Cueva Encantada (Enchanted Cave) and Cuevona (the Huge Cave).

Cabrales Cheese Cave Visit and Tasting

This tour will take you to visit Cangas de Onis where you'll take a short tour. Then you'll head to Tielve or Sotres, two very small villages near the mountains where the prestigious Cabrales Cheese is produced. You’ll be taken to a cave where this blue cheese is cured and will be given a tasting of different local cheeses.

Also known as Quesu Cabrales or Cabraliego, this is one of the most important blue cheeses in the world. It is made with cow's milk or with goat and sheep's milk, which is more highly valued. Its name comes from the Asturian town where it has been made since time immemorial. With a strong flavour and penetrating smell, it is a fatty cheese, with a natural rind, produced normally with a mix of raw cow's, goat's and sheep's milk. It is aged in natural mountain caves at a temperature of between 8º and 12º for between two and four months. These conditions favour the penicillium mould, which creates the characteristic bluish-green streaks. In addition to being eaten alone, it is highly valued as a base for sauces and for accompanying many haute cuisine dishes. It has been protected by a Denomination of Origin since 1981.

Biarritz & French Basque Coast Tour

Duration8 hours

The French Basque region has got its own identity, posh Biarritz was the European royalty's favourite summer holiday spot and St. Jean de Luz is an enchanting fishing village!

Hendaia:

The longest beach of the Basque Country! After a short stroll along the beach promenade, we will depart to Saint Jean de Luz through the beautiful coastal “La Corniche Road”.

Saint Jean de Luz:

Former Basque Corsairs’ capital, this small fishing village became rich in the 16th century from fishing and whaling. Piracy, added brought wealth to the town. The ‘finest moment’ for the town was in 1660, when Louis XIV married Marie-Thérèse of Spain in the town church – the Basque church of St John the Baptist.

Biarritz:

One of the most posh beach resorts of the Basque Coast. It is a luxurious seaside town and is popular with tourists and surfers. Biarritz also boasts some of the best beaches in Europe. Biarritz’s became more renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais).

The British royal family and European royalty regularly took vacations in Biarritz.

Hondarribia:

One of the most beautiful towns of the Basque Country, it’s medieval old part, is one of the few fortified towns in the Basque Country. Its walls, most of which are still standing and are constantly being restored, give it a special appearance by evoking an epic past and by impregnating every corner, alley and square with aromas, flavors and sounds that take us back to other times. We could also find the typical Basque fishermen houses, with colorful balconies filled up with heaps of flowers.

Kayak - San Sebastián bay

Duration1,5 hours

Experience the joys of sea kayaking through La Concha Bay in a guided tour. Float past historical buildings, paddle through a nature-filled island or take in the panorama of the Donostia skyline from the sea. Beaches of fine sand contrast with sharp cliffs. In our agile boats we can explore the most hidden corners.

The crossing starts at the Ondarreta beach in the La Concha bay. An expert guide instructs us on the basics of security and paddling. Attending his advice we went to visit the most emblematic places of the bay and enjoy the best views of Donostia.

Depending on the desires and the conditions of the sea, we can leave the bay and explore the skirt of Mount Igeldo. It is a mass punished in winter by heavy storms but in summer it shows its most docile face. We are surprised by the contrast between this hostile nature and the kindness of the refined Donostia.

We will finish the trip visiting Santa Clara Island. It is one of the almost virgin redoubts of the city. Only accessible by boat, no one lives in it. Its small beach is crowded in the sunniest days but it remains deserted as soon as the sky clouds.

The lively pier on the pier offers us the opportunity to have an aperitif before returning to the beach.
