Join Heidi Karell for a one-time-only retreat at the serene Kumba Lodge on Mozambique’s breathtaking Tofo Beach. Over six nights, immerse yourself in the rhythm of the ocean — waking to the sound of waves, flowing through daily Ashtanga practices in the open-air shala overlooking the sea, and reconnecting with yourself through nature’s simplicity.
Between practices, choose from three signature experiences — an ocean safari, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, surfing along the coastline, or horse riding on the beach. Spend your afternoons by the pool, savoring fresh, locally inspired meals, and let each day close with a mesmerizing sunset over the Indian Ocean.
This is a journey to unwind, reset, and recharge — guided by an experienced teacher and held in one of Africa’s most soulful coastal sanctuaries.
Heidi Karell is an advanced Ashtanga yoga practitioner. Originally from Finland she has been practicing for over 20 years, establishing a discipline in 2013. She is currently practicing and teaching in Paris where she is based. As a teacher she is encouraging, inspiring and highlights the importance of breath and bandhas. Creating a safe space for each student is important to her.
Having lived in many places and countries she has had the fortune to study under the guidance of many wonderful teachers but the greatest teacher for her remains the practice itself. Yoga gives her strength to face unpleasant moments on and off the mat. She also loves the aspect of indescribable magic when the impossible becomes possible with regular practice.

Thierry Nyfeler founded Munga Plains after a transformative trip to Botswana in 2021. Leaving behind his tech industry role, Thierry created Munga Plains to offer to others the profound disconnection he experienced. Since 2022, he has dedicated himself to building a sanctuary that embodies healing, sustainability, and community.
Community at Heart
Munga Plains is dedicated to the well-being and growth of the local community. Situated on the former tribal land of the Basubiya people, we honor their cultural heritage by hiring local staff, supporting artisans, and collaborating on community projects. Our guests experience local traditions and lifestyles, ensuring every visit positively impacts the community.
Sustainable by Design
Sustainability is at the core of Munga Plains. Our facilities, built with wood, thatching grass, and canvas, have a minimal environmental impact. We use solar power, treat our own water and sewage.
