The Essential Mongolia: Gobi, Waterfall & Monasteries operates from June through September, the most favorable time to explore Mongolia’s diverse landscapes — when the southern desert is warm, and the central valleys are green and accessible.
This program is part of Travel Buddies’ Classic Journey Collection, designed for travelers who prefer comfortable adventure — a balance between scenic overland travel, active exploration, and authentic cultural encounters.
The tour combines the desert’s vast stillness with fertile mountain valleys, creating a journey that feels both diverse and immersive. Expect moderate daily drives (4–6 hours), light hiking (1–3 hours), and short horse and camel rides guided by local wranglers.
A few days include longer travel segments (up to 7 hours including rest stops) to connect key regions, but frequent breaks and roadside visits make the drives enjoyable and photogenic.
This tour’s pace allows you to experience Mongolia comfortably, while still feeling the rhythm of the open steppe — a journey designed for both first-time and returning travelers.
Hotel in Ulaanbaatar – Comfortable City Stay
Your first and final nights are spent at a 3★ hotel in Ulaanbaatar, chosen for cleanliness, comfort, and central location. Rooms include private bathrooms, hot showers, heating or air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and breakfast service.
Most of our partner hotels (such as Premium Hotel, Aurora Hotel, or Millennium Plaza) are within walking distance of Sukhbaatar Square, restaurants, and shops — ideal for exploring the capital independently.
Tourist Ger Camps – Simple Comfort in Nature
Outside the capital, most nights are spent in tourist ger camps — the signature accommodation of Mongolia’s countryside.
These camps are situated near natural attractions such as sand dunes, cliffs, waterfalls, and monasteries.
Each ger (traditional felt yurt) provides:
Twin beds with clean linens and bedding (extra beds available on request)
A small table, chairs, and simple décor reflecting nomadic tradition
Shared hot showers and Western-style toilets in a separate building
Restaurant ger serving freshly cooked meals
220V electricity available in the evenings for lighting and device charging
Heating stove available in cooler months or high-altitude regions
Tourist ger camps are seasonal (May to early October) and vary slightly in style, but all offer safe, clean, and peaceful stays surrounded by nature.
Please note:
Most camps do not provide one-time toiletries (toothbrush kits, shampoo, robes, or slippers), though some upgraded camps may.
Bring your own personal items and towel.
Some camps offer Wi-Fi through Starlink, but connection can be intermittent due to location.
Camps are a highlight of travel in Mongolia — quiet, scenic, and close to nature, yet offering reliable comfort and hospitality.
Nomadic Family Homestay – Genuine Cultural Experience
A special feature of this tour is your overnight stay with a nomadic family in the Orkhon Valley.
This experience gives you the rare opportunity to share the daily rhythm of herder life.
During your stay, you may:
Join your hosts in milking yaks or tending livestock
Taste suutei tsai (milk tea)
Learn about nomadic customs, seasonal migration, and family life
Play traditional games such as shagai (ankle bones)
Guest gers are simple but cozy, typically shared by 2–4 travelers, and furnished with beds, clean bedding, a small table, and a wash basin.
There is no running water or electricity, but a clean eco-toilet is available nearby.
Dinner at the homestay is usually a home-cooked barbecue or dumplings, enjoyed with tea and laughter.
The experience is genuine, humble, and unforgettable — a human connection that captures the heart of Mongolia.
All meals are included as indicated in your itinerary (B – Breakfast, L – Lunch, D – Dinner).
Mongolian meals are simple, nourishing, and freshly prepared using local ingredients suited to each region.
Breakfast:
Bread, butter, jam, eggs, sausage, and tea or coffee
Occasionally pancakes, cereal, or yogurt
Lunch:
Usually a light soup or salad starter
Main course: beef, mutton, or chicken served with rice, pasta, or potatoes
Side of fresh vegetables or pickled salad
Dessert or fruit and tea
Dinner:
Main course: noodle or rice dish with meat
Simple dessert (fruit, yogurt, or sweet dumpling)
Tea (coffee rarely served in rural areas)
At the nomadic family, you will enjoy authentic home-cooked Mongolian food — hearty, flavorful, and prepared over a wood or dung stove.
Dairy and meat are the main staples, while vegetarian meals can be arranged upon request in advance.
Please note that gluten-free options are difficult to provide in remote areas.
Travel Buddies provides 1.5 liters of bottled water per person per day, and additional water is available for purchase at camps or rest stops.
Travel Buddies operates all tours with modern Japanese minivans, including Mitsubishi Delica, Hyundai Starex, or Grand Starex models — known for comfort, durability, and safety.
Vehicles are equipped with air conditioning and maintained regularly.
Road conditions vary:
Major highways between cities are paved, though some sections may have potholes or rough patches.
Access roads to natural attractions (sand dunes, monasteries, waterfalls) are dirt or gravel, often scenic and adventurous.
Daily driving time averages 3.5 to 6 hours, with regular stops for toilets, photos, and refreshments.
Longer days (up to 7 hours) occur when traveling between the Gobi and Central regions.
Every drive is part of the experience — revealing Mongolia’s wide horizons, herds of livestock, and endless sky.
Travel Buddies tours are designed for a balanced and comfortable rhythm.
07:00–08:00 Breakfast at camp or hotel
08:00–09:00 Depart for the day’s destination

On longer travel days, driving may continue for 2–3 hours after lunch, followed by a light walk or sunset activity before dinner.
Internet access in rural Mongolia is limited, offering the perfect opportunity to slow down and reconnect with nature.
Mobile network coverage is available in most towns and along major routes if you use a local SIM card.
Some ger camps offer Wi-Fi via Starlink, but service can be intermittent.
In remote locations, you’ll enjoy a true digital break — replaced by incredible stargazing and quiet evenings.
Your tour will be led by a professional English-speaking Travel Buddies guide, experienced in both cultural interpretation and logistics.
They ensure your journey runs smoothly and help you connect with locals at each destination.
Guides in German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese are available upon request.
During horse and camel rides, local wranglers assist you for safety and instruction.
Travel Buddies guides are chosen for their professionalism, knowledge, and warm Mongolian hospitality.
The best months for this itinerary are June to August, when the Gobi is warm, the valleys are green, and ger camps are fully operational.
Average daytime temperature: +20°C to +28°C (Gobi) / +18°C to +25°C (Central Mongolia)
Nighttime temperatures: typically 10–15°C lower
Weather: mostly dry, with light winds; occasional summer rain or short storms
May and September are cooler but ideal for photography and fewer crowds.
Because Mongolia’s elevation averages 1,500 m above sea level, it’s important to bring layers for variable temperatures.
This is a comfortable, well-paced adventure offering a true sense of Mongolia’s contrasts — desert, steppe, mountains, and waterfalls.
Expect clean and cozy accommodations, hearty meals, long but scenic drives, and genuine human encounters.
Travel Buddies ensures the journey flows smoothly, with thoughtful details, flexibility, and care.
Every guest experiences Mongolia’s essence: the freedom of its landscapes, the warmth of its people, and the peace of its vast horizons.
