Saramacca River

Kayak Expedition
Saramacca River image

Introduction

Join us for an unforgettable journey through one of Suriname’s most captivating and diverse regions.

Paddle roughly 60 km from Pusugrunu to Makaja Pingo as you navigate the diverse waters of the Saramacca River. Once a vital connection between tribal villages, this route was notoriously challenging for traditional korjals (wooden boats). With the introduction of roads about a decade ago, the river was gradually abandoned, allowing nature to reclaim its course.

Today, it offers a rare and untouched wilderness experience, where encountering other travellers is highly unlikely. Keep an eye out for traces of old settlements, whispering stories of the past.

This tour will be guided by an Unlock Nature wildlife guide and a local guide.

Daily River Routine and Wildlife Spotting

Each day we will wake up early to start paddling and have a break around midday to make a nice lunch and relax for a little bit. This is the time to have a nice swim, enjoy the view, do some fishing or sit in the rapids! After the break we will go paddling again. Let's hope we'll spot a capybara, tapir, anaconda and way more! When the sun starts to set we will stop to make our camp for the night.
