Welcome to the Art of Islamic Pattern Granada/Córdoba Field Trip

Our base will be at the Cultural Centre next to the Granada Mosque. Tuesday will be spent in Córdoba and Wednesday will be spent at the Alhambra. There will be 2 sessions each day roughly 10.30am – 1.30pm and 3.30-6pm in accordance to Spanish routine. We recommend orientating yourself around Plaza Nueva in Granada, which is a long square at the base of the valley between the Alhambra and the Albaicin. Most buses arrive nearby and it’s at the foot of the path that leads up to the Alhambra.

Practical Classes Location

Most practical classes will be taking place in the Conference Room - Centro Cultural de la Mezquita de Granada which is next to the meeting point: Mirador de san Nicolas a large square at the top of the Albaicin. Mezquita de Granada, Pza. San Nicolás s/n, 18010 Granada.

10.15am Meeting point, walk to classroom for introductions and orientation. Albaicin tour and historical context with Zaruq Summers. Classroom session with Richard Henry: Introductory Slide Lecture – Geometry and Symbol in the Alhambra. Practical Geometry: 4-fold Symmetry & Tessellation.

10.30am - 1pm Classroom session with Adam Williamson. Slide Lecture - Biomorphs and stucco carving in the Alhambra Palace. Practical session - Introduction to key motifs and repeat patterns using compositional techniques including rotation, tessellation and reflection.

Explore Córdoba's Grand Mosque and Historic Quarter

Travel to Córdoba and Visit Historic Sites

Early start at 8:00am. Meet together at Granada Train Station and travel to Córdoba. Visit to Grand Mosque, Mudejar Church, Synagogue and medieval quarter. Drawing session at Grand Mosque/Cathedral elevation with Adam Williamson. Sunset walk along the Quadalquivir river. Return to Granada approx. 7pm.
