Star-Gazing

The Cederberg is star-gazing heaven. The night skies are beautiful with little or no cloud cover year round, and very little light pollution. And yet we are a mere 2½ hours from Cape Town. Throughout the year the constellations are constantly moving. But the one that stays year round in the Southern Hemisphere, and the one that most people love to see, is the Southern Cross! Come and learn how to find True South with the Southern Cross and witness a couple thousand stars and even some planets with the naked eye.

Bay Bird Island & Walkthrough Museum

Bird Island lies about 100m off the shore of Lambert’s Bay on the Cape’s West Coast. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the blue-eyed Cape gannet up close. As the only accessible spot in the world to see Cape gannets breed, Bird Island is a bird-watcher’s paradise. The island’s hide is perfectly situated to observe their activities first-hand and learn more about their breeding habits. Other birds include the Cape cormorant and the kelp gull. The Walkthrough Museum provides you with the opportunity to explore a variety of sea mammals and sea bird skeletons such as the Cuvier’s beaked whale, Cape fur seal, Cape gannet, Dusky Dolphin, etc.

Rooibos Tea Farm Tour

Rooibos tea is a major industry in the Cederberg. The Cederberg also happens to be the only place in the world where rooibos tea can be successfully grown. So this healthy caffeine & tannin-free tea is exported throughout the world to Europe, Japan and the USA for example. Come on this fascinating Rooibos tea farm excursion to one of the local Rooibos farms. Here you can see how they grow and then process the tea, and afterwards you enjoy a tea-tasting.

Khoisan Paintings/ Rock Art

South Africa probably has the world's richest legacy of Rock Art. The Cape, particularly the mountainous regions from the Karoo to the Cederberg, may have more rock painting per square kilometre than anywhere else in Southern Africa. Transport yourself to the era and life of the Khoisan people, learn their craft, and experience their way of life. This excursion will take an entire day as we either drive or take a helicopter out to the Cerderburg Mountains to reach the caves the San people once called home.

Cederberg Fynbos & Wild Flower Displays

The Cederberg is the northern most point of the Cape’s fynbos biome. Here we see a wonderful mix of montane fynbos with some succulent Karoo species thrown in for good measure. There are over 1000 fynbos plant species, some of which are only found in the Cederberg such as the Clanwilliam daisy. After good winter rains comes the displays of wild spring flowers. This is particularly good in the hinterland of the Cederberg, in the area known as “Agter Pakhuis” and the Bieudouw Valley. Here you may be lucky to see carpet of spring flowers with nemesias, babiana and ixias in great profusion.
