About Madikwe

South Africa's Hidden Gem

A jumble of rocky hills and mountains, seasonal wetlands, wide savannah, and bushveld-covered plateaus, Madikwe Game Reserve attracts wildlife big and small. Here, you can see the Big Five, packs of wild dogs, and more than 300 bird species on daily game drives.

Situated in northwest South Africa, nest the Botswana border, Madikwe is the country’s fifth-largest game reserve. It’s also malaria-free and sees far fewer visitors than Kruger and Eastern Cape reserves. It’s not uncommon to have wildlife sightings all to yourself, whether it's a pride of lions lounging in the shade, a multi-generational herd of elephants splashing into a waterhole, or wild dogs warming up for their evening hunt.

While you’re out exploring the reserve, you’ll pass through a wide range of landscapes. In the west, rocky terrain is interspersed with patches of grassland and wildflowers, while dense bushland and open grassy plains dominate the east.

Madikwe hasn’t always been a game reserve. Its healthy wildlife population stems from a major game relocation during the 1990s, when 8,000 animals were moved to this former farming area for protection. Madikwe is also an example of community-based wildlife conservation, where the land is managed and funded in a way that benefits both wildlife and local communities.

In The Field

Madikwe offers fantastic photographic opportunities with its unique dual ecotone habitat. Elephants, rhinos, and buffalos provide excellent wide-angle shots, while lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs keep the excitement alive.

Game drives occur year-round during peak activity times, early morning and late afternoon.

We will use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser, allowing maximum flexibility for the best photographs. Our group will have a maximum of six guests, ensuring comfort and attentive photographic guidance.

Your drives will be led by experienced local guides, enhancing your appreciation of the wildlife and ensuring an unparalleled photographic safari experience.

At The Lodge

During a delightful midday break at the cozy lodge, we can take the time to focus on photo cataloging and processing. This will include exploring the powerful tools of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, where you can learn how to enhance your images creatively. Additionally, we can also dedicate some time to reviewing photography basics tailored specifically to your needs, ensuring that you gain the skills and knowledge to capture stunning photographs in the future. This is a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the art of photography while enjoying the serene surroundings of the lodge.

The Hide

The original underground hide in Madikwe offers an exhilarating way to observe a diverse array of animals and birds as they gather to drink at the waterhole.

Photographic opportunities are truly endless here, whether you're using a smartphone or a professional camera, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Experience the awe and wonder of watching majestic elephants pass so close that you could almost reach out to touch them. The hide's roof is specially reinforced to safely support wandering elephants, adding to the thrill of the experience.

Open 24/7, the underground hide is easily accessible via a well-maintained path in the lodge garden, ensuring a safe and discreet entry without disturbing the animals.

Clothing

Consider dressing in layers, as the weather can vary from very cold in the mornings to pleasantly warm and sunny during the day. You may find yourself either too hot or too cold on game drives, making layering essential. Don't underestimate how cold it can get on game drives, especially with the wind chill in the early morning.

Neutral-colored clothing is advisable for a safari, as we want to avoid drawing attention to ourselves; the less colorful we are, the better we can blend in.

  • A wide-brimmed hat

  • Lightweight shirts and t-shirts

  • A light waterproof poncho

  • A fleece or hoodie

  • An additional warm jacket or coat

  • A couple of pairs of trousers and shorts

  • A comfy and sturdy pair of shoes or trainers

  • A beanie, scarf, and gloves

  • Sunglasses

Toiletries

Our accommodations provide soap, shampoo, and conditioner, so unless you have specific requirements, these items are often unnecessary.

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Imodium

  • Insect repellent (not always necessary, but handy to have)

Malaria and Vaccinations

Both Johannesburg and Madikwe are in non-malaria areas, so there's no need for antimalarial medication.

Please check in with your local GP or travel doctor to see if you need any vaccinations or boosters before your departure.

general icon

Travel Insurance

It is essential to obtain travel insurance or some form of coverage for the duration of your trip. Participants who do not provide us with policy numbers and contact numbers will be dismissed from the trip prior to departure.

Currency and Tipping

The South African Rand, or simply the Rand, (sign: R; code: ZAR) is the official currency of South Africa. Whilst most of this itinerary is fully-inclusive, and paying by card is widely acceptable throughout the country, it is recommended that you bring rand for tips and gratuities.

When on safari in South Africa, it’s customary to tip as a gesture of appreciation for good service. A common guideline is around ZAR 200 per guest per day for your field guide, about ZAR 100 per guest per day for the tracker (if applicable). At lodges, many guests leave ZAR 100–200 per guest per day for the general staff, often placed in a communal tip box or handed over in an envelope at the end of your stay. Of course, tipping is always discretionary and should reflect the quality of service you received and what you can afford.
