About this trip

It's time once again to learn how to ride Europe in its top motorcycle playground. A week long trip to the Italian Alps to show you how to create your own EU riding adventures. If you want to explore the EU by motorcycle on your own but are a little nervous about how to go about it then this tour is for you. You'll learn about routing, rentals, what to pack, where to stay, how to eat, cultural barriers, cameras, traffic norms, and of course how to get by when you don't speak the language. You should be an intermediate to advanced skilled rider and who views obstacles as a chance for adventure. This event is created and run by 15 year tour operator veteran. Cat will step out of his role as a guide to be your teacher and engage you in some hands on real world training. We are rallying to get some Misfits to join us as well. Maybe even Miss Emma if she's ship shape in Bristol fashion... though she's a doll from further north. The day trips are just suggestions, you can do what your like.

Day 1 - Welcome to Munich and Rider Briefing image

Arrive in Munich, Rider Briefing and Local Exploration

general icon

Arrival in Munich

Munich Airport is organized and efficient with lots of local services. Take a 45min train ride to your hotel or partner with another fellow rider and take a cab. This is the capital of the wealthy region of Bavaria, home to BMW, great beer and a fiercely good football team (soccer). If you have the time we encourage you to arrive a day or two early to walk/eat/drink off that jet lag before you ride. Your hotel is near all things motorcycle with plenty of gear shops. There's grocery, pharmacy and some restaurants nearby our hotel but most importantly it's next to a subway station so getting around Munich will be easy and cheap. In the afternoon attend the riders briefing and get your helmet com unit installed. Tonight join your teacher Cat MacLeod for a Döner or walk down to the local Beer Garden.

Day 2 - Munich to Canazei

Day 2 - Munich to Canazei image

Ride from Munich to Canazei via Bavarian Countryside

Munich to Canazei

Today class begins and it's pretty much hands on fun all day. Today it's watching EU traffic, learning how to use the GPS routes and getting a feel for your front brake for the days ahead. Your route will take you south through Bavarian farm country, to a surprise lunch stop that will showcase how EU is different, up a alps pass and down into the city of Bolzano before heading to our hotel deep in the Dolomites. Learn why this location was chosen, check in like a pro and navigate your way to dinner for another delicious lesson in local food and see first hand why a resort area is your friend.

Day 3 - Learning to Navigate the Dolomites

Ride the Sella Round and Scenic Passes

Learning to Navigate the Dolomites

This is a common run everyone does the first day to figure things out. Some people do it again the next day backwards. It's time to learn to ride like a local, pass like a local and hunt for the best strudel. Today you hit the "Sella Round" for the first time a collection of the most scenic passes in the Italian Alps. Get your video cameras set right because this is the good stuff. Learn the standards of "top of the pass" services and how to ride Alps hairpins. Break up into small groups and ride your pace but meet everyone at the top. Watch for buses and cyclists as this is one of Europes most popular playgrounds.

Day 4 - Passo Manghen Loop

Day 4 - Passo Manghen Loop image

Ride the Challenging Passo Manghen Loop

Passo Manghen Loop

Remember these are examples. Your road book and GPS will have more routes in it than you'll have a chance to do. Okay, if you're ready for a challenge it's time to ride Passo Manghen, the riders pass. It's narrow, it's twisty, it's insane and it's fun. Learn the rear brake trick to bringing in your line tight on hairpin exits. Know how to fix a flat on the road? Maybe it's time to learn. Your riding abilities are starting to pick up and you'll really start enjoying the roads. Remember your front brake rules on downhills. We finish up in Canazei with some interesting dinner options.

Day 5 - Run to Stelvio

Day 5 - Run to Stelvio image

Ride the Legendary Stelvio Pass Adventure

general icon

Run to Stelvio

It's a bit touristy and it's a long ride but for some people riding Stelvio is a must when they go to the Alps. So we'll head out early hit Gavia Pass and the Alps town of Bormio before heading up the famed road. Beware of wet tunnels and the occasional mountain goat. Getting a sausage at Bruno's at the top is a common tradition for local riders. Get some extra stickers to make your friends envious before we take the Tirolean valley road back to Canazei. A client made a trip with the route in reverse... and it's even better.

Day 6 - Timmelsjoch and Garmisch

Day 6 - Timmelsjoch and Garmisch image

Ride Timmelsjoch Pass and Bavarian Canyons

general icon

Timmelsjoch and Garmisch

We'll head a bit further west on our way back and ride over the Austrian toll road of Timmelsjoch. By now you've learned how to get your alps stickers and sample the goulash. After a run through some Bavarian canyons we'll hit the autobahn on motorcycles and use our learned autobahn etiquette with our throttle hand. Tonight who'd like to finish the tour in the old city center of Munich at a proper beer garden, no not that one it's for tourists, a real one.

Day 7 - Departure

Reflect and Depart After Your Adventure

Departure

Hopefully you can arrange an afternoon flight as you'll probably want to sleep in. More important than all the fun you had is you've learned the lesson that riding in Europe isn't that hard and you can do it yourself.
