A glimpse of the capital city of Lima. Learn about Inca history and culture in Cusco. An exploration at Machu Picchu – that would take your breath away (literally). Experience the island lives at Uros and Taquile on Lake Titicaca. 3-day Amazon River experience at Iquitos, which is the largest city in the world that is not accessible by road (as it’s reached only via airplane or boat). See a variety of animals and fishes including piranha, caiman, sloth, anaconda, manates, paiche, woolly monkey, kingfisher, capuchin monkey, marmoset, capybara, etc.

Full itinerary

Monday, August 7
Arrival into Lima. Check into hotel. Welcome dinner in Miraflores. Stay in Lima for 2 nights.

Tuesday, August 8
In the morning, we visit Huaca Pucllana then onwards to Museo Larco. After lunch, we begin a grand tour of the historical center of Lima. Explore Parque de la Reserva after dark. 

Wednesday, August 9
Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport for our flight to Juliaca. A private bus picks us up for a 1-hour drive to Puno, which is on the shore of the largest lake in South America. Drink lots of water to acclimatize as Puno is 12,540 feet above sea level. Stay in Puno for 2 nights. 

Thursday, August 10
We go on an all-day boat tour of Lake Titicaca, including a hands on experience of living on floating reeds of Uros Islands and a short hike on Taquile Island. 

Friday, August 11
9-hour bus ride from Puno to Cusco with stops at Pucará, Raya Pass, Raqchi and Andahuaylillas. Stay in Cusco for 3 nights. 

Saturday, August 12
Take things easy to continue acclimatizing as Cusco is 10,912 feet high. Qorikancha, Cusco Cathedral and Museo Inka are amongst the places we will visit. Optional short hike to Sacsayhuamán. 

Sunday, August 13
We go on a full day tour of Sacred Valley including Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. 

Monday, August 14
Depart at 4:00 am for the 2-hour bus ride to get on a 2-hour train for Chachabamba. Cross the Vilcanota River footbridge. Hike for 6 miles on the Inca Trail, which would take us about 6 to 7 hours, through Winay Wayna and Inti Punku. For those who wish to opt out of the hike will stay on the train towards Aguas Calientes. Overnight in Aguas Calientes.

Tuesday, August 15
At 5:30 am, we take a zig-zagging bus ride up to Machu Picchu.  2-hour exploration through 2 sectors of Machu Picchu – agricultural and urban.  Optional climb up Huayna or Wayna Picchu.  Late afternoon train back to either Ollantaytambo or Poroy before getting on bus back to Cusco late in the evening.  Stay in Cusco for 2 nights.

Wednesday, August 16
Day at leisure in Cusco with possible optional activities on your own.  Mostly to recover and recuperate.

Thursday, August 17
Early morning flight from Cusco to Lima, then onwards to Iquitos, which is the world’s largest city (with a population of 490,000) that cannot be reached by road.  Take a speed boat to visit floating thatch roof houses in Belen on the edge of Itaya River, then continue towards the Amazon River.  After arrival at the ecological reserve, we take a long walk into the rain forest to learn about plants and wildlife. After dinner, we don a pair of rubber boots for a noctural walk. Stay in Iquitos for 2 nights.  

Friday, August 18
An early morning bird-watching walk. See the legendary Hoatzin (Sansho) birds. After breakfast, we visit the Yagua village. Learn how to use blowgun. Learn how to do some dances. After lunch, we go piranha fishing. Visit a small zoo to see anacondas, sloths, caimans, etc. Noctural excursion on canoes after dinner. 

Saturday, August 19
Sunrise bird watching at the edge of the river at Padre Isla town. Take a canoe ride to see Victoria Regia lily pads. After breakfast, we ride on the Amazon River to seek for the gray and pink dolphins. Farewell late lunch / early dinner before transferring to the airport for Lima. After arrival into Lima, we transfer to your international flights back home.

About your Co-Tour Leaders

Wendy, a lifelong resident of western New York, grew up with 8 siblings and attended St. Mary’s School for the Deaf and then RIT/NTID. She served as the college liaison for study abroad programs with RIT Global and as a faculty sponsor for three NTID education abroad programs. After 34 years of service as an engineer and professor, she retired in 2025. People know Wendy as an easy-going globetrotter, hiker, bird watcher, sailor, and skier.

Dan , a true globetrotter where he has visited 91 countries including Bolivia, Cuba, Morocco, Myanmar, North Korea and Oman. He has also presented at Deaf Youth Leadership Camp in Germany and Thailand as well as team-coordinating an exchange program between two deaf schools in Kentucky, USA and Kamensk, Russia.

  • Significant walking expected during the tour. Moderate physical fitness is required. All participants will be expected to be able to carry their own luggage.
