Trip Description: Emerald Isle DeTour

Our first "all-Ireland" Emerald Isle DeTour invites you on a journey unlike any other — through a land where time seems to pause and tradition still shapes daily life. Here, ancient folklore isn’t just remembered; it’s woven into the very fabric of the landscape, echoed in the music, savored in the food, and shared in the easy warmth of its people.

From the sweeping heights of the Wicklow Mountains to the charm of quiet coastal villages, breathtaking vistas stretch as far as the eye can see. We’ll travel winding country roads lined with lush green countryside, where every bend reveals another postcard-perfect scene — perhaps even a rainbow arching across the sky.

Along the way, we’ll explore roadside ruins and storied castles steeped in legend, each stone whispering tales of centuries past. Evenings will find us immersed in the lively spirit of local pubs, enjoying friendly banter, traditional music, and pints poured with pride.

We’ll savor delicious regional cuisine, indulge in time-honored flavors, and experience Ireland not just as visitors — but as welcomed guests. The warmth and generosity of the Irish people create connections that linger long after the journey ends, leaving an imprint on the soul.

Your Digital Itinerary

Prior to your trip, each guest will receive an email invitation to download our digital itinerary onto your smartphones or computers. That version of the itinerary will be more detailed than the website version that you are viewing at this time. It will eventually include flight information, departure times, meeting points, helpful tips on what to pack, information about money, hotel contact information, and more.

Packing Tips

Pack light — and think in layers!

My best packing advice? Pack your bag… then take out at least a third. It’s so easy to overpack “just in case,” but if you stick to smart basics and versatile pieces, you’ll have everything you truly need. And on the rare occasion you forget something, you’ll easily find it once we arrive.

October in Ireland is generally mild, making layers your best friend. Mornings tend to be crisp and fresh, then comfortably warm as the afternoon sun rises higher. Choose wardrobe pieces that mix and match easily — light sweaters, long sleeves, and a weather-friendly jacket will carry you through the day.

A sturdy pair of comfortable walking shoes or casual sneakers is typically all that’s needed for our explorations. And don’t forget a lightweight sock cap — perfect for breezy coastal moments or a passing rain shower.

Since our journey is centered on relaxed exploration, the overall vibe is comfortably casual. Think practical, polished, and ready for adventure — without weighing yourself down.

general icon

Extras

All of our accommodations will have hair dryers.

We recommend bringing a Universal Travel Adapter. Most all now have not only plug-in adapters but also USB & USC plug-ins.

Laundry service will be available at most all our stops for an additional service fee.

Ireland uses Euros for currency. Currency can easily be obtained via bank arms in Ireland and most all retailers now take card or mobile tap to pay as well.

A Journey Through The Wicklow Mountains To Glendalough

We waste no time upon arrival, departing the airport and heading straight for the breathtaking Wicklow Mountains — the largest continuous upland region in Ireland, just south of Dublin. Here, sweeping panoramic views unfold across vast heather-covered moorlands, dramatic glacial valleys, and serene, mirror-like lakes that capture the ever-changing Irish sky.

Nestled within this spectacular landscape lies the enchanting Glendalough Monastic Site, a 6th-century settlement founded by St. Kevin. Set in a valley of two lakes, its ancient round tower and weathered stone ruins offer a powerful glimpse into Ireland’s early Christian heritage.

After a morning filled with fresh mountain air and exploration, we’ll gather for a hearty pub lunch before continuing on to Slane in County Meath, where we’ll settle in for our first few nights and begin to truly unwind into the rhythm of the journey.

The rural Irish Pub...

There will be plenty of chances to step back in time as we cross the thresholds of Ireland’s most iconic pubs along our journey. Today, we’ll be calling in at one of my personal favorites — O'Connells on the Hill.

An Irish pub is about far more than simply ordering a drink. It’s the heart of the community — a place where neighbors gather to check in on one another, where the latest local news (and a bit of gossip) is shared, and where friendly banter flows as easily as the pints. And of course, there’s always great fun to be had with a few curious “blow-ins” like us joining the conversation!

Exploring Slane Village

Today, we’ll explore on foot — some moments together, and some time to wander at your own pace.

Our morning begins with a guided visit to Slane Castle. Perched above the River Boyne, this grand estate has been home to the Conyngham family since 1703. Originally owned by the Fleming family, the property changed hands after the Williamite confiscations, adding layers of history — and more than a few scandalous legends — to its storied walls.

The present 18th-century Gothic Revival castle, built in the 1780s, is as renowned for its architecture as it is for its atmosphere. Its sweeping natural amphitheater has welcomed some of the world’s biggest rock acts since the 1980s, blending centuries of heritage with unforgettable modern moments.

Hill of Slane

Just a ten-minute walk above the village rises the Hill of Slane. From its summit, sweeping views stretch across lush green countryside — and on a clear day, all the way to the sea.

This sacred hill is best known as the place where Saint Patrick lit his Paschal fire in 433 AD, boldly defying the High King at Tara and marking the arrival of Christianity to the Emerald Isle.

Today, the site still bears the atmospheric ruins of a 6th-century monastic settlement, later joined by a Franciscan monastery and a 16th-century college — layers of devotion and history etched into the landscape. Yet the hill’s story reaches back even further. Just beyond lies an ancient mound, believed in legend to be the burial place of Sláine, a formidable leader of the Fir Bolg and said to be Ireland’s first High King — the very figure from whom the village takes its name.

A place of sweeping beauty, deep history, and undeniable magic.

A Journey Through Gaelic Kingdom of Laigin (Leinster Region)

According to early folklore, the Kingdom of Leinster was founded by the partly mythical King Úgaine Mór, and the region is said to have served as one of Ireland’s ancient capitals. Blessed with fertile agricultural soil, an extensive coastline dotted with safe natural harbors for ships arriving from mainland Europe, and abundant fresh water and natural resources, the area became a natural gateway to Ireland. Over the centuries, it attracted not only the island’s earliest tribes but also later arrivals such as the Vikings, the Normans, and the English.

Throughout today’s journey, we’ll stop at a variety of scenic and historic sites—so be sure to have your cameras ready!

activity icon

Rock of Cashel

A visit to Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary brings you to one of Ireland’s most spectacular historic landmarks—a dramatic hilltop fortress that became a major ecclesiastical center in 1101.

Yet the story of this ancient site reaches back far beyond its church history. Local folklore tells that Saint Patrick banished Satan from a nearby cave, and as the Devil fled, he bit a chunk from a mountain and spat it out onto the plains of Cashel, forming the craggy hill long known as the Devil’s Bit.

A Taste of Cashel

We will visit one of Ireland’s most acclaimed and award-winning cheese producers for a guided tour and tasting experience. As the creators of Ireland’s first farmhouse blue cheese, they’ve earned international recognition for perfecting a creamy, buttery, and wonderfully approachable style found nowhere else.

During our visit, we’ll tour the working farm and creamery to learn about the cheesemaking process, followed by a tasting of their full range of sheep’s and cow’s milk cheeses.

Day 6: Colorful Coastal Kinsale image

A Day of Self Exploration in Historic Kinsale

Today is yours to relax, wander, and discover the charm of Kinsale at your own pace. Often called the “Irish Riviera,” this vibrant seaside town is celebrated for its beautiful, sheltered harbor and its reputation for some of Ireland’s most delightful weather.

Your Travel Director will be on hand with plenty of suggestions, detailed maps, and personal recommendations to help you make the most of your day exploring this colorful coastal gem.

Kinsale is a picturesque harbor town in County Cork, first recorded in written history in the 6th century, when a monastic settlement was established and the town began developing as an important trading port. By the 10th century, Vikings had taken control of the harbor, and by the 13th century Kinsale had grown into an Anglo--Norman medieval town—its strategic port making it highly prized for centuries.

In 1601, Kinsale became the focal point of a dramatic chapter in Irish history. A Spanish force arrived to support Gaelic leaders resisting English rule, culminating in the pivotal Battle of Kinsale. Despite local alliances and Spanish assistance, the English navy prevailed, marking a turning point and the beginning of the decline of Gaelic Ireland.

In the years that followed, Kinsale served as a major Royal Navy base. Its impressive 17th-century forts—still standing today—remain a powerful reminder of its strategic importance and are ready for you to explore.

A highlight for many visitors is the chance to ring the famous Shandon Bells yourself, following a brief introduction to their musical and historical significance—an unforgettable, hands-on connection to Cork’s heritage.

A visit to one of Ireland’s longest-inhabited—and most haunted—castles promises a journey into the island’s darker past. Leap Castle has a turbulent and bloody history, having served over the centuries as a fortress, family home, and even a tomb.

Built in the early 1500s atop the remains of an earlier stronghold—and on what is believed to be an even more ancient sacred site—Leap Castle is steeped in legend. Tales of druids, magicians, and restless spirits surround its stone walls, making it a place as fascinating as it is spine-tingling.

Visit "The Land Before Time"

A visit to the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre reveals the largest, oldest, and most sophisticated Iron Age roadway of its kind in Europe. This remarkable feat of engineering demonstrates how ancient communities overcame the challenges of Ireland’s harsh and unforgiving boglands.

Originally constructed in 148–147 BC, the Corlea Trackway is a 2,000-year-old oak plank road—known as a “togher”—stretching nearly one kilometer in length. Though it had lain hidden for millennia, it was only accidentally rediscovered a few decades ago. Today, a preserved section offers an extraordinary glimpse into Iron Age ingenuity and daily life.
