Hotel Pick-Up in Edinburgh
Your Outlander adventure begins with a relaxed hotel pick-up in central Edinburgh. Meet your friendly driver-guide, settle into your Mercedes vehicle and leave the city behind as you start following the trail of the Outlander TV series.
Midhope Castle – Lallybroch
Your first major stop is Midhope Castle, the filming location for Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home. Walk through the courtyard, stand beneath the famous archway and capture iconic photos outside Lallybroch. Although the interior is not accessible, the exterior alone is instantly recognisable to Outlander fans.
Blackness Castle – Fort William
Continue to Blackness Castle, a 15th-century fortress on the Firth of Forth. In Outlander, it appears as Fort William, the garrison where Captain Jack Randall holds Jamie. Explore the ramparts, courtyards and towers, and enjoy sweeping views across the water. Your guide will point out specific areas used in the series and share the darker stories behind the scenes.
Linlithgow Palace – Wentworth Prison
Next, visit Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots and filming location for Wentworth Prison. Wander through atmospheric corridors and great halls while your guide explains how the production team transformed these ruins into one of the most intense settings in the show.
Light snack or early lunch
You’ll usually have time here for a comfort break and a light snack or early lunch, depending on the day’s schedule.
Scenic Drive – Stirling Castle and The Wallace Monument (Pass-By)
Leaving Linlithgow, your route continues through central Scotland with views of Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument from the road. Your guide will share the wider history of the Wars of Independence and how this landscape shaped Scotland’s story.
Doune Castle – Castle Leoch
Arrive at Doune Castle, known to Outlander fans as Castle Leoch, home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan. Explore the great hall, courtyard and tower, and listen to tales from Outlander, Monty Python and Game of Thrones, all of which have used this castle as a filming location.
Culross – Cranesmuir and Claire’s Herb Garden
Your final main stop is the beautifully preserved village of Culross in Fife, used extensively in Outlander as Cranesmuir. Highlights include: The Mercat Cross and surrounding square, where several key scenes were filmed; the exterior of Culross Palace, whose gardens stand in for Claire’s herb garden; cobbled lanes and ochre-washed houses that feel like stepping back into the 18th century.
Afternoon coffee in Culross
Depending on timing, Culross can also be a lovely place for an afternoon coffee or a relaxed wander before the drive back.
Return to Edinburgh
After a full day immersed in Outlander locations and Scottish history, sit back and relax as your driver-guide returns you to your accommodation in Edinburgh.
