January is one of the best months of the year for diving in the Maldives. Calm seas, warm water, and crystal-clear visibility make it ideal for accessing remote atolls and enjoying smooth crossings.
Typically 25-40 metres, especially in the deep south
27–28°C water temperature
Calm seas
Moderate to strong currents at channel dives, perfect for drift diving and pelagic encounters
27 - 30 degrees celcius
Sunny days (dry season)
Light winds from the north east
Huvadhoo Atoll is one of the largest and most dramatic atolls in the Maldives, renowned for its deep channels, strong currents, and explosive pelagic action. Diving here is all about adrenaline‑charged channel dives, where nutrient‑rich currents attract an incredible concentration of big marine life. Expect frequent encounters with grey reef sharks, silvertips, schools of eagle rays, tuna, and barracuda, with regular sightings of hammerheads, tiger sharks, whale sharks, and manta rays. Less‑visited and lightly dived, Huvadhoo delivers raw, untamed Maldives diving at its best.
Dive sites visited may vary depending on conditions, but commonly include:
Kooddoo Kandu – Fast‑moving channel dive with strong shark activity
Nilhandhoo Kandu – Grey reefs, silvertips, eagle rays, and dense fish life
Nilandhoo Wall – Stunning wall dives with pelagics cruising the blue
Dhevvadhoo Kandu – One of the most action‑packed channels in the Far South
Viligili Kandu – Excellent drift dives with schooling fish and sharks
Neykurendhoo Thila – Coral formations with reef life and passing pelagics
Fuvahmulah is one of the most iconic dive destinations in the Maldives, world‑famous for its consistent tiger shark encounters. Unlike traditional atolls, this isolated island rises from deep ocean waters, creating a unique environment where pelagic species gather year‑round. Dives here are conducted along steep drop‑offs and cleaning stations, offering close, reliable sightings of tiger sharks, often accompanied by thresher sharks, oceanic blacktips, silver tips, hammerheads, and schooling reef sharks. Add to that manta rays, whale sharks, and even mola mola on rare occasions, and Fuvahmulah delivers some of the most thrilling big‑animal diving in the Indian Ocean.
Dive sites are chosen based on conditions to maximise encounters and safety, but commonly include:
Tiger Harbour – Legendary site for close, reliable tiger shark encounters
Farikede – Cleaning station attracting multiple shark species
Thoondu Wall – Deep wall dives with pelagics cruising the blue
Fuvahmulah Kandu – High‑energy currents and passing big fish
Mada Devara – Diverse shark sightings and dramatic underwater terrain
NOTE: Tiger Harbour (formerly Tiger Zoo) is a standout Fuvahmulah dive, famous for its resident tiger sharks. These guided, stationary dives deliver close‑up encounters—often with multiple tigers circling—making it an unmissable thrill for adventurous divers. A fee of USD$30 per dive applies.

Addu Atoll offers a unique and diverse contrast to the high‑energy channel dives of the Far South. Known for its clear water, healthy reefs, and relaxed dive profiles, Addu is especially famous for manta ray encounters, with large numbers visiting cleaning stations year‑round. The atoll also features impressive coral formations, WWII shipwrecks, and an abundance of reef life including eagle rays, reef sharks, turtles, schooling fish, and occasional whale sharks. With gentler currents and longer bottom times, Addu delivers scenic, wildlife‑rich diving and is the perfect way to round out the expedition
Dive site selection depends on conditions, but commonly includes:
Manta Point – Reliable manta ray cleaning station with close‑up encounters
British Loyalty Wreck – 130m long Historic WWII oil tanker covered in coral and fish life. Lying on its stern at a depth ranging from 16 - 33 metres.
Shark Hotel – Reef sharks, turtles, and bustling fish activity
Kuda Kandu – Channel drift with rays and schooling pelagics
Gan Inside Reef – Beautiful coral gardens and macro life

The Far South itinerary is suitable to experienced divers who are comfortable diving in currents. Conditions in the southern atolls can be challenging, with deep channel and wall dives, depths averaging 25–30 m, and strong or unpredictable currents. Divers must be confident diving as an independent buddy team.
To join this itinerary, divers must have:
Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent)
Minimum 50 logged dives including 10 logged dives in the last 6 months
Previous experience in currents
Confidence with drift dives, negative entries, and SMB deployment
Nitrox certification strongly recommended
(SSI Nitrox courses are available onboard if needed)
Must carry a reel and SMB on every dive
This incredible region rewards confident divers with some of the most exciting diving in the Maldives
Diving Emergencies
There are currently no hyperbaric chambers in the southern atolls or doctors who are qualifi ed to deal with a diving incident. The largest and longest operating recompression chamber in the Maldives is on Bandos Island (15 minutes by speedboat from Malé); others are located at ADK Hospital in Malé, Kuredu Island Resort (Lhaviyani Atoll), Kuramathi Resort (North Ari Atoll) and Kandima Maldives Resort (Dhaalu Atoll), which is the closest to Huvadhoo. Inspirational Diving Experiences
IMPORTANT: Transfer from southern atolls to any of the available chambers is likely to require emergency evacuation by speedboat, which needs to be paid for at the time it is required. Alternatively, such an emergency may result in the curtailment of the liveaboard itinerary for Maldives Master to divert to the nearest chamber. It is your responsibility to ensure that your insurance will fully cover all eventualities and reimburse all evacuation costs, as well as recompression chamber and/or hospital treatment.
NOTE: In September 2025, a new state-operated chamber was opened on Guraidhoo Island in Thaa Atoll with plans to open additional facilities in Addu, Fuvahmulah and Huvadhoo before the end of 2026.
Prices are subject to currency fluctuations and changes in supplier rates, including any fuel tax surcharges. The final price will be determined upon payment of the balance. This pricing estimate is based on the NAB Exchange Rate of 1 AUD to 0.69041 USD as of March 2026.
Travel insurance is mandatory.
All divers must hold dive evacuation insurance, such as that included with Diver Alert Network (DAN) membership.
The price excludes Tiger Harbour dive fee of $30USD per dive. This needs to be paid in cash, using USD notes in excellent condition.
Full Terms and Conditions are provided as part of the booking form and must be acknowledged prior to booking.
