John Leyendecker
Holy Family School of Faith, Director of Mission, Ohio
Having encountered Jesus in the Eucharist, John became Catholic in 1999 after a very prodigal life. Witnessing a family tragedy at 12 years old lead him to a life of vice and confusion. It is from this place of brokenness that John shares what Christ has done in his life. He studied classics and theology at Xavier University and has done graduate work at the Athenaeum of Ohio.
Working as a full-time youth minister for four years, seven years as a Team Director for FOCUS, and training people across the country in evangelization and discipleship has equipped John and made him even more passionate for the work of the New Evangelization.
John joined the School of Faith team July 2014 and currently, he and his wife, Lisa, reside in Cincinnati area with their nine children.
Participation in the final 100 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago requires a high level of physical stamina, mobility, and overall health. Pilgrims should be capable of walking approximately 12–18 miles (20–30 km) per day over multiple consecutive days on varied terrain, including uneven paths, inclines, cobblestones, and rural trails, and in potentially hot, cold, or wet weather conditions.
By registering for this pilgrimage, the participant affirms that:
They are in good physical condition and medically able to undertake sustained daily walking over multiple days.
They have consulted with a physician if they have any medical conditions that could impair their ability to safely complete the required distances.
They understand that medical facilities may not be immediately accessible along portions of the route.
They assume full responsibility for their physical preparedness and any health-related risks associated with participation.
Participants with significant mobility limitations, uncontrolled medical conditions, or recent surgeries are strongly discouraged from registering for this portion of the pilgrimage.

Touch down at Lisbon Airport where your pilgrimage begins. Depart on a scenic drive to Fátima with a special stop in Santarém, a historic city known for its charming streets and rich heritage. Take in the sights and perhaps visit the Church of the Holy Miracle before continuing your journey. Arrive in Fátima, one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the world. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy a welcoming dinner. This is your time to reflect and prepare for the spiritual journey ahead.
Spend the morning in Fátima, exploring the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima and Valinhos and Aljustrel. We will celebrate Mass. Enjoy lunch on or your own or continue to explore the sanctuary.
In the afternoon we travel North to Tui, a town straddling the border between Portugal and Spain. The journey takes us through picturesque landscapes, setting the tone for the days to come. Enjoy dinner and settle into your accommodations in Tui, a town rich in history with its impressive cathedral and medieval streets.
Begin your pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago with a gentle 17 km walk from Tui to O Porriño. This stage takes you through peaceful woodlands and along the Louro River, offering a mix of natural beauty and quiet contemplation. After reaching O Porriño, you'll be transferred back to Tui. Return to Tui for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, transfer by bus to continue your walking pilgrimage from O Porriño to the coastal town of Vilaboa. This 23 km stage is a bit more challenging, but the reward is worth every step. Enjoy a delicious dinner and relax in your accommodation, reflecting on the day’s journey.
Today’s shorter walk of 13 km takes you from Vilaboa to the historic city of Pontevedra. Cross the ancient Roman bridge and enter a city filled with architectural beauty and rich history. After dinner, take some time to explore Pontevedra’s charming old town or simply rest and recharge.
After breakfast set out on a 23 km walk from Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis, a town famous for its thermal springs. The route takes you through scenic countryside, vineyards, and peaceful villages. Relax in your accommodation after dinner, perhaps with a soothing visit to the thermal baths, a tradition in Caldas de Reis.
After breakfast, continue your pilgrimage with a 18 km walk to Padrón, a town with deep connections to the Apostle St. James. The route offers beautiful rural landscapes and the chance to visit the church where St. James’s body was believed to have been brought ashore. Savor a well-earned dinner and enjoy your stay in Padrón, a town rich in Galician culture and history.
The final leg of your pilgrimage covers 25 km from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela. As you approach the city, anticipation builds, culminating in your arrival at the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago, the spiritual and emotional highlight of your journey. Celebrate your accomplishment with your fellow pilgrims over dinner to share your experience.
Enjoy exploring Santiago de Compostela at leisure. You will come together as a group to share your experiences, attend Mass and enjoy a beautiful farewell dinner.
After breakfast, transfer to Santiago Airport. As you depart, carry with you the memories and spiritual fulfillment of your pilgrimage, a journey that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home. Your pilgrimage ends, but the experience and reflections will remain with you forever. Safe travels!
