This gorgeous and wearable collar gets its name from the Bohemian countryside it reminded us of. While intermediate, it is the perfect project for someone with a basic knowledge of bead weaving. Expect to get a good portion accomplished during class!
The Spiral Staircase Bracelet features lentil beads spiraling around your wrist in a counted kumihimo pattern with two sizes of seed beads.
Exploring the intersection of color, math, and engineering, Rebecca Ann Combs has been pushing the bounds of what is possible in beaded kumihimo for more than sixteen years. She came upon the art of kumihimo after opening a bead store in Arizona, finding its structure and intricacies both calming and rich with possibilities. The rules, rhythm, and patterning of kumihimo satisfy her need for control in an out-of-control world, and now manifests in increasingly complex designs.
Combs’ work has been featured at Museum of Beadwork in Portland, Maine and she is the author of three best-selling kumihimo books, Kumihimo Basics & Beyond, Kumihimo Braiding with Beads, and Kumihimo Jewelry Simplified. Although she warns all of her readers and students that kumihimo is addictive, she delights in getting them hooked. Lauded for detailed, clear instructions, Combs teaches beading retreats and workshops internationally.
When she isn’t braiding you’ll find her enjoying afternoon tea or hiking in the Arizona wilderness. Find her kits and teaching schedule at www.DesignAndAdorn.com.
Expanded Artist Statement
My work begins with an emotional response to the natural world: the glint of light on water, the curve of a leaf, the alert tilt of a bird’s head. Landscapes and animals are my primary subjects, but what I’m really chasing are patterns, textures, and the stories they suggest. Beads are my language for telling those stories.
Each piece is constructed from thousands of glass beads, carefully placed and layered to create a cohesive image. I select beads not only for color, but for how they catch light, how they sit next to each other, and how they feel under the fingertips. The process is puzzle-like and meditative—every bead has a job to do, and the composition only works when all of those small decisions add up.
My technique breaks from traditional beadwork. Instead of stringing beads, I allow them to interact freely on the surface, creating tactile, durable mosaics that feel alive and in motion. This approach elevates beads from decorative accents to the primary structural element of the artwork.
Through these bead mosaics, I hope viewers experience both wonder and recognition: the shimmer of a wave they’ve stood beside, the gaze of an animal they’ve encountered, the feeling of standing under a vast, changing sky. Ultimately, my goal is to celebrate the beauty and complexity of nature and invite people into a more playful, tactile relationship with art.
Help take beads where they have never gone before. How to create beautiful bead mosaic art easily while having fun and letting your creative juices flow. In this beginner course you will learn techniques to get you started creating bead mosaics that look like stained glass art. Sabrina’s innovative techniques are easier and much faster than you think and will give you a freedom with beads you never thought possible. During this workshop you will complete a personalized 8x10 seed bead project and learn new and creative ways to get beads working together no matter the shape or size. We are making jewelry for your walls instead of your body!
Creating life with beads. Lets make animals comes to life with texture and shine using bugle beads in a unique way. Have you ever wanted to create dimensional 2D artwork using beads? In this more advanced workshop Sabrina will teach students special glueing techniques that allow bugle beads to mimic feathers and fur while creating beautiful animal mosaics that are interactive and immersive works of art. During this workshop you will get well started into an 5x7 Bird mosaic project that you can finish at home with confidence in the techniques you learned to get started.
Toolkit, good for both classes - TOOLS WILL BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THEN PICTURED!
Millions of Miles, One Passion
From a 12-Year-Old’s Dream to a Global Bead Authority
The story of Da Beads began in the late 1980s on a family vacation to New Mexico. With $200 worth of beads and a 12-year-old’s curiosity, a lifelong passion was born. By junior high, I was importing from India and Bulgaria; by high school, I was sourcing sterling silver and glass directly from the islands of Indonesia.
Since then, I have flown over 3,500,000 miles across the globe—equivalent to circling the Earth 140 times. From the mountains of Nepal to the vibrant markets of Africa, I’ve spent the last 35+ years hunting for the perfect bead. I've also been a staple at the Tucson wholesale shows for 30 consecutive years, building a reputation for quality that is recognized worldwide.
Global Relationships, Premier Partnerships
In 1998, I made my first trip to the Czech Republic, and it quickly became the heart of my business. Over the decades, I’ve built deep, lasting friendships with factory owners and master manufacturers there and across the world.
Today, I leverage these long-term relationships to supply the industry at every level. Da Beads is proud to partner with:
Local Bead Stores & Craft Retailers: Providing curated inventory for brick-and-mortar shops.
Online Resellers: Supplying the digital marketplace with high-demand treasures.
JTV (Jewelry Television): Bringing world-class quality to a national television audience.
By working directly with the source, I ensure the highest quality beads are accessible to the entire creative community at the best possible prices.
Where Art Meets Business
I’ve always believed that the best bead business requires a balance of "right brain" creativity and "left brain" strategy. Every strand I source is selected not just for its market value, but for its artistic potential. My goal is to bridge the gap between global commerce and fine art, ensuring every piece in the collection meets the highest standards of color, texture, and craftsmanship.
Experience the Journey — Live!
You can join me, Rebecca Combs & Sabrina Frey on my next tour to the Czech Republic, here we experience the entire bead manufacturing process learning how these custom beads come to life. It’s here that we will see how colors and coatings mix, share design ideas with factory owners, and give you a first look at some of the new production coming to market in the USA in 2027.
