Breathtaking crossing of the High Atlas and its Berber villages by one of the highest passes of Morocco and the most important link between Marrakech and the desert, the Tichka pass (2260 m). This stage offers breathtaking views over the valleys. Shortly after the top of the pass you branch off into a side valley. Here, sheltered from view enthroned at 1,800 m altitude, the imposing Kasbah of Telouet, built between the XVIIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries, it is a place steeped in history. Despite the dilapidation of this building, which was once the seat of the Glaouis, one of the most powerful Berber tribes, the ancient palace remains impressive. The roof terrace offers a magnificent view of the High Atlas and the village of Telouet. Through the fertile valley of Ounilla you descend to the plain of Ouarzazate, following the small river surrounded by fields and picturesque villages. As you approach Aït Benhaddou, your destination of the day, the landscape becomes more and more arid. This ksar (fortified village), one of the most imposing in southern Morocco dating from the 14th century, with its adobe houses and kasbahs, its towers and warehouses, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It has been the backdrop for many films, including "Game of Thrones", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Babel", "Gladiator" and "Jesus of Nazareth". Stroll through the narrow streets and stairways that wind through this labyrinth. You will get an idea of the vernacular architecture and the way of life of the families who lived and live in these interlocking earthen kasbahs. Sportsmen climb to the top of the hill to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings
After breakfast departure for Ouarzazate and stop in front of the Kasbah of Taourirt, the most famous site of the city. It was once the seat of government of the powerful Berber tribe of Glaoui and served as the palace of Pasha Thami El Glaoui, who ruled the entire region southeast of Marrakech. On the road to the Thousand Kasbahs, we go to Skoura. In the middle of this large palm oasis, countless old kasbahs stand. Visit of the Amridil Kasbah, today transformed into a museum. The road then leads to El Kelaat M'Gouna, the main town of the valley of roses. Possible stop at a producer of cosmetic products made from Damascus roses (Rosa Damascena) which bloom in May and are grown abundantly in the region. Continuation along the chain of the High Atlas and at Boumalne du Dades detour to the Dades Gorges to the rocks called "Fingers of monkey", surprising rock forms. Arrival in Tinghir in the early evening,
Located between the High Atlas and the Jebel Saghro, the charming town of Tinghir, which has kept its authenticity with its palm groves stretching for miles, invites you to stay a little longer. Visit the world-famous Todra Gorge with its rock walls up to 300 meters high. After a short walk through gardens of palm and olive trees, visit the old small mosque and Koranic school of Ikelane, dating from the last century and currently being renovated. Take a walk in the old Ksar, now partly very nicely restored, or go for a walk in the center of the city with the women's alley. If you are in Tinghir on a Monday, the weekly market day, a morning visit to this typical rural souk is a very special experience.
A nomadic proverb says: "You can't describe the desert, you have to experience it." Desert is the order of the day tonight! On the way to Erfoud and Rissani, you will visit Ksar El Khorbat with its local museum, admire the Khettaras, remains of ancient water transport routes and at lunch in Rissani you will have the opportunity to try a local "pizza". Continue to Merzouga. A pure desert experience awaits you: admire the sunset on camelback amidst sand dunes up to 100m high.
Getting up early is worth it! Be amazed by the magnificent sunrise in the Sahara. After breakfast you leave this beautiful place for Rissani, a small typical desert town belonging to the Tafilalet region. The region with its 300,000 date palms is one of the most important in Morocco for the production of dates and center in the trade of fossils. Stop in Rissani at the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, founder of the Alaouite dynasty and ancestor of the current King Mohamed VI. (Visit of the inner courtyard is possible, but the tomb is reserved for Muslims). Then you cross vast arid plains dotted by acacias Raddiana through the oases of Alnif, Tazzarine and N'Kob, the village of 40 kasbahs, until in the valley of Draa. In the alluvial zone of the river, apart from the date palm, almonds, olives, pomegranates and apricots are cultivated. You drive along this green valley to Agdz, which was once an important stopover for caravans coming from Timbuktu and played a significant economic role in the region. Arrival in Ouarzazate in the evening.
Today, you cross the High Atlas chain again by crossing the Tizi-n-Tichka pass at 2260 m of altitude. The road winds between deep valleys and steep peaks and offers a succession of wild landscapes from which you will admire the grandiose panoramas on the valleys and small villages surrounded by their fields of apple and walnut trees.
Early in the morning departure towards Sidi Rahal and Tanant. The road crosses the Haouz plain passing citrus groves and large olive groves, then crosses a beautiful hilly landscape and villages to the waterfalls of Ouzoud. This small village 150 km from Marrakech is known for its waterfalls, which with a height of over 110 m are the largest waterfalls in North Africa. This remarkable natural attraction of the Moroccan Atlas is a famous postcard motif and a site much appreciated by Moroccans. In good weather with the sun behind you, you can see beautiful rainbows in the mist of the falls. Take a walk in this beautiful green landscape where a community of free-roaming Berber macaques live, though sometimes a bit cheeky. If you feel like it, you can take a short boat ride in the valley or a short walk along the river. Many small restaurants offer good tagines for lunch. In the afternoon return to Marrakech.
