Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park was one of the largest slave markets for gathering people to sell into slavery during the infamous trans-Atlantic slave trade. It is especially worth seeing as a prelude to viewing Cape Coast slave castle since you will be following the route taken by the ancestors of many African Americans.
It was the final link in the slavery route from northern Ghana and was known to have been the largest slave market for the merchant supplying slaves on the forts and castles on the coast.
Cape Coast
Cape Coast Castle (Dungeon) is one of about forty "slave castles", or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese "feitoria" or trading post, established in 1555, which they named Cabo Corso. However, in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there. It originally was a centre for the trade in timber and gold. It was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. It was used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This "gate of no return" was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
*Dinner at One Africa
One Africa: "From a first glance you have no idea what awaits you behind those large bamboo gates, adorned with the Lion of Judah on them. But once you enter you become part of the quaint village setting and tranquil beauty of One Africa's Guest House. You come face to face with unique, traditional, African style, and Northern Ghanaian architecture...circular guest houses with thatch roofs, within a private walled compound lush with coconut and almond trees, facing the Gulf of Guinea. We will also tickle your tummies with the "best food you will eat" while in Ghana, so say our many satisfied and happy visitors."
