Your Leaders

MARK FLASHEN  has worked in the field of transformational leadership and development for over 35 years.  He has coached and mentored hundreds of individuals and small business teams. He has also facilitated programs for Landmark Worldwide, a leading personal and professional growth, training and development company.  In December 2021, he went on his first Amazon Journey.  It proved transformative. He has since gone on to partner with Steve Torenten and three other leaders, forming a non-profit organization to work with the elders of Sharamentsa, a remarkable indigenous community, to create a School for Leadership.  This will be his 6th Rainforest Journey.

STEVE TORNETEN Leading transformative journeys in the Amazon has been a profound passion of mine ever since I received a calling years ago to venture into the enchanting magic of the rainforest and connect with our indigenous brothers and sisters who call it home. Cultivating a responsible relationship with indigenous communities grounded in principles of respect and reciprocity has been integral to my journey.

Your Guide

Juan Fernando Duran is an exceptional guide in the South American Amazon, more like a beloved member of the indigenous community. His expertise spans history, and wildlife, from the Galapagos Islands to the Andes mountains and Amazon rainforest. After a gourmet breakfast, our journey begins with a scenic drive southward, descending through the Andes via the picturesque “Avenue of the Volcanoes” and traversing the waterfall-strewn Pastaza River Canyon, eventually arriving at the edge of the Amazon Basin. There, amidst the towering trees and vibrant forest, we will rendezvous with our indigenous guide, organize our provisions then launch our motorized canoe’s.. As we proceed downriver into the Waorani Territory, the jungle comes alive around us, filling the air with its lively symphony. Upon reaching our destination—a rustic hut nestled along the riverbank—we are warmly greeted by our hosts, the Waorani. Over the next three days, we immerse ourselves in the captivating beauty of the Waorani Rainforest. Guided by our Waorani host, we embark on exhilarating excursions to observe a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, parrots, macaws, and other bird species. With luck, we may even catch sight of peccaries, capybaras, tapirs, and the elusive jaguars. During our explorations, we gain insight into the Waorani way of life, learning about their traditional hunting techniques, daily food gathering rituals, and the invaluable uses of medicinal plants found in the jungle. Embrace moments of tranquility as we swim in natural pools beneath cascading waterfalls, and as night falls, embark on nocturnal walks to observe amphibians and nocturnal creatures, offering a glimpse into the enchanting mysteries of the rainforest under the moonlit sky. After each exhilarating day, we return to camp to rest, gather around a crackling fire as our hosts regale us with captivating myths, traditions, and stories of Waorani history, fostering a deeper connection to the land and its people.
