Munich Airport is organized and efficient with lots of local services. Take a 45min train ride to your hotel or partner with another fellow rider and take a cab. This is the capital of the wealthy region of Bavaria, home to BMW, great beer and a fiercely good football team (soccer). If you have the time we encourage you to arrive a day or two early to walk/eat/drink off that jet lag before you ride. Your hotel is near all things motorcycle with plenty of gear shops. There's grocery, pharmacy and some restaurants nearby our hotel but most importantly it's next to a subway station so getting around Munich will be easy and cheap. In the afternoon attend the riders briefing and get your helmet com unit installed. Tonight join your teacher Cat MacLeod for a Döner or walk down to the local Beer Garden.
Today class begins and it's pretty much hands on fun all day. Today it's watching EU traffic, learning how to use the GPS routes and getting a feel for your front brake for the days ahead. Your route will take you south through Bavarian farm country, to a surprise lunch stop that will showcase how EU is different, up a alps pass and down into the city of Bolzano before heading to our hotel deep in the Dolomites. Learn why this location was chosen, check in like a pro and navigate your way to dinner for another delicious lesson in local food and see first hand why a resort area is your friend.
It's time to learn to ride like a local, pass like a local and hunt for the best strudel. Today you hit the "Sella Round" for the first time a collection of the most scenic passes in the Italian Alps. Get your video cameras set right because this is the good stuff. Learn the standards of "top of the pass" services and how to ride Alps hairpins. Break up into small groups and ride your pace but meet everyone at the top. Watch for buses and cyclists as this is one of Europes most popular playgrounds.
There's an array of routes but If you're ready for a challenge it's time to ride Passo Manghen, the riders pass. It's narrow, it's twisty, it's insane and it's fun. Learn the rear brake trick to bringing in your line tight on hairpin exits. At lunch time learn how to fix a flat on the road. Your abilities are starting to pick up and you'll really start enjoying the roads. Remember your front brake rules on downhills. We finish up in Canazei with some interesting dinner options.
It's a bit touristy and it's a long ride but for some people riding Stelvio is a must when they go to the Alps. Get up early and take the main valley road across Italy and have breakfast on top of Stelvio. Then return via Gavia Pass and the Alps town of Bormio. Beware of wet tunnels and the occasional mountain goat. Getting a sausage at Bruno's at the top is a common tradition for local riders. Get some extra stickers to make your friends envious.
We'll head a bit further west on our way back and ride over the Austrian toll road of Timmelsjoch. By now you've learned how to get your alps stickers and sample the goulash. After a run through some Bavarian canyons we'll hit the autobahn on motorcycles and use our learned autobahn etiquette with our throttle hand. Tonight who'd like to finish the tour in the old city center of Munich at a proper beer garden, no not that one it's for tourists, a real one.
Hopefully you can arrange an afternoon flight as you'll probably want to sleep in. More important than all the fun you had is you've learned the lesson that riding in Europe isn't that hard and you can do it yourself.
