About your trip

Hello, literary lovers and travelers! Welcome to the lovely English countryside and its many inspirations held dear by our beloved Jane Austen. I invite you to not only explore where Jane Austen lived and wrote, but to dive into her novels and experience the England she immortalized in her words.

You’ll discover Austen’s very own home in Chawton, visit grand estates she knew well, and tour the iconic town of Bath. We’ll go beyond the usual literary tours to actually experience what Jane Austen wrote, not just learn about it. After morning archery practice, afternoon tea, and a picnic on the grounds of Austen’s family’s estate- you may begin to wonder if you’ve stepped into one of her novels! I invite you to come along and experience the England we can usually only read about, but on this one exclusive trip, we’ll bring it into a reality!

London Arrival - Basingstoke

Welcome to England! After landing at London Heathrow Airport, complete customs and immigration requirements before meeting your host, Laura Clift, and your Tour Director.

Our first adventure begins as we journey through the English countryside to the village of Basingstoke. Jane Austen spent much of her youth here at Hampshire and loved the area dearly.

Arrive at your hotel, Oakley Hall, a grand 18th-century Georgian Manor House, and a Four Silver Star Hotel set in a 315 acre estate surrounded by gorgeous gardens. This hotel is extra special because Jane Austen actually visited the hall during her lifetime!

Check-in, and settle into your room. Enjoy free time before joining your fellow travelers for your Welcome Orientation, followed by dinner at The Glasshouse in Oakley Hall to get to know your fellow “Janeites”.

Jane Austen’s Home

Today, we not only learn about Jane Austen’s life, but experience an activity often practiced in her time- archery! Test out your aim just like Emma in the 90s movie adaptation of the beloved novel. After you’ve hit a bullseye (or at least the target), enjoy a lovely afternoon tea along with an assortment of classic pastries!

Next, take a merry journey to Chawton to visit Jane Austen’s House, which was home to the famous author from 1809 to 1817. End the day at the Greyfriar Pub right across the village road for a tasty local meal and fun experience with your group.

Chawton House

Today, we will take an excursion to the magnificent Chawton House, an Elizabethan manor house that once belonged to Jane Austen's brother, Edward. After a private tour of the house and grounds, we’ll enjoy a delightful picnic lunch in the expansive gardens. Just as Jane Austen’s heroines do, feel free to take a turn about the gardens and explore at your leisure.

Once we’ve had a proper adventure, it’s time to return to Oakley Hall for happy-hour and 2 included alcoholic beverages per person at the hotel’s 1795 Bar & Lounge. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious dinner at the acclaimed hotel restaurant.

Road Trip to Bath

Today we’re taking a road trip to Bath! The same journey Jane would’ve taken when she moved from Chawton to Bath, but we’re taking the scenic route. Our first stop is Winchester Cathedral, dating back to the 7th century and one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. We’ll be able to visit Jane Austen’s tombstone, admire her statue, and enjoy the magnificent cathedral as a whole.

Next, we’ll journey to the Somerset-Wiltshire border to visit the illustrious Stourhead Estate. You may recognize some structures used in the filming of the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice. The iconic Temple of Apollo was the dramatic location for Mr. Darcy’s first, and tragic, proposal to Lizzie. Feel free to recite a few lines and take commemorative photos! The Palladian Bridge is also featured in the film and can’t be missed. The gardens are world-famous and have a total of eight landmarks to search for including a Gothic Cottage, Pantheon, a mysterious Grotto, and more!

Enjoy lunch at the onsite café before we travel on to Bath where you will spend the next two nights. Check into your hotel and settle into your room. The remainder of the evening is free.

Jane Austen Centre

Welcome to the lively and unique city of Bath! Today we visit the Jane Austen Centre, the heart of all things Austen in England. The Centre is housed in a beautiful Georgian building in the center of everything. We’ll embark on a private tour and learn more about the life and work of the lovely Jane Austen.

Next, we’ll enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea together before splitting up. With so much to do in Bath, the rest of the day is free for you to explore individual pursuits! We’ll have a list of suggestions at the ready if you don’t know where to start!

Jane Austen's London

Today we’re off to London! This is your chance to see some of the city’s most iconic landmarks such as Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. You’ll have the whole day free to explore!

To find interests associated with Jane Austen, we suggest visiting the British Library’s Austen exhibits, the National Portrait Gallery to see Cassandra’s portrait of Jane Austen, and Covent Garden to visit the site of Henry Austen’s office.

Going to "town" is truly the best finale for our adventuring through Jane Austen's England!

Return Home

Sadly, our journey has come to its final day. All good things must come to an end but only until our next adventure! After breakfast, you will transfer to the airport to wave goodbye to Austen’s England and your travel buddies. Board your aircraft to fly across the Atlantic Ocean back to the United States!

When you’re safe back at home with a cup of tea and your favorite Austen novel, think on the lovely memories of our trip, and as Jane says: “Think only of the past as its remembrance gives you pleasure.

Laura Clift

Dear Reader,

Thank you for considering this trip! I hope your imagination has already begun to spin spectacular ideas about what it might be like to join us in England. As a lifelong Jane Austen Enthusiast, I’ve designed this trip for anyone who wants to visit where Austen lived- but also wants a little bit more than a regular literary tour.

Not only are we going to tour Hampshire, Bath, and London- but I’ve specifically designed this trip to be as immersive as possible to truly experience Jane Austen’s England. For example, Oakley Hall Hotel was once simply Oakley Hall- a place that Jane Austen visited from time to time. We’re stopping by the Stourhead Gardens where we’ll discover the grand Temple of Apollo, made famous by the 2005 movie adaptation of Pride & Prejudice.

This trip is for the voracious readers, the avid movie watchers, and restless dreamers who wish- for just a moment- to fall through the looking glass into the stories Austen crafted. Our activities go beyond tours of historic sites. We’re walking in the footsteps of her characters, sometimes quite literally, with fun outings like archery practice, outdoor picnics, and visits to iconic Regency destinations.
