Let's explore Kigali, the capital. The city has been declared "best African capital" by the UN. Visiting it will leave you enchanted. From its 1400 meters high, and with its million inhabitants, Kigali has become a model capital: welcoming, safe, but also clean and regulated.
The country is extraordinarily green: the bluish green of the eucalyptus trees, the dark green of the cypress trees bordering the tracks, the tender green of the rice fields at the bottom of the deep valleys. The Huye Museum is a must see for those interested in African history. It houses the finest ethnographic collection in Central Africa. Possible visit of the remarkable arboretum which contains many exotic and native species.
Covering an area of 1,020 km2, this park, at an altitude of between 1,600 m and 2,950 m, enjoys a pleasantly cool climate. With more than 200 different kinds of trees and more than 100 kinds of orchids, it is a unique habitat for 13 species of primates including the baboon, the Hoestian cercopithecus and the gray-cheeked mangabey. A network of well-maintained forest trails leads to various waterfalls and a large, high-altitude marsh, unique biotope. On foot under the thick tropical canopy, we will discover colobus and chimpanzees feeding on wild figs.
Vast tea plantations ripple through the hills. Lake Kivu located at an altitude of 1,460 m is magnificent by the beauty of its banks and the lush vegetation that surrounds it. A good track runs along the lake, at times climbs up to over 2,000 m and offers us grandiose views of the hundreds of islands standing out against the shimmering surface. We'll cross the many surrounding villages.
After a few relaxed morning hours enjoying the clear and pure water of the lake, discovering the beauty of the small bay and the neighboring islands, we set off towards our next stop.
It's the first light of dawn and we are in the Volcanoes National Park in search of mountain gorillas. Vegetarians, loving humid forests, families of 8 to 20 individuals include a dominant male, adult females and several adolescents. The silverback male can reach a weight of 250 kg and a height of 1.70 m. Good-natured and peaceful, anthropoids observe us while feeding in their plant world. Intense and unique moment.
The mountain Bisoke adventure is one of the most memorable activities in Rwanda. The top of this Volcano has a spectacular crater lake. It is simply a 6 – hours hike including the 2 hours descending down to the starting point. Experienced hikers can get to the top of this mountain in a matter of 3 hours or even less and return to the base in about an hour.
Departure for Kigali and transfer to the airport in the evening.
