Weather Considerations:

  • Spain: Expect very hot temperatures in cities like Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona in August (35°C/95°F or higher). Light, breathable clothing is essential. For evenings, a light jacket or sweater may be necessary, especially near the coast or in the mountains.

  • Canary Islands: The islands tend to be warmer year-round but more temperate, especially in coastal areas. Coastal breezes can cool things down slightly at night. Consider layers, such as a light jacket or sweater, for evening outings.

Health & Safety Items:

  • Face masks (if needed)

  • Travel-size disinfectant wipes (to sanitize surfaces)

  • Prescription medications (bring enough for the entire trip with a copy of your doctor’s prescription)

Packing Tips:

  • Pack light: Especially for flights within Spain or between the islands, as budget airlines have strict baggage limits. Stick to one suitcase (max 45lbs) and a small carry-on or day pack.

  • Travel laundry: If you plan to do laundry, pack detergent sheets or pods for convenience.

  • Avoid overpacking: With Spain's warm weather, you won’t need heavy layers or cold-weather gear. Stick to versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched for different activities.

By packing strategically, you’ll be well-equipped for your 13-day adventure through Spain and the Canary Islands. Enjoy your trip!

Europe Travel Tips

Money:

  • Take out Euros from an ATM. Conversion rates are about equal to the dollar.

  • Be mindful that some ATMs charge a high conversion rate, like 11-15%. Avoid these ATMs, as well as EuroNet ATMs, which tend to have high conversion fees.

  • Use the XE currency conversion app to show you the conversion rate when making purchases.

  • Don't pay in USD. Merchants will likely not accept it, or if they do, the conversion rate won't be favorable.

  • If a merchant asks if you want to process your card in USD or Euro, always choose Euros (local currency).

  • Cash is widely used, especially for small purchases. Keep small bills and coins for things like drinks or bathroom fees.

  • When tipping, rounding up is acceptable. You don't need to tip 20% as standard.

  • Be sure to use up any leftover coins before leaving Europe, as they cannot be exchanged back.

  • Tip: You can order euros from your bank before you depart to avoid ATM fees during your journey.

Financial Safety:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash.

  • Split up your cash, cards, and important documents into different places (wallet, money belt, and luggage).

  • Always keep your wallet or purse close to your body, and never leave it unattended.

  • Use ATMs in secure, well-lit areas and avoid those with suspicious-looking devices attached to them.

  • Regularly check your credit card and bank statements for unauthorized transactions.

  • Use credit cards for larger purchases, as they offer better protection than debit cards.

  • Consider using a travel credit card that offers benefits such as no foreign transaction fees and travel insurance.

  • Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to prevent them from flagging your purchases as suspicious.

  • Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi. Use a VPN to protect your data and avoid accessing sensitive information on unsecured networks.

Personal Safety:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

  • Avoid carrying valuables or expensive jewelry.

  • Use a money belt or cross-body purse to keep essential items secure.

  • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unlit areas.

  • Keep your wallet in a front pocket or money belt.

  • Choose a cross-body purse with a secure zipper or buckle.

  • Be cautious if strangers approach you, particularly in tourist areas.

  • Stay vigilant in crowded places like train stations and tourist attractions.

  • Consider registering with your embassy or consulate in case of emergency.

  • Keep emergency contact information with you and learn basic local phrases for help.

Transportation:

  • Make sure to validate your ticket before boarding public transportation.

  • For taxis, use trusted ride-sharing apps or licensed taxis.

  • Always use official transportation services at airports and train stations.

10:00 AM: Meet in the hotel lobby to begin the first of two engaging walking tours through Bilbao.

This morning’s guided experience introduces you to the historic and architectural treasures of Bilbao. Together with our expert local guide, we’ll walk through the Old Town (Casco Viejo)—the city’s beating heart for centuries. You’ll discover the “Seven Streets,” the Churches of San Antón and Santiago, and the bustling La Ribera Market. Then, continue into Bilbao’s 19th-century expansion era, witnessing how industrialization and banking transformed the city, before finishing with its striking modern revitalization along the riverbank promenades.

Thursday, August 21, 2025

Begin your day at your own pace with a delicious breakfast at Hotel Ercilla de Bilbao. Enjoy a generous breakfast buffet served daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM, or opt for à la carte options available from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bar Americano, located in the lobby. Breakfast is included each day—just charge it to your room. Savor the fresh, flavorful offerings and take your time as you ease into a day of discovery and adventure.

9:00 AM: Depart from the hotel by private van for an immersive full-day excursion exploring the countryside, coast, and city highlights of the Basque region.

Our journey begins with a scenic drive along the winding back roads of the Basque coast, offering spectacular views of the sea, cliffs, and charming villages. Along the way, we'll stop frequently to take in the landscape and breathe the fresh ocean air.

Our first stop is Gernika (Guernica)—a town steeped in history and immortalized by Picasso's famous painting. You'll learn about the 1937 bombing during the Spanish Civil War and visit the legendary Gernika Tree, under which generations of leaders made just decisions, as praised by philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Next, we visit Urdaibai, a stunning UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where rivers, mountains, wetlands, and sea come together in ever-changing harmony. Depending on the tide, the landscape may vary dramatically, creating a dynamic habitat for birdlife.

From there, we continue to Mundaka, a picturesque coastal town and world-famous surfing destination, known for having one of the most perfect left-hand waves on the planet.

Then it's on to the dramatic viewpoint of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a legendary islet connected to the mainland by a 241-step stone bridge. Made famous by Game of Thrones as "Dragonstone," the breathtaking cliffs and crashing waves are all very real.

After a morning full of discovery, enjoy lunch on your own at one of the coastal towns or en route to Bilbao.

In the afternoon, we return to the city to explore the Guggenheim Museum, one of the most iconic landmarks in contemporary architecture. Opened in 1997, the museum is credited with transforming Bilbao into a world-class cultural destination. Admire major works of modern and contemporary art, and be welcomed by the beloved "Puppy" sculpture, a massive floral dog guarding the entrance.
