Japan Travel Tips for October

1. Pack Layers

Temperatures vary between day and evening. Bring layers that are easy to add or remove.

2. Bring Some Cash

Credit cards are widely accepted, but many temples, markets, and small vendors prefer cash.
Starting amount: 20,000–40,000 yen.

3. Trains Run Exactly on Time

Arrive early, line up where marked, and be ready to board quickly. Eating is usually allowed only on long-distance trains.

4. Etiquette Matters

  • Speaking on the phone in public transit is discouraged

  • Avoid walking while eating, except in markets

  • Remove shoes when requested

  • Bow slightly when greeting or thanking

5. Consider Packing Light

Japan’s train stations may include stairs and crowded platforms. Luggage forwarding (“takkyubin”) is a convenient option for moving bags between cities.

6. Reliable Connectivity

Bring a portable Wi-Fi device or purchase a local SIM card for navigation and translation tools.

7. Expect Some Crowds

Late October begins the autumn foliage season. Starting sightseeing earlier in the day helps avoid crowds.

8. Convenience Stores Are Excellent

7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart offer affordable meals, drinks, ATMs, snacks, and travel necessities. They are clean, fast, and reliable.

9. Wear Easy On/Off Shoes

Many traditional buildings require shoe removal. Slip-on shoes are the most convenient option.

10. Photography Restrictions

Some shrines, tea houses, performances, and Geisha districts have photography restrictions. Look for signs and follow staff instructions.

Helpful Tips

Helpful Tips for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Japan

Packing Essentials

  • Pack light on toiletries; you can purchase more upon arrival.
  • Japan offers excellent skincare products.
  • Leave space in your suitcase for souvenirs.
  • Store toiletries in a Ziploc bag to prevent spills.
  • Bring at least two bank cards (Visa and Mastercard) in case of loss or ATM issues.
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport; keep one at home and another in your luggage.
  • Download useful apps: Google Translate for reading Japanese and an offline maps app like Google Maps.

Connectivity

  • Rent a Pocket Wi-Fi: Free public Wi-Fi is limited, so a pocket Wi-Fi device is highly recommended. You can pick it up at the airport or have it delivered to your hotel.
  • Alternatively, rent a Japanese SIM card if your phone is unlocked.

Useful Apps

  • Google Translate: Helpful for communication and translating signs.
  • Japanese-English Dictionary Apps: Options like Imiwa? or Japanese can be useful.
  • Hyperdia: Great for checking train routes and schedules.
  • Google Maps: Essential for navigating streets, as many do not have clear signage.

Cultural Etiquette & Daily Life

  • Trash cans are rare, so be prepared to carry your trash with you.
  • Convenience stores like Lawson and 7-Eleven offer high-quality, unique snacks.
  • Taxi Doors: They open and close automatically, so don’t try to open or shut them yourself.

Money & Tipping

  • Use the Money Tray: Instead of handing money directly to cashiers, place it in the tray provided.
  • Tipping is not customary. Instead, express gratitude with a smile and say, "Gochisousama deshita" (thank you for the meal).

Dining Etiquette

  • Never point or wave chopsticks at others, stab food, or pass food from chopsticks to chopsticks.
  • Avoid sticking chopsticks upright in a rice bowl, as this resembles a funeral ritual.
  • Use the opposite end of chopsticks to serve yourself from shared dishes.
  • If you have dietary restrictions, clearly specify what you can and cannot eat.

Public Behavior & Transport

  • Always queue in an orderly manner and never cut in line.
  • Punctuality is highly valued—be on time for reservations and transportation.
  • Remove your shoes before entering homes, ryokans, traditional restaurants, and temples.
  • Some places provide indoor slippers, and specific bathroom slippers should only be used inside restrooms.
  • Public Transport Rules:
    • Avoid talking on your phone while on trains and buses.
    • Train conductors bow as a sign of respect—observe and appreciate local customs.

Bathrooms & Tattoos

  • Toilet Features: Many toilets have bidet functions, dryers, and automatic lids. Icons are usually self-explanatory, but you may want to familiarize yourself with the controls.
  • Tattoos: Some public baths, pools, and gyms prohibit tattoos due to historical associations with organized crime. Cover them with clothing or use tattoo-friendly facilities.

Greetings & Social Interactions

  • Bowing is the standard greeting—deep bows indicate more respect. A simple nod is appreciated if unsure.
  • Hugging and cheek-kissing are not common.

By keeping these tips in mind, your trip to Japan will be smoother and more enjoyable. Safe travels!
