Travel Tips for Visiting Holland During the Tulip Season in April
Visiting Holland in April to experience the stunning tulips is a truly unforgettable experience, but to make the most of your trip, it's important to be prepared. Here are some travel tips to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable time:
Expect Large Crowds at Keukenhof Gardens
Keukenhof Gardens, the largest flower garden in the world, is the highlight of the tulip season. While it’s a must-visit destination, it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends. To avoid the busiest times:
Take a Bike Ride Through the Tulip Fields
One of the best ways to explore the tulip fields is by bike, as the flat terrain makes it easy and enjoyable. Renting a bike for a leisurely ride through the fields will allow you to experience the beauty of the flowers up close and capture stunning photos without the distractions of a busier tour. Many towns, like Lisse and Noord-Holland, offer bike rentals and routes that pass by the tulip fields.
Visit Smaller, Lesser-Known Tulip Fields
While Keukenhof Gardens is spectacular, the tulip fields in Noord-Holland, Friesland, and around Alkmaar offer a more peaceful experience with fewer tourists. If you’re looking for a quieter, more intimate experience, venture beyond the main tourist hubs to these off-the-beaten-path locations.
Explore Dutch Villages for an Authentic Experience
Holland’s tulip fields are often surrounded by quaint villages that are worth exploring. Marken, Zaanse Schans, and Edam are picturesque towns with traditional wooden houses, charming canals, and rich history. A visit to these villages will give you a taste of Dutch life outside of the bustling cities.
Understand Tulip Varieties and Their Blooming Periods
Not all tulips bloom at the same time. The first tulips start blooming in late March, but the best time to visit for peak blooms is typically mid-April to early May. Be sure to check the bloom forecasts and plan your visit around the optimal bloom times for the best flower displays.
Try Local Dutch Delicacies
No trip to the Netherlands is complete without sampling some of the country’s culinary delights. Be sure to try:
Be Respectful of the Tulip Fields
While it’s tempting to get close to the flowers for that perfect shot, be mindful not to walk on or damage the tulip fields. Stick to the designated walking paths and avoid stepping on the flowers to preserve their beauty for everyone to enjoy.
Photography Tips
Holland’s tulips provide endless photo opportunities, but to get the best shots:
Stay Hydrated and Rested
April weather can vary, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, especially if you’re biking or walking a lot. Also, take time to rest and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the gardens and fields, so you don’t burn out during your trip.
If you cancel your trip before the 90-day deadline, 25% of the total trip price is non-refundable, as are any airfare, train tickets, or ferry tickets purchased as part of your trip package due to the strict cancellation policy by foreign carriers (if applicable).
Trip cancellations requested after the final payment deadlines listed above are non-refundable, and guests are encouraged to file a claim with their travel insurance for reimbursement.
In the unlikely event Walker Wellness Retreats cancels the retreat, guests will be provided a full 100% refund of their booking.
Lastly, we partner with several third-party booking platforms that have separate deposit and cancellation policies. If you book through a third-party partner, please refer to their specific cancellation policies.
