The BEYOND DJ training is an 8-week online course intentionally designed for beginners and aspiring Ecstatic Dance DJs.

Led by world-renowned Ecstatic DJ’s, facilitators and community leaders, this journey will equip you with everything that you’ll need to be ready to DJ a transformational dance experience with confidence, intuition and skill. 

From the the essentials of DJ mixing, to the art of finding your unique sound, to learning cues on how to read and respond to a vibrant dance floor, this will be more than your average DJ course; it will be a  journey into the heart of what it takes to create transformative dance experiences.

Aspiring DJs: If you’ve dreamt of guiding an Ecstatic Dance as a DJ and want to make that dream come true.

*No prior experience is necessary. Our course is designed for everyone, providing step-by-step guidance to help you confidently play a live Ecstatic Dance set by the end of the course.

Myk Tummolo

Myk is a DJ, musician and maker of magick based in NYC. 

He is the co-founder of legendary global bass collective Cumba Mela, founder of JunXion NYC and producer of Ecstatic Dance NYC, fine purveyor of global bass, transnational grooves and magical happenings.

DRĖĖĖMY

DRĖĖĖMY is an Indigenous Egyptian DJ, music producer, vocalist, poet, multi-instrumentalist, sound designer, curator, and activist. Their music is described as organic electronica, which combines ancient sounds with futuristic technologies. Their work is inspired by the medicinal power of sound and movement, and is designed to create interactive spaces for personal revelation and collective celebration. Some say their sound is ethereal and transcendent, and that they have a diverse production and performance skillset.

Omar Aena

Omar Aena is a DJ, community organizer and cultural storyteller based in New York City. He is the founder of Dance Beyond, a community that hosts Ecstatic Dance festivals and retreats, and LILA, a project that includes documentary films, spiritual tours, and gatherings focused on preserving and celebrating traditional ecstatic music and dance cultures from around the world.

As a DJ, he is known for his unique ability to bridge traditional songs of the past with electronic sounds of the present, with a particular focus on music from his Middle Eastern roots. He has played at Ecstatic Dances, festivals and local events all around the world including Judson Church, NuBlu NYC, Unifier Festival and more.

FlavYa

Flavya is an independent Brazilian-American DJ and producer seamlessly blending the sounds of Brazil and beyond. Her eclectic style has a special focus on Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Latin rhythms. Raised between New York City and São Paulo, she effortlessly connects the brasilidades, global grooves, and is active in the Brazilian and World dance music scenes in NYC playing at forró nights at Nublu, Baile Joia brasilidades party, and conscious dance events Dance Beyond as well as other Ecstatic Dances in the region. 

Joro Boro

Joro-Boro is a Bulgarian-American DJ and producer who's been playing for a quarter of a century. His signature high-drama style of mixing weaves a wide variety of music from different eras, cultures, and genres. He regularly plays at Ecstatic Dance and similar conscious dance events. He has taught production and DJ classes in various settings.

Keena Maya

The depths of Keena Maya's sound are incantations, drawing us down into our roots, grounding us into our bodies, and invoking the incandescent deity within us to rise. Her work lies at the intersection of somatic embodiment, holistic experience design, herbal craft, mutual care, ceremony, and dance.  She passionately creates intentional, ritualistic dance & meditation experiences. Embodiment over substances to awaken deep states of being and connecting with ourselves, each other, and the beyond human world.  She is half of the live ritual bass project  b e i n g - s o u n d, a resident DJ of Ecstatic Dance NYC, and a pillar of the feminine-powered Collective BAE. Keena Maya is, so that we may become.

Weeks 1 & 2 

WHY DJ?

• Dive into the core of your motivation for becoming a DJ. Connect deeply with your personal roots, ancestry, and life story to uncover what you want your unique sound to be. This week focuses on identifying what sets you apart and what drives your passion for DJing, helping you align your musical expression with your personal journey.

INTRO TO EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE

• Gain proficiency with DJ software and hardware. Learn the basics of popular DJ programs like Serato, Traktor, and Rekordbox, and get hands-on with controllers and mixers.

Weeks 3 & 4

BUILDING A LIBRARY

• This week focuses on selecting and curating music for an Ecstatic Dance set. You’ll explore common genres played during Ecstatic Dances and learn best practices on how to build a diverse and dynamic music library. Activities for this week include creating a playlist of tracks suited for Ecstatic Dance, listening to existing mixes to understand effective track choices and flow, and engaging in group discussions about music selection strategies.

SONG ARCHITECTURE

• Understand the building blocks of electronic music by studying the song’s structure and how beatmatching, mixing, and creating effective drops. This week focuses on how songs are typically arranged and how to manipulate these elements to craft seamless transitions and dynamic sets. Complete exercises focused on beatmatching and transitioning between tracks. Record a short mix and receive feedback.

Weeks 5 & 6

CRAFTING A JOURNEY

• Learn how to create a cohesive musical flow and build an engaging sonic journey. This week teaches you the art of curating a set that evolves naturally, guiding your audience through different emotional and energetic states to create a transformative dance experience.

LIVE ELEMENTS

• Refine your skills for live performances, including techniques for engaging with dancers and enhancing the communal experience. This week emphasizes stage presence, interaction with the crowd, and adapting your set in real-time to meet the energy of the dance floor.

Weeks 7 & 8

BRANDING AND PROMOTION

• Develop your personal DJ brand and learn effective strategies for promotion. This week covers how to establish your unique identity in the Ecstatic Dance DJ world, create compelling promotional materials, and build a presence that attracts and retains your audience.

FINAL PROJECT AND LAUNCHING!

• Integrate everything you’ve learned into a final mix that showcases your skills and insights.
