Explore The Western Canary Islands with us by Sail! Ocean Adventure, Skills, and Acceleration of the Ocean Nomads lifestyle. Fueled By Fellow Ocean Nomads, Nature, and Bananas.

A hands-on, ocean and island exploration mentorSHIP shaped by shared life at sea, training ocean skills, and conscious adventuring.

Ocean Nomads expeditions navigate between sailing, outdoor adventure, and intentional living. This is an ocean & island exploration for those who want to sail more consciously, learn by doing, experience ocean sailing conditions, accelerate ocean nomads lifestyle skills, connections, and be part of a crew.

This is real sailing… Moving with the wind between the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Palma. Living at anchor when we can, exploring on foot and sharing the rhythm of life at sea and on land.

Seasoned Ocean Nomads Thomas van Thiel and Jonatan Bjorkman will bring you their hard earned wisdom from a life off sailing, outdoor, expeditioning and nomadic life. Rooted in nature, shaped by the elements, and shared with a small crew of like-minded explorers.

"The real gem of this experience was the human connection, learning to trust, support, and bond with people who started as strangers but became family." Anna (Cape Verde Crew '25)

Why Join?

The start of your next chapter.
It’s a raw, real adventure that builds skills, confidence, expands your worldview, and brings a deep connection to the ocean and fellow ocean lifestyle designers.

Learn by doing, alongside people who live this life
Hands-on offshore sailing with a small crew, guided by experienced skipper and boatowner Thomas and full-time adventurer Jonte. Real conditions, responsibility, and learning. How and with who we sail and travel matters more as where we go.

Build real ocean sailing confidence, miles & skills
Day sails, possible night sailing (if you're all excited, we do it), navigation, sail handling, knots, watches, and seamanship in Atlantic conditions. Ocean sailing can be intense at times. Weather shifts, plans adapt, and this is where we grow.

Sail wild island routes
Moving with the wind between Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Palma (weather decides). Anchoring when we can. Exploring on foot. Explore the raw and rural of the Canary Islands.

A shared healthy & eco vibe rhythm of life onboard
Days are shaped by wind, weather, and simple routines. We share meals, cook vegetarian food together, bake bread, make yoghurt, and care for the boat as a living space. The environment onboard is smoke-free, alcohol-free, calm, and intentionally held.

Ocean Nomads Lifestyle Learnings
Learning flows naturally through shared moments. From citizen science such as marine wildlife observation (great chance to see pilot whales and/or dolphins), to exchanging skills on nomadic living: liveaboard living, vanlife, thru-hiking, freediving, simple food preparation, and everyday seamanship. This isn’t scheduled coaching. It’s lived experience, shared openly.

Be part of a conscious crew
Shared watches, meals, decisions, and conversations create strong bonds with ocean-minded people who care about nature, simplicity, and how they show up.

Open doors for what comes next
Many of our crew go on to longer passages, expeditions, boat buying, and team-ups within the Ocean Nomads network. For many, this journey becomes a turning point. For others, it simply plants a seed. For sure, it broadens your horizon.

Sail with purpose
Low-impact travel, citizen science, and support for Ocean Nomads impact projects are woven into how we sail. We hold a space where learning, care, and adventure can coexist.

"You come to learn sailing, but you leave with something much bigger, lessons in resilience, adaptability, and self-discovery." - Said (Cape Verde Crew '25)

Your Trip Leaders

We're proud and excited to have these ocean nomad legends run our next trip! Decades of lived adventure, expedition and outdoor lifestyle experience.

Thomas Van Thiel

After years of preparation, this year Thomas sets sail with his own expedition vessel to the Artic (starting off a very special Atlantic ocean impact expedition supporting a kitesurf mission across the Atlantic)! Our Canary Islands trip may be the last opportunity to sail with this legend liveaboard, instructor, NGO founder and offshore sailing enthusiast. He's the best to learn all about liveaboard life and buying ocean worthy boats.

With more than 50,000 nautical miles of offshore sailing experience, he has developed extensive knowledge in long-distance navigation, seamanship, offshore training, and boat preparation

A born and raised sailor, ocean activist, and passionate educator, Thomas brings a wealth of experience, energy, and dedication to every ON trip.

Jonatan Bjorkman

Jonatan is an experienced outdoor adventurer and storyteller with over 10,000+ km. of long-distance hiking across islands and countries, like the PCT, Appalachian Trail and many more trails in the world, including the Canary Islands, and + 500 wildcamp nights.

He lives full-time in a van, kite and ski instructor, freedive fanatic and is training for his yachtmaster.

If he's not wild camping or sailing, he lives in his self-built van and nomad beach home.

Jonatan is known for creating a communal hands-on vibe, sharing practical skills such as bread baking, outdoor living, resourcefulness and wild skills in nature.

You’ll find him guiding, sharing (hilarious) adventure stories, and making sure you'll try something new and get ideas for a life lived differently.

Ocean Nomads

With Ocean Nomads we organized over 25 sailing expeditions. We sail slow, consciously, and collaboratively. Everyone onboard plays a role.

The Ocean Nomads Crew mix

It’s the people who make the adventure. We curate a diverse, multi-skilled crew with a similar mindset to create a powerful team mix. It makes ALL the difference. That's why we ask to fill out the application form before booking. This is a community of adventurers, explorers, natural lifestyle designers, and impact-driven ocean lovers.

For this trip we are currently 6 different nationalities

We live beyond the status quo or desire to do so. We care for the planet. Minimize, simplify and cut down on our environmental footprint where we can. We lift each other up and support each other when in need. Some of us are new to sailing, some of us are boatowners and join to share the fun together.

The trip is designed for all adventurers and sailors who are eager to learn and build confidence and/or experience life on a sailboat, and want a real adventure with real adventure people. It’s an opportunity to go beyond sheltered waters, embrace offshore sailing in the hands of a supportive, calm and experienced team and develop the skills and mindset needed for an ocean adventure lifestyle.

Ocean Nomads trips focus on hands-on learning, experience, and adventure over formal certifications.

What to expect?

This is more than just a sailing trip. it’s a fully immersive ocean sailing experience designed to help you make the dream ocean lifestyle a reality, not just while you're with us, but for the long haul.

We sail by the Ocean Nomads values of community, exploration, and positive impact. This is a hands-on journey, where you’re actively involved in every aspect of life at sea. We sail together, provision and cook together, navigate challenges together, and celebrate the magic of the ocean and canary islands together.

You’ll build your confidence, seamanship, community, and self-sufficiency through:
Offshore sailing* & watches Experience real ocean sailing. We're in the Atlantic!
Seamanship & navigation skills Chart courses, trim sails, and handle the elements with confidence.
Crew Life & leadership Learn teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving at sea. Food is part of crew life. We provision together, cook together, and share costs transparently, budget and healthy style.
Eco-conscious adventure & impact Live sustainably, reduce waste, and leave every place cleaner than we found it.

Multi-Adventure This is a multi-adventure trip involving sailing, hiking, diving below the surface, and exploring the places we arrive to by sail. Each day we touch land, unless the conditions really not allow it. This is not an offshore skill drill. But you've got to be prepared to get wet and salty.
Spontaneity & adaptability  This is not a pre-packaged itinerary, each day unfolds based on the wind, weather, and crew dynamics.

  • Offshore sailing is the practice of navigating a sailing vessel typically more than 20–50 nautical miles from land, where weather, waves, and self-sufficiency become primary factors.

Onboard culture & values

Ocean Nomads is a tribe of young at heart, adventurous ocean lovers who seek an active, outdoor lifestyle. We live and sail with an explorer’s mindset, fueled by curiosity and a deep respect for nature. Throughout the journey, we share ideas, experiences, and projects around mindful, self-sufficient, and positive-impact ways to live and travel sustainably at sea, no matter your age, background, or budget. A space where lived experience is valued as much as formal knowledge.

This is an action-packed adventure where everyone plays a role in creating the vibe and shaping an unforgettable experience. From sailing and cooking to sharing stories and skills, the magic of this journey comes from the crew itself.

With sailing, things rarely go as planned, and that’s the beauty of it. This isn’t a pre-packaged itinerary, but a real offshore adventure where we adapt to the wind, weather, and crew decisions. Each day brings a new challenge, a new skill to master, and a new chance to embrace the raw power of the ocean.

To keep our energy high and our connection with nature deep, life onboard is smoke- and alcohol-free, and meals are vegetarian. This supports focus, well-being, and a calm onboard environment, helping everyone stay present, energized, and in tune with the elements. It’s a simple choice that shapes the rhythm and quality of life at sea.

Curious What It’s Like?

Watch our film: Sailing in Greece A Film on Adventure, Impact & Community. This 50-minute documentary captures the essence of Ocean Nomads and the Ocean Nomads lifestyle, what it means to sail with purpose, adventure with impact, and build a community at sea.

Route & Destination: West Canary Islands

Sailing the Wild Blue of the Western Canary Islands

The Canary Islands provide a great environment for building offshore sailing expertise and outdoor exploration, andscapes. This region is an ideal playground for mastering seamanship, navigation in a challenging yet supportive and last but not least, beautiful setting.

We aim to create a route in the western islands between Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma, based on current weather conditions, crew skill levels, and preferences. La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma are just a little wilder than the busier islands in the East. Wild is what we're after! We decide together with the weather.

What makes the Canary Islands perfect for sailing and adventure?

Trade Winds provide reliable northeast winds, creating consistent and dynamic conditions for extensive sail-handling practice.

Wow factor Landscapes offer a stunning backdrop of volcanic peaks, rugged coastlines, and crystal-clear waters. With some luck, we may even encounter whales and dolphins along the way.

Mild Temperatures range from daytime highs of 20-25°C (68-77°F) with cooler nights, perfect for long sailing days and comfortable evenings at anchor.

Consistent Trade Winds of 10-20 knots provide excellent conditions for sail trimming, navigation, and downwind sailing practice.

Low Rainfall keeps conditions generally dry, with occasional light showers and plenty of sunny days at sea.

Atlantic Swells create an exciting learning environment, providing the perfect balance of challenge and comfort.

This region offers a challenging yet rewarding offshore training ground at times, easily accessible from many destinations in Europe and beyond.

A Flexible Weather & Crew-Driven Route

Rather than following a fixed itinerary, together, we will shape the journey. Route planning is part of the skill-building process, learning to assess weather patterns, chart a course, and make informed navigational decisions.

Vessel

We work with a local Canary Island charter company with which we have had a positive experience before. We will choose a 43-foot monohull sailing yacht designed for performance, comfort, and safety. Perfect for sailing in the conditions of the canaries

  • Spacious : 4 double cabins and 2 bathrooms, accommodating up to 8 participants comfortably.

  • Battened Mainsail : so we all get to practice reefing.

  • Modern Equipment: Full batten mainsail and furling genoa for responsive handling, plus advanced navigation systems.

  • Comfortable Amenities: Ample living space, a well-equipped galley, and cozy sleeping quarters to ensure comfort on longer passages.

You share a cabin (and double bed) with a fellow Ocean Nomad on this trip.

What will you learn?

We’ll navigate the Canary Islands together, immersing ourselves in the skills, mindset, and adaptability needed all types of sailing and adventuring while living the Ocean Nomads lifestyle.

We'll teach, share and practice about:

Offshore Navigation
Trust yourself to navigate the open ocean, with the weather, and build confidence in decision-making at sea. It's likely we also include night sailing.

The Sailing Lifestyle
Feel the freedom of slow travel, remote anchorages, and waking up to endless horizons. And what boatlife is really like.

Ocean Nomads Workshopping

Breadbaking, citizen science, liveaboard life, freediving and long-distance hiking and living nomadically. We create moments to share our knowledge and experience on these topics.

Weather Awareness
Learn to interpret the elements, read the winds, and sail in harmony with nature instead of fighting against it.

Sail Handling
Take control of the sails, harness the power of the wind, and adapt to both calm and heavy-weather conditions.

Eco-Minded Cruising
Learn to sail with purpose, minimizing impact and leaving the ocean better than we found it.

Watch Systems & Offshore Preparation
Experience a taste of the rhythm of offshore sailing, from night watches under the stars to long-haul passage routines.

Emergency Preparedness
Gain the mindset and skills to stay calm and take action in high-pressure situations.

Crew Coordination & Leadership
Step into teamwork, communication, and leadership roles. Feel what it's like to navigate challenges together.

Island Exploration and adventures

Learn about the Islands. Balance the intensity of sailing with grounding time on land. We'll also have fulltime explorer Jonatan on board with endless tips and story telling on long distance hiking, wild camping, and life as a fulltime adventurer.

+ Personalized Training
Get one-on-one coaching to refine the skills that matter most to you.

Many people leave this journey with a clearer sense of what kind of sailing and life they want next, and with the confidence, plan and community to take that next step.

"You go in with expectations that you want to learn this and that… but I have to honestly say that I learned way more things that had nothing to do with sailing." – Said (Cape Verde Crew '25)

"I feel MUCH more confident when it comes to sail trimming, reefing and generally knowing your way around on a sailing yacht. But also steering was a very big component of the trip and I gained a lot more confidence in this as well. What I liked and appreciate most was the friendly and open minded atmosphere that was co-created by both the captain and the crew alltogether. Living on a boat under constant movement and sharing a very limited space is definitely a big challenge that was managed super well by everyone. There was a lot of respect, kindness and joy. My advice: Just do it, the eventual outcome after the trip is worth much more than any amount of money could ever buy <3" - Simon (Cape Verde Trip Alumni)

"I have been a member of Ocean Nomads for over five years. The community has been incredible over that time—very supportive and helpful. I’ve gone from working as an environmental awareness yacht skipper to a sailing school instructor, running trips with Ocean Nomads members, and now owning my own yacht as part of the fleet."
— Andy, South Africa

"So happy to be part of this..! Without Ocean Nomads, I would never have gotten into sailing or bought my own sailboat. I’m so grateful for everything Ocean Nomads brought me! Thanks so much, Suzanne, and all the incredible ON members who helped me pursue my dream!"
— Nadiem

"We joined the Ocean Nomads meet-up in Greece. More than just an online network, we found a great community in real life, exploring the Greek islands together. Eleven days of inspiration, ocean- and nomad-life-related workshops, hikes, workouts, cooking sessions, and endless laughter. Nomads from all over the world came together—from Australia to Austria, Hawaii to South Africa, Ireland, and beyond. It’s more than just sailing—it’s a network of like-minded people creating a positive impact."
— Maxx & Sigrid

"It’s amazing how many awesome friends you can make and how much just one week on an Ocean Nomads trip can change your life."
— Marcin, Poland

"The most unforgettable week. The trip preparation and crew turned what would have already been an adventure into something truly special. I’ve now taken part in two Ocean Nomads trips. To say it was life-changing sounds dramatic, but it really was. Sharing time and experiences with people from different backgrounds but a similar mindset was incredible. I hope to create and contribute to similar experiences for others as part of the Flotilla crew."
— Ben, Australia

"Ocean Nomads adventures are: 1. A reward for the senses, discovering incredibly beautiful places and breathtaking scenery. 2. An unbeatable way to get introduced to the sailing lifestyle. 3. A window into seeing the world and people from a more conscious perspective. Suzanne is an inspirational person who helps others redefine life projects and use their inner energy for noble purposes. Our oceans need strong, committed people like her to protect our natural resources and leave them intact for future generations."
— Jose, Spain

"A tribe of cool people who LOVE the sea! Ocean Nomads has opened doors into the sailing world in such a safe, conscious, and fun way—beyond what I imagined when I joined almost four years ago."
— Paula

"If you told me this time last year that I would have spent the better part of the last 365 days sailing around the Canary Islands, surfing in Ireland, sleeping in a van alone in England, and writing this from an island in the Adriatic Sea, I would have rolled my eyes at you. But after joining Ocean Nomads on SV Twister a little over a year ago, my life has done a complete 180° (in the best way possible), and I have this network and so many of you to thank for that!"
— Brianna, SV Twister Crew '21

FAQ

We know that joining an sailing adventure comes with questions. Below are the most common concerns potential crew members have. If you don’t find your answer here, feel free to reach out.

I'm not sure about the investment. Thoughts?
With Ocean Nomads, you’re not just paying for a a sailing trip, you’re investing in skills, confidence, and a network that will open doors for your future adventures. You’ll gain the experience, knowledge, and connections that would take months or even years to figure out on your own.  This trip saves you time, money, and mistakes by providing real-world experience in a supportive learning environment.

If you’ve looked into competent crew and other sailing courses, you’ll know that similar expeditions often cost more than double and often don’t offer the same level of hands-on experience, lifestyle elements, and mentorship. We rent an ocean-worthy vessel and hire one of our best captains.

Do I need prior sailing experience?
No, basic sailing experience is always welcome but we are here to support you in your journey and thats what this trip is about, sailing and exploring

What if I’ve never done an ocean sailing before?
Great! This is the opportunity to do it while minimizing risk. This trip is designed for those looking to build confidence and skills in offshore sailing. You’ll receive hands-on guidance and gradually gain experience with night sailing, offshore navigation, and watch systems.

What am I expected to contribute?

This is a shared journey. Life on board works best when everyone takes part.

You’re expected to:

  • Be present and engaged in daily life on the boat

  • Participate in sailing tasks, watches, and onboard routines, guided by the skipper

  • Contribute to cooking, cleaning, and general onboard duties

  • Share in food provisioning costs and meals as a crew

  • Bring curiosity and a willingness to learn by doing

  • Contribute to a respectful, open, and supportive group dynamic

  • Stay flexible and patient when plans shift with weather or conditions

You don’t need to know everything. You do need to show up with care, responsibility, and an open mindset. This trip works best for people who enjoy being part of a crew, not just along for the ride.

How safe is ocean sailing?
Safety is our top priority. The boat is equipped with liferaft, EPIRB, flares, AIS, VHF, Ocean Worthy lifejackets, life lines, and all necessary emergency equipment. Skipper Thomas has 40,000+ nautical miles of experience and will ensure that all crew members are trained in safety procedures.

What are the sleeping arrangements?
The boat has shared cabins and bunks. You’ll be living in close quarters with your fellow crew members, an essential part of learning how to work as a team at sea.

Will I get seasick?
Seasickness can happen... We’ll provide tips on managing it. Being prepared is always important so if you think you may be sick bring medication to help or other natural remedies to ensure you have the best experience.

What about food?
Together we provision the boat with fresh, local, vegetarian ingredients. Everyone takes turns cooking, this is part of the experience. If you have allergies or special dietary needs, let us know in advance. Also part of the offshore training is provisioning so you can make sure, you're happy with what we provision.

Can I bring my phone or laptop?
Yes, but expect limited connectivity. Between the islands we disconnect from daily life and immerse ourselves in the experience. You’ll have time to take photos and videos, but Wi-Fi won’t be available while sailing. We take satellite emergency equipment on board.

What should I bring?
You’ll receive a detailed packing list once confirmed. There's is no need to invest in advanced foul weather gear. Essentials include a headlamp, non-marking shoes, warm layers, and waterproof gear. We recommend packing light and choosing quick-dry clothing.

How do I prepare for this trip?
We recommend completing the Ocean Nomads Crew Course before departure. This self-paced online course provides a reality check on ocean travel, safety insights, and practical preparation tips to help you get the most out of the trip. You’ll learn key skills, what to pack, how to stay safe, and how to step into the Ocean Nomads lifestyle with confidence.

Before departure, we also create a private group on the Ocean Nomads Member Hub, where you can connect with your fellow crew, share preparations, plan meet-ups, and even team up for travel arrangements. This allows you to get to know each other in advance, exchange insights, and start building the team spirit before you step on board.

Can I join if I’m not an Ocean Nomads member?
Yes. However, Ocean Nomads members get priority booking and a discount. Trips often sell out before we promote them publicly. Not a member yet? Join the community to access exclusive benefits.

Where does the trip start and end?
The journey begins and ends in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The exact marina will be confirmed closer to departure and is also dependant on which leg you are joining

How do I get to the departure point?
The Canary Islands are well connected by flights and ferries from Europe and beyond. We’ll provide recommendations for arrival options.

Why is the trip alcohol- and smoke-free?
We aim to keep our energy high, our minds sharp, and our connection to nature deep. This is a trip about learning, adventure, and teamwork, and we want to ensure everyone is fully present for the experience.

What is the sustainability approach on board?
We minimize waste, reduce single-use plastics, and practice conscious provisioning. Wherever we go, we leave the places cleaner than we found them. Beach clean-ups and responsible travel are part of our daily rhythm. The impact we make is in the details.

What makes this trip unique?

Hands-On, Real Offshore Experience
You won’t just learn how to sail, you’ll live it. This is a fully immersive training ground where you’ll actively participate in navigation, offshore sailing, passage planning, and real-world seamanship. No theory-only courses, every skill is applied in dynamic ocean conditions.

Expert Mentorship & Community Connection
Learn from seasoned skipper Thomas, a 40,000+ nautical mile sailor, boat owner, and ocean activist. His experience extends beyond sailing, from boat ownership to sustainable cruising and full-time ocean nomad life. Plus, you’ll be sailing with a handpicked crew of like-minded ocean adventurers, making this an experience that extends far beyond the trip itself.

Raw, Wild, and Purpose-Driven Exploration
Unlike predictable sailing courses, this expedition is shaped by the elements and you, together with the captain and crew. The Canary Islands provide an unparalleled sailling ground, with trade winds, remote anchorages while also having acceleration zones, and diverse sea states, meaning you will learn so much and get to experience many different types of sailing... hopefully. This is sailing, we never know what the weather will be and that's the beauty of it. Every day is about slow, conscious travel, teamwork, and truly living the ocean nomads lifestyle.

Healthy & Eco Vibes

We value fresh air, superpowers and a healthy mind body and soul. Our trips are smoke free and vegetarian. We are not aware about anyone else offering this.

This journey is shaped by years of sailing, crewing, and living at sea, together with an experienced skipper who values safety, learning, and human connection over ticking miles.

A born and raised sailor, ocean activist, and passionate educator, Thomas brings a wealth of experience, energy, and dedication to every offshore passage. Most recently, he successfully led our Canary Islands to Cape Verde Masterclass, where he mentored a crew of Ocean Nomads on a long-distance Atlantic adventure.

Thomas is a graduate of the Enkhuizer Nautical School and holds a Yachtmaster Offshore certification. With more than 40,000 nautical miles of offshore sailing experience, he has developed extensive knowledge in long-distance navigation, seamanship, offshore training, and boat preparation. Ocean nomads adventures are not just a one time thing you join for a week or two and that’s it. These are experiences that change the way you approach life, nature and the ocean. We believe our trips are just the beginning for plotting the next course in your life. By jumping on board this, you also join our expanding global network of impact-driven travellers, ocean entrepreneurs, sailors, (free)divers, surfers, and active salty souls passionate about the ocean and eager to do good.

On our community HUB we continue the conversation, action, team-ups and meet-ups beyond our events and expeditions to maximize the impact, fun, and ripple effects for ocean adventure and action. We got your back before and after the trip and make the personal connections and introductions to accelerate your dreams.

We used to have an image in our head that sailing is only for rich people, that it’s about showing off boats and boat toys, and that as crew you’re just meant to scrub the deck. Not true. Sailors are free spirits and ocean-minded people. Most of us share the same dream to live a simple life on a sailboat, set off to explore the world, and live life on their own terms. We unite and exchanges ideas to make this dream happen! We  connect with fellow nomads that are on the same mission. Who knows who you may meet during these adventures and what opportunities may come from it?

Skills

Skillbuilding

Learning by doing, that’s what we strive for. Here are some of the skills you develop on our trips:

SAILING | You’ll learn hands-on everything to become a competent crew member. By the end of the journey, you can sail the ship. Our skippers and often also fellow crew members are happy to share and show what to know.

SEAMANSHIP | A Huge part of happy, safe and meaningful ocean nomadic living depends on your seamanship skills.  You can have the biggest bank account but once you’re at sea nothing can be googled or bought. And no person can be hired to fix something. You have to be inventive as situations arise and you’ll learn from experiences along the way. You learn about the wind, the weather, geography, stars, navigation, sea life, boats, yourself, people, and much more.

CONSCIOUS LIVING | Experience resourcefulness. And how you can implement it all into your life. As sailors, we are intricately connected to the ocean on a daily basis. Experiencing sea time daily provides a deep and lasting respect for nature. You’re dependent on it. You experience the power of the wind and the waves, and realise how precious our resources are, such as water, fresh air, power, and fresh vegetables. You will become aware that what might be considered normal ‘back home’, is not so normal on a boat. Have you ever made your own bread or yoghurt? So simple, and healthy, and party of the daily routine on board our trips.

NATURE AWARENESS | Most of us spend more time indoors than outdoors. It’s easy to forget the natural world we’re coming from and living in. On the ocean, you face the wind and water elements and find that connection to nature. Imagine a scene with no traffic, news, pollution, or civilisation. Just wind and water – plenty of that! A scene where you can gaze for hours to the millions of stars above you; enjoy the dozens of dolphins sliding through the water at the bow of the boat; admire the pink-orange-red sunrises and sunsets, without any airplane trails changing the fluffy and cauliflower-like cloud patterns.

By being disconnected from everything but nature, you’ll learn a great deal about the ocean. When you see the good, bad and ugly with your own eyes, talk face-to-face with people living on and for the ocean, and experience its value, it makes you eager to learn more, do more, be more, and likely Live more: At sea.

You’ll become very aware of the natural world around you. This inspires. And it’s eye-opening. You come to realise how disconnected from nature we are in our daily lives. In the middle of nature, far away from civilisation, you will see human impact. Usually we’re far away. It’s hard to make it tangible. It doesn’t really affect us. Or so we think. But by being out there, you literally broaden your horizon. Experience will make you think, gain fresh perspectives, and may inspire you to act to turn the tide of the ocean challenges.

Eco Vibe Ocean Tribe

PEOPLE | We make our group big enough to guarantee a wonderful mix of inspiring souls, but small enough to drop anchor in the middle of nature. Participants usually don’t know each other, but after days of shared adventure and collaboration, new friendships are made. Many of our previous nomads come back again and again. Ocean Nomads come from all walks of life; we put a lot of effort in creating a diverse mix of people, so that we can learn from each other and pass on inspiration & ideas. Many trip alumni and members have since teamed up for more adventure and impact projects. All ages are welcome and encouraged to join. Reasons for joining are often the desire to live a nomadic lifestyle, buy a boat, share experience, and learn with safety, sustainability and accessibility aspects being taking care of.

TEAMWORK | Sailing is an active way of travel that requires teamwork. We share the tasks, operation, and sailing of the boat. We provision, cook, sail, and fix things (if necessary) together as a team. Our trips are not a laid-back luxury experience.
Hands-on participation creates the adventure, and helps you learn to be a better sailor. That said, for all our Caribbean trips we already have enough hands on board so you are welcome to sit back and relax if that's what you're after!

HEALTH | We can only do good if we feel good. Our trips include workshopping by and for each other and often include a combo of the following: yoga, breathwork / freedive, hiking, healthy and local food provisioning, and lots of outdoor action and adventure. They are powered by YOU, our members and crew.

PEACE | Our trips are not a party experience. We value the mornings and like to maximize daylight for exploring and connecting to nature. Drinking a lot of alcohol ruins this experience and has no place on our trips. We operate a strict no-alcohol-on board and non smoking on board policy. This trip will also differ to make sure everyone feels comfortable and so we can all connect. There will be no alcohol on board the boats. Sure, on shore, if you would like to enjoy a local beer or wine responsibly with dinner, no problemo.

ADAPTATION | Boats rock and make noise. They are small. People snore. Weather rules. We have limited resources. Adaptability is key. That said, these are charter boats that are certified and checked for safety according to local laws.

ACCESSIBILITY | Any age, gender, and experience level is welcome. We know a trip like this is not within everyone's financial reach. It costs considerable money to make this expedition real, in most safe way. But where resources allow, we facilitate scholarship opportunities to make an adventure like this accessible for the driven on a budget one, if we can afford it.

Adventure Time!

Adventure Time! image

Multi-Adventure

We'll be sailing in and out of different anchorages and islands. We have lot of ideas where to go. We let the route also depend on your individual wishes and preferences. Together we will  make it legendary!

ADVENTURE |  This trip will allow us to sail one way from Tenerife to one and more of the wilder Canary Islands. We get in some miles, ocean sailing time and make sure we all build our skills and experience.  We will include a mix of sailing, jumping in the sea, snorkeling, exploring islands, cooking, cultural interaction, freediving, hiking and relaxing. We try to avoid marinas, so we can be closer to nature.

SPONTANEITY | We run our trips rather spontaneously on purpose. We’re dependent on the weather. We go with the flow, and we may change course to explore what we find on the way. We embrace the art of getting lost. We don’t plan out our routes into detail. On purpose.

SAILING | You don’t need sailing experience. The Skipper that we are work is professionally qualified and teach you the basics (and much more if you want), helping you become a competent crew member, or building upon any existing skills you do have. We can sign off miles and give you a reference if you need one. We take care of onboard duties as a group.

Impact

For a healthier ocean

IMPACT | We share adventure and relaxation time, as well as thoughts, tips and ideas about how we can live more simply and sustainably, whilst exploring the natural world. No one of us has the answer, but together we do have. Connection and conversation at sea go deeper in one day than months on land.

LOCAL | We aim to team up with locals as much as possible to learn the best we can about the local situation. Working with a local partner involves different habits, customs, awareness levels, and cultural backgrounds. We stay open and look beyond our ‘eco-bubble’ to plot better routes for positive change.

GETTING THERE | We are aware that many need to fly to join one of our trips, and we encourage transport options such as train, bus, ferry, and car sharing. The Canary Islands can also be reached by ferry. We’re actively looking for the best ways to maximize our positive impact and minimize our negative impact.

ENVIRONMENT | We do what we can to minimize our environmental impact. We sail as much as possible and use the motor as little as possible. Preparation and doing your part is key. And we encourage and welcome your ideas, tools and tricks on improving our positive footprint.

PROVISIONING | Collectively, we take care of the provisioning and cooking. It’s part of the fun! We don’t organize luxury cruises. We aim to provision as locally as possible, and minimize plastic use. Our trips are vegetarian (fish and meat-free), with occasional opportunities to eat ashore if you struggle with this. We use less freshwater and power than the average sailboat charter. We share thoughts, ideas, and knowledge on no-fridge food preservation, eco-friendly sailboat maintenance, and other positive solutions.

CITIZEN SCIENCE | We team up with our friends from Sail & Whale, and where we can with other initiatives to learn about our ocean, its wildlife, and give back. As sailors and explorers we are the eyes of the ocean.
