Million Dollar Highway Scenic Drive & Lunch in Silverton

The Million Dollar Highway is a stunning stretch of U.S. Route 550 in southwestern Colorado, famous for its breathtaking views, challenging driving conditions, and historical significance. It runs for approximately 25 miles, connecting the towns of Silverton and Ouray through the San Juan Mountains.

Key Features:

Scenic Beauty:

  • The highway offers spectacular views of rugged mountain peaks, deep gorges, and dramatic cliffside landscapes. Travelers can see landmarks like Red Mountain Pass, Bear Creek Falls, and the Uncompahgre Gorge.
  • It is especially popular in the fall when the aspen trees display vibrant golden hues.

Engineering Feat:

  • Built in the late 1880s, the road was designed to support the region's mining industry. It's a marvel of engineering, with steep grades and tight hairpin turns carved into the mountainside.

Challenging Drive:

  • The highway lacks guardrails in many sections, adding to the excitement (and danger) of driving along its steep drops. Winter driving can be especially treacherous due to snow and ice.

Wildlife and Recreation:

  • The area around the highway is rich in wildlife, including elk and mountain goats. It also provides access to hiking, camping, and skiing.

The Million Dollar Highway is both a travel destination and a journey, offering a mix of natural beauty and adrenaline for those brave enough to tackle its dramatic curves.
