Full-day tour. Hike through the canyons and swim at the waterfalls of Santiago Apoala

This visit to Apoala will be akin to stopping at a Hobbit village in Middle Earth — it gives the sense of being a world apart. Situated in a deep and isolated canyon, the small village of about 200 indigenous Mixtec inhabitants, continues to live with only minimal contact with the outside world. Blessed with an abundant supply of spring water, the small farms that dot the valley produce several crops in a year’s time, supplying the villagers with most of what they need to survive. The chief industry is weaving straw into hats, baskets and animal figures.

We will observe a series of waterfalls formed by spring water as it plunges over a cliff on its way to join the Papaloapam River. The waterfalls are quite literally on the edge of town. Getting to them requires hiking down a very steep and challenging path, where steps are cut into the stone hillside. While handrails and ropes are provided, some visitors might choose to use the time to explore the village. However, the climb is easily worth the effort as the waterfalls are strikingly beautiful. Hikers may also want to explore the narrow canyon on the north edge of the valley, which requires a lot of rock hopping through the creek that meanders through. Finally, there are two major caves in the valley that may be a lure to some folks.

Come with us and enjoy this adventure. Commune with nature and chill out in the deep forest. Because of its altitude (6460 feet) and topography, Apoala is usually pretty cool. Visitors are well advised to bring several layers of clothing, including jackets, hats and gloves.

Meals are prepared either at the kitchen in the campground or at the tourism office in town. There are also a couple of small restaurants in Apoala.

Recommendations for the tour:

➡️ Bring sack lunches that we can eat during our break for lunch.
➡️ Light clothing. Especially in rainy season, please bring a long sleave t-shirt, mosquito repellent, comfortable shoes, cap and sunglasses. If you brought hiking shoes on your trip, you should consider wearing them.
