EUROVELO 7 goes from the North Cape to Malta. We ride it here from Verona to Bologna so to visit extraordinary UNESCO heritage cities (Verona, Mantua, Bologna) and have the chance to slowly discover often unrecognized territories: the Po Valley countryside reshaped by the hand of man, with its artistic and food&wine heritage.
Starting in Verona, we’ll discover Valpolicella area, then head South, to Mantua. We meet then Po and Secchia rivers, before intercepting the bicycle path on the old disused railway that from Mirandola has us pedaling safely to Osteria Nuova. We’ll discover small authenic towns as Mirandola and San Felice sul Panaro, and then reach Bologna, the city of a thousand
porticoes, soaring towers, ancient university and tasty cuisine.

We leave Verona direction South-West, towards Sommacampagna. Don’t miss a stop by the medieval castle of Valeggio sul Mincio, with its swallow-tailed Ghibelline battlements, or Borghetto sul Mincio, it’s the town of Tortellini! Riding by the green
Mincio river, today destination is Mantua, a charming medieval city surrounded by three lakes.
Overnight in Mantua.
From Mantua, we shortly plunge into the countryside, among canals and cultivated fields, pedaling along the Mincio River to Governolo, which was a fortified village with a castle, later destroyed. Now the partially buried waterworks, a tower with a clock and a few houses remain.
On the next stretch we skirt the Po, the longest river in Italy, with a wide basin, now partly sandy because of widespread drought. Our stop is Ostiglia, a simple, hard-working town that grew up along the river. To relax, a dip in the hotel pool awaits us.
Overnight in Ostiglia.
Crossing the bridge over the Po, we find the Secchia River and follow its winding course. Passing through the streets of Concordia sulla Secchia we can still see the wounds inflicted by the 2012 earthquake. We now head to Mirandola, the birthplace
of the Italian philosopher Giovanni Pico dei Conti della Mirandola, and then to our final destination: San Felice sul Panaro with the beautiful Rocca Estense.
Overnight in San Felice sul Panaro.
The route runs alongside the railroad of the Brenner-Bologna line.
We meet San Giovanni in Persiceto, which offers unexpected attractions: the Museum of Physics, small squares with splendid murals, very ancient history of Carnival, traces of which we can find scattered throughout the town. Then we head to Bologna, our great destination!
