Maximum benefits of travel insurance are available when purchased same day as the initial trip deposit.
We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation, as medical evacuations can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Payment will be expected in cash before the medevac can take place, if there is no insurance coverage. Neither the U.S. Embassy nor the U.S. government pays private medical bills overseas.
Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments.
Travel insurance is an essential safeguard for any traveler, offering peace of mind and financial protection against unforeseen circumstances. Whether embarking on a short weekend getaway or an extended international adventure, travel insurance provides coverage for a range of mishaps, including trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and flight delays. Without it, travelers risk significant financial losses and stress in the event of emergencies or disruptions during their journey. From unexpected illnesses to natural disasters, travel insurance ensures that travelers are not left stranded or burdened with exorbitant expenses. It's a small investment that can make a world of difference in ensuring a smooth and worry-free travel experience.
All U.S. Citizen travelers are encouraged to enroll into Smart Traveler Enrollment Program while traveling abroad. This is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to receive the latest security updates from the U.S. Embassy. Enrolling in STEP will help the U.S. embassy contact them and provide assistance during an emergency overseas.
U.S. government employees on official travel to Nepal must seek approval before traveling outside of Kathmandu Valley.

"This trip is non-refundable" means that if you choose to cancel or change your plans for any reason, you will not receive a refund for the money you've paid toward the trip.
When traveling to the Maldives, you'll want to fly into Velana International Airport (MLE), located on Hulhulé Island near the capital city of Malé. This is the main international gateway to the Maldives and serves as the central hub for connecting to the various resorts and islands throughout the country. Most international travelers arrive via major transit hubs such as Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, or Singapore, as there are limited direct flights from the U.S. and Europe. Upon arrival at Velana International, transfers to your resort are typically arranged in advance and may include a domestic flight, speedboat, or seaplane, depending on your island destination. Your departure will also be from MLE, so it’s essential to coordinate your resort transfers with your flight times to ensure a smooth journey both in and out of the country.
When you arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, your resort will take care of everything for the seaplane transfer to your island escape. Resort staff will greet you and guide you to the dedicated seaplane terminal or lounge. From there, they’ll assist with check-in, luggage handling, and transfers to the seaplane docking area. The resort ensures your flight is coordinated with your international arrival time, so there’s minimal waiting. Once aboard, you’ll enjoy a scenic aerial journey over the stunning atolls and turquoise waters as you make your way to your private slice of paradise.
All travelers entering the Maldives—including those from the U.S.—are required to complete the Traveller Declarationbefore arrival. This is a mandatory immigration requirement that ensures a smooth entry process upon landing at Velana International Airport (MLE).
The Traveller Declaration, also known as the IMUGA form, is an online form submitted to Maldives Immigration. It captures basic travel and health information and generates a QR code you'll need to present at immigration.
You must fill out the form within 96 hours of your flight’s departure to the Maldives.
Submit the declaration on the official government portal here:
https://imuga.immigration.gov.mv/traveller
Visit imuga.immigration.gov.mv
Click "Traveller Declaration"
Select "New Declaration"
Enter your passport details, flight information, accommodation, and health declarations
Submit the form and save the QR code you’ll receive (print or screenshot)
You’ll need to show this QR code at immigration upon arrival. It’s a quick and simple process, but don’t skip it—entry can be delayed or denied without it.
There is no cost to submit the IMUGA form—avoid third-party websites that charge fees.
Only arrivals need to complete this form. As of August 2024, departure submissions are no longer required.
Each traveler must complete a separate form, including children.
By submitting your IMUGA declaration on time, you'll ensure a smooth transition into paradise the moment you touch down in the Maldives.
What to Know When Flying into Malé, Maldives (MLE) from the USA
Traveling to the Maldives is a seamless experience when you're prepared. All international arrivals, including those from the United States, fly into Velana International Airport (MLE), located just outside the capital city of Malé. Here’s what you need to know before you land:
✅ Passport Requirements: Your passport must be machine-readable and valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
✅ Visa on Arrival: U.S. citizens are eligible for a free 30-day tourist visa upon entry. No prior application is needed.
✅ IMUGA Traveler Declaration: This is a mandatory form that must be completed within 96 hours of your flight. It’s quick, online, and generates a QR code you’ll show at immigration.
✅ Return or Onward Ticket: Be prepared to show proof of your departure from the Maldives.
✅ Proof of Accommodation: You’ll need to provide confirmation of your resort or hotel booking upon arrival.
✅ Sufficient Funds: While not always checked, officials may ask for proof of financial means (suggested amount: $100 per day per traveler).
✅ Yellow Fever Vaccine Certificate: Only required if you’re arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic.
✅ Blank Passport Page: You’ll need at least one blank page for your entry stamp.
Once you arrive at MLE, your resort will typically meet you just past customs to escort you to your speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight transfer, which they will have arranged in advance.
