Who is this Program For?

This itinerary is designed for Spanish learners who are ready for a language and cultural immersion experience:

  • Spanish learners: ready to practice their Spanish skills in an immersive travel experience.

  • Active travelers: This is an active travel experience. Participants can expect regular walking (sometimes on uneven terrain), stairs, periods of standing, travel days, and occasional hiking. We also aim to use Spanish as much as possible throughout the program, which can be both mentally challenging and also rewarding. Participants are encouraged to thoughtfully evaluate their personal readiness for these activities prior to enrolling. If you have any questions regarding accessibility or possible accommodations, please contact us. We’re happy to talk through the details so you can make an informed decision.

  • Culturally curious travelers: ready to learn about another culture and respect cultural differences.

  • Mindful travelers: as visitors to Oaxaca, travelers are expected to respect fellow group members and the local people, community, and culture, while contributing to a supportive and positive environment.

  • Teachers & educators: earn CEU hours and a program certificate (available upon request)

Spanish Immersion

Group members are expected to make their best effort to communicate in Spanish at all times with fellow group members, the local community, hotel staff, tour guides, etc, from the moment of arrival. The tours included in the program are given primarily in Spanish (although some guides may use English). Practicing your Spanish is a main focus of the program. This is your opportunity to immerse yourself and give your language skills a boost to the next level!

Requirements

  • Willingness and readiness to speak Spanish: from arrival, participants are expected to communicate in Spanish with both group members and the local community as much as possible.

  • Language Level: travelers MUST have a foundational understanding of the language. We will be speaking in Spanish together all week.

  • Commitment to learning: participants must dedicate time to studying and practicing their  Spanish language skills prior to departure.

  • Pre-departure Spanish class: a private conversation class with the group leader is highly encouraged.

  • Pre-departure group meeting: travelers MUST attend the required pre-departure group meeting to receive final information about the itinerary and meet other group members.

  • Preparedness: participants are encouraged to thoughtfully evaluate their personal readiness for the activities prior to enrolling (see itinerary details below).

Language Classes

Three Spanish classes in Oaxaca: The program includes three Spanish classes from local teachers while in Oaxaca. Classes are customized to focus on your language needs. They are also an opportunity for cultural exchange and direct connection to the local people, language, and culture.

A pre-departure Spanish conversation class with the group leader is highly encouraged to meet the travel leader and asses your Spanish level before travel.

Bilingual Program Leader

Elizabeth, the program leader, accompanies the group to provide language support and coordinate activities throughout the week. She organizes the tours, classes, activities, and transfers throughout the program so that travelers can focus on the experience and practicing their Spanish. Participants acknowledge and agree that all decisions regarding trip cancellations or modifications are at the discretion of The Language Traveler.

If The Language Traveler cancels a trip for reasons other than insufficient enrollment, participants will receive a full refund of payments made, minus any unrecoverable costs. Participants acknowledge that some costs may be nonrefundable and that a portion of the program price covers planning, coordination, and administrative services. We will make every reasonable effort to provide the maximum refund possible.
