Step back in time to explore an important chapter in our history at the Cacheu Slave Trail memorial museum, inaugurated in 2016. Nestled within the historic Cacheu fort, this poignant site is dedicated to remembering the era of the transatlantic slave trade.
The transformation of this building into a meaningful memorial is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the national association Action for Development, with crucial international support. As you wander through the memorial, you'll discover a multi-purpose pavilion, training rooms, and a residence for researchers, all designed to deepen your understanding of this dark period.
The heart of the memorial is the museum, which carefully preserves artifacts that provide insight into the daily lives of enslaved people. Some of these items were contributed by the local community, such as kitchen utensils, pots, chains, and irons used to mark the slaves after their harrowing journey. The presence of whips serves as a haunting reminder of the hardships endured.
Our mission is to narrate the story of our ancestors who, over 500 years ago, left our shores as "commodity men." The museum, situated beside the serene Cacheu River, offers a glimpse into this somber history.
Explore the captivating Cacheu Slave Port and Slave Museum, where history comes alive. Enjoy a flavorful lunch, and as the day comes to a close, relish a memorable dinner. This itinerary promises a day of reflection and learning, honoring the resilience of those who walked this path. Join us on this meaningful journey through time.
