Join Emily Hughes of Intentional Yoga and Adrienne White & Luke Andresen of the Sound Medicine Collective for a transformative autumn retreat at Barothy Lodge, a serene riverside haven nestled within the snow-covered stillness of the Manistee National Forest.
This retreat invites you to slow down, reconnect, and restore through yoga, sound, and nature. Experience yoga and meditation practices guided by Emily Hughes, immersive sound journeys and soulful workshops with Adrienne and Luke, a sacred cacao ceremony, and nourishing, locally sourced and organic meals prepared by Kalamazoo Umami.
Between sessions, unwind in one the hot tubs, enjoy peaceful walks through the forest, or simply listen to the sounds of the river winding through the snow-laden landscape. Cozy up by the fireplace with a cup from the hot cocoa bar and allow yourself to settle into quiet presence.
This will be a substance-free retreat (including alcohol and marijuana) to support clarity, connection, and deep rest.
In 1889, Dr. Arpad Barothy, a Hungarian immigrant and neurosurgeon, bought 80 acres along the Pere Marquette River, twenty miles east of Lake Michigan. Though based in Chicago, he opened a health retreat offering “healing mineral waters” to city dwellers seeking recreation and rest.
In 1915, he remodeled the farmhouse into what is now Main Lodge, adding six bedrooms, a dining area, and restaurant kitchen. Later, a tavern (Duffy’s), stable, and twenty-two more bedrooms (Long Lodge) were built.
Today, Barothy Lodge is a year-round wilderness getaway that balances history and modern comfort. Guests still come to enjoy nature and time with family and friends, far from daily stress.
Barothy now offers independent lodges, from 1-bedroom cabins to 9-bedroom Whitetail Lodge.
The property spans 300 acres within the Manistee National Forest, with the Pere Marquette River winding seven miles through it. Cool glacial waters support fishing, paddling, and abundant wildlife.
Fifteen private lodges line the river, all with walking access to amenities like a pool, fire pit, trails, tennis and volleyball courts, playground, ponds, and more. Lodges have no TVs or phones; cell service is limited, and WiFi is available but slow—encouraging guests to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Emily Hughes has spent over a decade teaching yoga to students of all levels. Emily earned her 200 hour certificate at IntentionalYoga in Kalamazoo, MI. She then attained her CPR/First Aid/AED certification through The American Red Cross and gained her SUP Yoga certification through Yen Yoga and Fitness in beautiful Traverse City, MI. Shortly afterward, Emily started her own SUP and beach yoga company on the Great Lakes.
For Emily, the calling of more yogic knowledge was so great that she ultimately decided to travel to India to study under the masters. Emily earned her 500 hour certificate with a specialization in Ayurveda at Ayuryoga Eco Ashram near Mysore, India. Then followed the sun to the fabulous Florida Keys, where she studied sound therapy & reiki, founded a non-profit organization through the practice of seva, taught within several local studios and at yoga festivals. Always a student, Emily spent a season giving and studying Karma Yoga at The Sivananda Ashram in The Bahamas. Since then, Emily has facilitated many workshops on Anatomy, Pranayama, Safety in Asana, Sanskrit Basics and more.
Following her Dharma, Emily has now facilitated and co-facilitated more than a dozen 200 and 300 hour Yoga Teacher Trainings nationally and internationally; living with a deep commitment and discipline to the teachings and yogic texts while guiding powerfully transformational classes with a pure and kind heart from Kalamazoo to Koh Samui and beyond.
The Sound Medicine Collective is a partnership, between Adrienne White & Luke Andresen, to hold space through sound for seekers on the path to their own healing. They offer a variety of Sound Journeys using sacred instruments including their wall of gongs, crystal & Tibetan bowls, drums, hand pan, chimes, didgeridoo, and voice through chanting mantra.
They have witnessed incredible releases from those participating in these sound experiences. The instruments, designed intentionally for healing, offer an effective and unique modality to release stuck traumas, emotions and allow the body and mind to relax and restore. Luke and Adrienne foster a spirit of compassion and understanding (they are both trained in trauma informed practices and Luke is a veteran healing from PTSD) which allow journeyers the chance to tap into areas of the psyche they normally wouldn’t easily go to. Science is now catching up and is confirming the profound effect that sound can have on humans. A deep state of relaxation and meditation can be achieved.
The Michigan based couple owns a wellness center called The Collective. Both Adrienne and Luke are certified Master Reiki practitioners, and reiki is woven into the sound healing sessions. They often collaborate with musician friends in their journeys including Detroit based music producer Gar Den Boi. The trio has released an album of Frequency Medicine targeting the Chakras through solfeggio tones, bass beats, live instruments and more.
