This local bakery with a traditional fire oven provides a tour for students and they prepare quesadilla bread, a traditional sweet bread of El Salvador.
There are many foods unique to Central America, and students are able to help prepare them using ingredients and techniques that are unfamiliar.
In El Salvador, dying fabrics with naturally occurring, indigo is an ancient art. There are shops that give a presentation to the students on how natural dyes are derived from plants and how designs are created using ink to dye clothing.
Salsa dancing is a Latin American dance tradition. A salsa dance instructor in Guatemala will lead a session in which students will be exposed to Spanish salsa music and will be taught the basic steps for salsa dancing.
Students provide free health screenings to the community during our pop-up health fair. Students are trained to take vital signs and are provided with their own blood pressure cuff and stethoscope to perform the screenings.
Students use their new Spanish skills to provide a presentation to elementary school students about nutrition and hygiene. Students are encouraged to sing songs with and learn from the children as they are providing information.
Students are able to volunteer by giving health screenings to incoming patients at a health clinic. Students are also able to observe medical visits which may include anything from a skin rash to medical emergencies and live births.
Students are able to attend medical home visits with local nurses. Students may assist with giving out nutrition supplements, weighing children, and may observe vaccinations.
