Photograph the Wild Beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks
Join Rad A. Drew for a Photography Workshop in Nags Head
Stretching like a ribbon between the Atlantic Ocean and the mainland, North Carolina’s Outer Banks offer a unique blend of dramatic seascapes, historic landmarks, and untamed natural beauty — the perfect canvas for photographers of all levels.
Join me for an immersive photography workshop based in Nags Head, where we’ll explore windswept dunes, iconic lighthouses, fishing piers, and the ever-changing light of coastal Carolina. From pastel sunrises over the Atlantic to golden-hour strolls through maritime forests and soundside fishing villages, this workshop offers endless inspiration and creative growth.
All cameras are welcome. I enjoy photographing with Fuji gear, love infrared, and have a special affinity for the iPhone. I'll be there to support you whether you're photographing with your DSLR, mirrorless, infrared camera, iPhone or all of the above as many of us do today. Whether you’re brand new to photography or looking to take your images to the next level, I’ll guide you with hands-on instruction, editing tips, and creative techniques.
My focus is on getting you to great locations and supporting you in anyway I can to fulfill your vision as a photographer. While I am always there for you, I will photograph along side of you. This ensures that I can quickly address questions about scenes, share camera settings, and suggest composition ideas.

All of my workshops are participant-only.
If a non-photographer companion (friend, or spouse) wants to join you on the workshop they will need to attend as a participant and pay the same tuition. This keeps our groups small, manageable, and fun!
The maximum group size for this trip is 10 participants.
These smaller groups are my preferred way to travel, teach, and photograph.
Many of our photographers over the years have asked for smaller groups and feedback about a group size of 10 or fewer has been overwhelmingly positive.
Smaller groups allow us to travel in smaller caravans when the group is driving. A smaller group makes our logistics easier and more convenient, and provides the opportunity to get to know, learn from, and share with other participants.
And, a smaller group means more attention and support (if you need it) as you photograph.
My intention as a group leader is to allow you to do your own thing, but to be there for you if/when you need support. If you have questions about composition, camera settings, infrared with your "big" camera or your iPhone, or anything else, I'll be more available to you with a smaller group.
This Trip is for Traditional, Infrared, and iPhone Photographers.
I want you to know participants use both traditional, infrared, and iPhone cameras. Many today travel with a variety of cameras and some only with their iPhone.
Whatever you're photographing with, I will be there to support you (if you need it), or stay out of your way if you don't!
While I enjoy supporting traditional photographers and infrared photography with converted "big" cameras, I also love the iPhone. I've been creating with the iPhone since my first iPhone 4 in 2009 and I've been amazed at the evolution of the iPhone in recent years! Today's iPhone is a tool worthy of our camera bag and for many, offers a way to travel light while still creating high quality photographs.
If you're an iPhone photographer, I'll support you in getting the most from your iPhone camera, camera apps, and processing tools. That includes creating infrared with the iPhone, which I've been exploring since the iPhone 11 Pro Max. (Please Note: When it comes to mobile photography, I'm most experienced with the iPhone. Android users are welcome with the understanding that I may not be able to assist with all aspects of your android camera, apps, accessories, or processing tools.)
I'll be there to support you in the field in creating great photos with your traditional camera, infrared camera, or iPhone.
Bottled water is provided each day.
We'll have at least one classroom session in addition to daily instruction in the field.
We'll meet by Zoom two to three weeks prior to the workshop so everyone can meet, discuss the workshop, and ask any last minute questions.
to the Outer Banks, including airfare and ground transportation.
You will need to have or share a car. We caravan to locations and encourage ride sharing. I will help you network with other participants to share transportation.
Links will be provided so you can book at the Holiday Inn Express Nags Head Oceanfront.
Complimentary Breakfast at hotel; For other meals we enjoy local venues and seasonal catch.
While I have a good idea what we'll see and when, I determine a specific itinerary only after I've scouted the region immediately before each workshop. Each day is planned based on weather and what I've learned about our locations.
Depending on the weather and cloud cover each day, we'll photograph locations throughout the Outer Banks that include lighthouses, coastal villages, fishing piers, sand dunes, sunrises over the Atlantic and sunsets on the various sounds.
My goal is to get you to photogenic locations at the right time of day, and make myself available to support you as needed. I will photograph along side of you, but mostly so I can share camera settings or show composition suggestions. Your questions and needs for support are why we're here and always take precedent over my photography.
