About your trip

Join Knee Deep Into History’s “They Shall Not Pass”: Verdun Tour and learn more about the war of attrition that characterized the Great War in 1916-17. For France and Germany, the battle of Verdun that began in February 1916 is synonymous with industrialized war. Hundreds of thousands of young French and German soldiers lost their lives or health during this period.

More recently, Verdun stands as a symbol of Franco-German reconciliation. In Sept. 2024 the two countries commemorated the 40th Anniversary of Kohl and Mitterand’s reconciliation summit in Sept. 1984.

More than 500 kilometers of trenches, countless monuments, dozens of fortresses and concrete structures can still be found on the battlefields. The battlefield is also dotted with large and small cemeteries, where the fallen rest. For all these reasons, Verdun is one of the most moving and impressive battlefields of the First World War and is worth a visit.

Get knee deep into history as we explore the context of the fighting and the individual human stories!
