For dedicated skiers and splitboarders eager to get on snow in the early season, northern Norway delivers even before the days grow long. Skiing by headlamp in the quiet Arctic night offers a unique and rewarding challenge, with thin daylight, crisp air, and long descents that test focus and skill. These journeys are designed for experienced backcountry riders ready to test their gear, warm up on real terrain, and step boldly into the heart of winter. Small groups keep the experience personal, and travelling early in the year offers the chance to enjoy this adventure at a more favourable price.
Explore deep winter 70° above the Arctic Circle with a week of intense skiing or splitboarding in the magical January light. From riding in your own headlamp bubble to the stunning blue or red light, get ready for some of the most exotic conditions.

Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights if the weather plays ball, and why not ski beneath them while you’re at it?
Travel with the best: IFMGA-certified guides who know the terrain inside out, balancing safety with deep local insight.
This trip is designed for skiers and splitboarders who are comfortable being out for full days, touring uphill and riding in weather that can sometimes turn challenging. Night skiing is great fun, but it requires extra focus and is therefore not suitable for ski touring beginners.
Average day: Expect to be outdoors for between four and seven hours each day. We will plan according to the weather and available light to ensure we show you the most beautiful moments and make the riding as enjoyable as possible. This may mean going out at unusual times (we can’t plan for the Northern Lights) or heading out more than once in a day.
Terrain: Langfjordbotn sits at the heart of a striking Arctic landscape, where deep fjords cut through broad valleys and peaks rise to nearly 900 metres (just over 2,952 feet). The surrounding mountains offer excellent ski touring and splitboarding opportunities for intermediate level and above.
Weather: Even in the depths of winter, the Gulf Stream helps keep the cold manageable. Temperatures below -20°C (-4°F) are rare. In the glow of Arctic winter light, you’ll learn how to stay warm and comfortable in the cold—immersed in nature without facing the most extreme conditions.

Expect a shared bathroom and single beds in cosy bedrooms—simple comforts that add to the charm of this authentic stay. For the final night, we’ll stay at the boutique hotel Altafjord Gjestegaard.
Dog sledding
If you want to experience something truly local and beautiful, we recommend trying dog sledding. It can be done instead of a ski day or in combination with it. Langfjordbotn is one of the main centres for this activity in Norway and a fantastic place to give it a try.
If you are interested in adding this activity to your trip, please contact us for further information. Send an email to: info@kmexperiences.com.

After your early afternoon arrival, we’ll drive about an hour (depending on the snow conditions) to Låvan Lodge. Following the winding shores of Altafjord, the mountains rise and the wilderness settles in—your first glimpse of the adventure ahead. Once at the lodge, we’ll gather for a warm welcome, sharing drinks and a cosy dinner by the water’s edge.
After breakfast, we’ll review your gear and will hand you out the strong headlamps (if you don’t have your own). Skiing that early in the season implies new routines and we will make sure everyone is ready before heading out.
As a first day, we will most likely take you to one of our favourite forest, where we’ll have the opportunity to do a few lapses to get acquainted with these new sensations.
The day’s route will be tailored to the group’s experience and energy, either a gentle warm-up loop or a more ambitious tour. Expect daylight climbs and headlamp descents as dusk falls.
Each evening, your guides will check in with the group to sketch out a plan for the next day, then fine-tune it in the morning based on the latest snow and weather. With decades of experience in the region, they’ll take you where conditions are best.
No two days will be the same, but each one is chosen with care. One day might take you deep into powder-filled glades, the next to a silent ridgeline with ocean views. These routes are just a short drive away, but they’re the kind that few ever reach—remote and condition-dependent but always worth the effort.
We’ll have extra attention to the light, to make sure you get to experience why this season is so special, and you’ll get to discover the blue light, the long sunsets and the meditative magic of the darkness.
Back at the lodge, the rhythm will slow: recover in a wood-fired sauna, refuel with chef-made meals and reflect on the day’s descent.
We’ll make the most of our last day and wrap up the week with a few more unforgettable descents. Back at the lodge, we’ll gather for a festive farewell dinner and toast to our Arctic adventure.
Depending on your flight time, you can join us on a visit to the Alta Museum and World Heritage Rock Art Centre. When you’re ready, we’ll drive you to the airport and say our final goodbyes.
