Why Climb Kilimanjaro?
At 5,895 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and one of the world’s most iconic trekking experiences. The 7-day Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” offers trekkers an adventurous and scenic journey through Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforest to alpine desert, and eventually to the breathtaking snow-capped summit.
A Journey Through Diverse Landscapes
As you ascend Kilimanjaro, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes, from misty forests and moorlands to volcanic rock formations and glaciers. Each day reveals new perspectives of the mountain and stunning views across Tanzania and Kenya. Along the way, you'll have opportunities to witness unique wildlife and experience the magic of Kilimanjaro’s ever-changing environment.
An Epic Adventure
The 7-day Machame Route is perfect for trekkers seeking both a physical and mental challenge, with the added advantage of better acclimatization due to its gradual ascent. Led by our experienced guides, this route offers a thrilling and rewarding experience for adventurers. Conquering Kilimanjaro’s summit is a life-changing achievement that provides memories to last a lifetime.
Scenic and Adventurous
The Machame Route is known for its stunning and varied landscapes, offering trekkers a more adventurous experience than other routes. From the lush rainforest of the lower slopes to the rocky Shira Plateau and the breathtaking Barranco Wall, each day presents a new challenge and a different view of Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems.
Ideal for Acclimatization
The Machame Route follows a “climb high, sleep low” approach, which provides better acclimatization and increases your chances of reaching the summit successfully. The additional time on this 7-day trek allows your body to adjust to the altitude more gradually, offering a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Expert Guidance
Our guides are highly experienced with the Machame Route’s specific terrain and challenges. They provide in-depth knowledge of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic history, flora, and fauna, ensuring you not only reach the summit safely but also gain a deeper understanding of the mountain’s natural beauty.
Remote and Less Crowded
Compared to other routes, the Machame Route takes you on a more remote and scenic path, reducing the number of trekkers you’ll encounter. This allows for a more intimate and peaceful experience as you immerse yourself in the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s wilderness.
Challenging Yet Rewarding
The Machame Route is perfect for trekkers seeking a thrilling challenge with the reward of incredible views and a life-changing summit experience. The route’s diverse terrain keeps the adventure exciting, from scrambling up the Barranco Wall to the final push to Uhuru Peak.

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll be driven to Machame Gate (1,800m), the entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park and the official start of your trek.
The adventure begins with a 5-7 hour hike through the lush, dense rainforest, where you’ll likely spot blue monkeys, birds, and vibrant plant life. The trail is well-marked but often damp and muddy, so your guide will offer tips for navigating the terrain. As you ascend, the sounds of the forest accompany you, providing a serene yet adventurous atmosphere.
By the time you reach Machame Camp (2,835m), you’ll have already experienced one of the most enchanting environments Kilimanjaro has to offer.

After a good breakfast at camp, you’ll begin today’s trek into Kilimanjaro’s moorland zone. The change in landscape is immediate and striking, with low-lying shrubs and unique vegetation like giant heathers replacing the rainforest.
The 4-6 hour trek is steeper today, but as you gain altitude, the expansive views over the Shira Plateau reward every step. Keep an eye out for exotic plants like the giant lobelia, which thrive in this rugged environment.
Upon arriving at Shira Camp (3,750m), you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. After settling in, you’ll enjoy an evening at camp, where the temperature starts to drop, giving you a taste of the higher altitudes to come.

Today is a crucial day for acclimatization, designed to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude.
After breakfast, you’ll embark on a 6-8 hour trek that takes you first to Lava Tower (4,600m), a dramatic rock formation that rises high above the surrounding landscape. The trek to Lava Tower is challenging due to the altitude, but the views of the rugged terrain make it unforgettable.
After a rest and lunch at Lava Tower, you’ll descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, where the air is thicker and the vegetation more lush. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is one of the best ways to prepare your body for the altitude ahead.
After arriving at Barranco Camp (3,960m), the evening is spent relaxing and soaking in the views of the impressive Barranco Wall, which you’ll conquer tomorrow.
Overnight at Barranco Camp (3,960m).
The day begins with an exhilarating challenge: scaling the Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, this 257-meter-high rock face is more of a scramble than a technical climb, and your guides will ensure you navigate it safely. As you ascend, the views only get better, with panoramic vistas of the Barranco Valley and the landscape below.
After conquering the wall, the trail eases, leading you across rolling ridges and valleys towards Karanga Camp (4,035m). The 4-5 hour trek offers plenty of photo opportunities, with stunning views and unique geological formations.
Once you arrive at Karanga Camp, you’ll have time to rest, explore the surrounding area, and enjoy a hot dinner as the temperature drops in the evening.
Overnight at Karanga Camp (4,035m).
Departing Karanga, you’ll traverse the stark, high alpine desert en route to Kosovo Camp (4,800m), perched just above Barafu. Though the trek is relatively short—about 3–4 hours—it can feel demanding due to the steep gradient and thinning air. You’ll first pass through Barafu Camp for a brief rest and refresh before continuing the final stretch up to Kosovo.
This elevated, quieter campsite offers a more exclusive experience with fewer crowds, allowing you to soak in the raw landscapes in greater solitude. Beyond the peaceful ambiance, the extra 160 meters gained by staying at Kosovo significantly shortens and eases the all-important final push to Uhuru Peak, setting you up for a more comfortable and efficient summit bid.
Once settled in, the remainder of the day is yours to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the midnight ascent to the roof of Africa.
Overnight at Kosovo Camp (4,800m).
The most exciting and challenging day of your trek begins around midnight. After a light snack, you’ll set out under a sky filled with stars, following the steep path up to Stella Point (5,730m).
The 6-8 hour climb to the summit is mentally and physically demanding, but with each step, you draw closer to your goal. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming. The sunrise from the summit is an awe-inspiring sight, with sweeping views over the plains and glaciers below.
After taking in the moment and snapping your summit photos, you’ll begin the long descent back to Kosovo Camp for a brief rest. From there, you’ll continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m), where you’ll spend the night, exhausted but exhilarated after your incredible achievement.
Overnight at Mweka Camp (3,100m).
After a well-deserved night’s rest, you’ll enjoy breakfast at Mweka Camp before making your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). The trek takes about 3-4 hours, and the lush surroundings offer a peaceful end to your Kilimanjaro adventure.
At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, marking your incredible achievement. From there, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a hot shower and some much-needed relaxation.
In the evening, you’ll gather with your team for a celebratory farewell dinner, where you can reflect on the unforgettable journey you’ve just completed.

After breakfast at your hotel, our team will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
