About your trip

Embark on an unforgettable 10-day, 9-night hut-to-hut trekking adventure through the heart of the Fassa Dolomites in Northern Italy. This classic Dolomites route explores a quieter region of the Alps with fewer crowds, traversing six iconic mountain ranges and showcasing an incredible diversity of alpine landscapes, from meadows and glacial valleys to limestone peaks and mountain passes. Each day ends in charming mountain huts (rifugios), widely regarded as some of the most comfortable in the Dolomites, where you’ll enjoy hearty alpine meals and unforgettable evenings in the mountains. The trek is fully supported by two professional UIAGM-certified mountain guides, with all logistics handled, including accommodations, some meals, and group airport transfers to and from Venice Marco Polo Airport.

Highlights

This trip is packed with adventure and offers an unforgettable way to experience the magic of the Italian Dolomites on a hut-to-hut trekking route. Here’s what’s in store:

  • Trek through six iconic Dolomite mountain ranges - Monzoni, Marmolada, Sella, Sassolungo, Antermoia, and Rosengarten - showcasing an incredible diversity of alpine landscapes all on one trek

  • Experience a true hut-to-hut adventure while staying in what are known as some of the most comfortable huts (rifugios) in the Dolomites, including incredible mountaintop views at the iconic Rifugio Kostner and sweeping 360° panoramas at Rifugio Sasso Piatto, which is surrounded by the largest alpine pasture in Europe.

  • Trek through dramatic scenery including the lunar landscapes of the Sella Group, sweeping alpine meadows around Passo Sella, views of the Marmolada glacier, the remote “lost world” of Antermoia, and the iconic Vajolet Towers - all with fewer crowds than the traditional Alta Via 1 trail/other more heavily traveled routes

  • Hike with confidence alongside two professional UIAGM-certified mountain guides, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the scenery and experience while all navigation, logistics, and safety are handled for you

Activity Level

Activity Level: Very High

The Fassa Dolomites trek is a physically demanding, multi-day hut-to-hut adventure designed for experienced hikers who are comfortable with long days on trail and sustained elevation changes. Expect 8 full hiking days, with daily distances ranging from approximately 6 to 11.5 miles and 5 to 7 hours of hiking per day. Elevation gain on hiking days generally ranges from 2,600 to 4,100 feet, with elevation loss ranging from 2,200 to 4,200 feet depending on the day. The highest point of the trek reaches approximately 10,300 feet, weather permitting, on the Piz Boè summit day. Trails are well-established mountain paths but can be rocky and uneven, with sections of exposed terrain typical of high alpine trekking. While no via ferrata or technical climbing is required, hikers should be confident navigating steep ascents, sustained descents, and long days. This trek is comparable in overall difficulty to Alta Via 1.

This trip is built for intermediate hikers and above. It’s an ideal adventure for those with prior multi-day trekking experience or hikers ready to challenge themselves with a point-to-point route. You will be carrying your own pack each day (there is no luggage transfer on this trip, any additional luggage can be stored at basecamp) with all your personal belongings for the entire trek plus your picnic lunch and water for the day.  For this reason, good physical fitness is essential and previous experience with hikes over 5 miles, hiking several days in a row, and carrying a backpack during hikes (backpacking) is essential to get the most out of the trek.

Important: If a participant is deemed unable to safely complete the trek by the certified trekking guide, no refunds will be issued, and the participant will be responsible for arranging and covering their own transportation home.

Accommodation Details

This adventure begins and ends with stays at a comfortable 4-star basecamp hotel, allowing for a relaxed start to the trip and a celebratory final night after completing the trek. Hotel rooms are typically double occupancy and shared among participants.

During the trek, nights are spent in a series of mountain huts (rifugios), many of which are considered among the most comfortable in the Dolomites. These huts are often located in spectacular high-alpine settings and are a core part of the hut-to-hut experience. While accommodations are rustic and communal, they are warm, welcoming, and an integral part of the experience. Expect shared dormitory-style sleeping quarters (including bunk beds) and shared bathrooms and showers (hot water may be limited or timed depending on the hut).

Standout stays along the route include:

  • Rifugio Kostner, renowned for its mountaintop location, panoramic terrace, and exceptional meals overlooking the Sella Group

  • Rifugio Sasso Piatto, set at the foot of Sassopiatto with sweeping 360° views across the Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest alpine pasture

  • Rifugio Des Alpes, another hut with spectacular views of Sassolungo, Sella, Pordoi, and Marmolada

Meals at the rifugios are typically served family-style with set menus, typically featuring hearty local specialties. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice. Evenings often include gathering around long tables for drinks, conversation, and laughter with fellow hikers from around the world. Staying in these rifugios is a highlight of Dolomite treks, offering both an authentic trekking experience and incredible views right outside your door.
