About your trip

What to Expect

Join us in magical Tonga and swim with gentle giants in the experience of a lifetime!

Having travelled all over the world in search of the most unique marine interactions, we are proud to share what might just be our best adventure expedition so far… We have found an incredibly quiet island paradise where our boutique accommodation, consisting of just five rooms, is the only building for miles around!

Disconnect from the hustle, the bustle, and reconnect with yourself as you glide beneath the waves in search of truly incredible marine interactions.

The Haʻapai Islands of Tonga remain one of the most untouched whale destinations in the world, and whilst Tonga IS popular as a whale swimming destination, few travellers make it to this remote corner.

Every year, humpback whales gather to give birth, nurse their calves, and socialize in warm tropical waters after migrating thousands of miles from Antarctica.

Unlike many other places where boats crowd around animals, the Haʻapai region remains remarkably quiet. Only a small number of boats operate across the entire island chain, meaning many encounters happen without other vessels nearby. This creates calm, respectful interactions where whales often approach swimmers out of curiosity.

Our experienced guides read whale behaviour carefully and only allow swimmers into the water when whales appear calm and receptive. Decades of experience, paired with very small numbers of other boats, allow for intimate and magical encounters.

Witness mothers and calves resting gently together on the seafloor, curious juveniles approaching swimmers slowly from the deep, and sometimes males competing nearby with breaching and tail slapping activity.

With a hydrophone onboard, we can also listen to the haunting songs of humpback whales echoing through the ocean, a unique way to feel closer to these ancient beings.

Beyond whales, the waters of Tonga are alive with marine life. Megapods of hundreds of dolphins frequently ride the bow of the boat, manta rays glide beneath the surface, and false killer whales occasionally pass through these deep waters.

Evenings on the island are just as magical as the days at sea. Expect sunset swims, beach bonfires, shared family-style meals, educational talks about whale behaviour, and the quiet beauty of a remote Pacific island.

Why Travel to Tonga With Us?

The Kingdom of Tonga is one of the only places on Earth where it is legally permitted to swim with humpback whales. Each year, these magnificent animals migrate thousands of miles from Antarctica to the warm tropical waters of the South Pacific to give birth and raise their calves.

While several regions in Tonga offer whale tourism, the Haʻapai Islands remain one of the most untouched and special. This island chain sits between Tongatapu and Vavaʻu and is home to only a small number of tourism operators. Vast stretches of ocean remain completely quiet and uncrowded. We stay at the ONLY accommodation option on our end of the island, so you won’t see any other guests outside of our group. This is a truly intimate and unique expedition.

In contrast to destinations like Moorea or Vavaʻu, where boat traffic can be high during peak whale season, Haʻapai offers something rare: space! Fewer boats mean calmer waters, less pressure on the whales, and more natural and curiosity-led interactions.

Our guides are experienced marine professionals who prioritize whale welfare above everything else. We never chase whales or force encounters. Instead, we wait for whales to show curiosity and interest before we enter the water.

These respectful practices often result in extraordinary interactions where whales approach swimmers on their own terms and engage with playful curiosity.

Traveling with Elsewheria means fully immersing yourself in this remote ocean environment without worrying about logistics. Our island base, experienced guides, and carefully designed itinerary create an intimate expedition where guests arrive as strangers but leave as friends connected by a shared love for the ocean.
