On day 1 you arrive in the magical Tanzania. The anticipation and excitement builds as you're transferred from Kilimanjaro Airport and en-route to the airport, the majestic Kilimanjaro is visible to you for the first time.
You arrive at the Team hotel, check in and then have the rest of the day to relax, depending on your arrival time.
We will gather in the evening of day 1 to dine together and get to know your fellow summiteers.
Day 2: The second day is for final kit checks, final questions and some more time to relax by the pool. You'll be introduced to our lead guide from the ground team who will in the early evening, provide a safety briefing, answer any questions about the Mountain you may have and to get you set for the early start the following morning.
The anticipation and excitement is now high!
Day 3 is an early start, with the transport to the starting gate leaving the hotel at 7am.
We start from Londrossi gate as we're taking the Lemosho route to the roof of Africa. The transfer time is approximately 3 1/2 hours from the hotel, so settle in and soak up the amazing scenery and landscapes of beautiful Tanzania.
We arrive at the gate around 10:30 to 11:00. Disembark and we begin the registration / signing in process that all participants are required to do.
You will need your passport number!! Take a picture of it on your phone rather than bring it with you.
Once everyone is signed in and lunch (which is included!) is finished and the bags have been checked by gate security, the porters and ground team set off and we get our back packs on and start our first day of the challenge.
This will take us through the incredible Rain Forest to Shira 1 Camp (also know as Mkubwa).
We rise only 650 meters on this 4.5 to 5 hour trek, providing a gentle start to the challenge, some altitude and our first taste of the magical Kilimanjaro.
Our second day starts with breakfast and morning briefing around 7am. Today we hike through the lower alpine moorland to Shira II camp via Shira I camp
The trail climbs gently over the rolling hills, crossing several streams as we make our way along the Shira ridge.
We reach Shira I camp at around 12pm where we take a scenic lunch. After lunch we continue on to Shira II camp.
From here, you'll enjoy your first panoramic view of Kibo peak as the Mountain reveals it's self in all it splendour.
Breakfast and morning briefing at 7am before we trek to Barranco Camp Via Lava Tower (at 4600m).
The scenery continues to change, with lunar style landscapes, new vegetation and vistas that take your breath away. We arrive at Lava Tower where lunch will be waiting for us. We spend around an hour at this altitude, enabling our bodies to acclimatise.
Once lunch is complete, we trek down through the valley with waterfalls, streams and unique trees only found on Kilimanjaro as company. We drop below 4000m to sleep at lower altitude at Barranco camp.
Enjoy the fantastic view of the western breach and the breach wall, for tomorrow we climb!
Breakfast and morning briefing at 7am before we start traversing from the west side of the Barranco wall.
The wall looks imposing until we get close and you can see the trails that traverse it and enable you to make your way to the top. Our experienced ground team are constantly on hand for the trickier bits and to assist at the Kissing wall.
Once past that, some small scrambles and additional trails will see you get to the top and feel that adrenaline and huge sense of achievement... al while taking in the breathtaking views down the valley.
After a stop for some food and to rest the legs, we trek through the Karanga valley to camp. The camp seems closer than it is as the ravine provides a cheeky additional descent and ascent before reaching the camp.
We arrive at Karanga camp where dinner and rest awaits. The camp offers a variety of breathtaking views of the summit followed by the lights of Moshi at night.
Having taken in the amazing sight from Karranga camp, we rise early and start our trek to Upper Barafu camp, the last stop before we go for the Summit to the Roof of Africa.
Breakfast and morning briefing at 7am before we embark on a shorter walk crossing through the Heath/Moorland and into the alpine desert ascending from just under 4000m through Barafu camp at and onto Upper Barafu / Kosovo camp at 4,870 meters (15,978 feet). As much as you'll question why we're not just basing ourselves at Barafu, once we've completed the extra 45m to 1 hour push to Kosovo camp, you'll be grateful we did!
We aim to arrive at camp very early afternoon where lunch will be provided. You're then strongly encouraged to get into your tent and rest & sleep if possible as we go for summit at Midnight.
Our ground team will wake you around 10:30 with a hot drink and the draw of your meal before we push for the summit. Over dinner, the lead guides will provide a briefing, giving the summiteers a final kit check, advice on the weather and ensuring all the tips we've discussed for this moment have been taken on board.
With our head torches on, our kit and water all ready and our warm clothes on, we set off at midnight, traversing the mountain towards Stella point. We take this final section very slowly to ensure the best chance of reaching the summit.
The dark night is often broken by the sound of song from our incredible ground team, providing you welcome distraction, support and cheer as we make our way to the top.
We reach Stella Point around 7am, hitting the crater rim, where we aim to be met with the most incredible sunrise! Here we take a rest, have a hit of ginger tea that our porters have carried up for us and feel the rush of knowing no more steep ascents are ahead, only the short walk to the very highest point - Uhuru peak.
We take the slow traverse across to the summit, a 45 minute walk. The sign appears from around the corner, giving you that added incentive and drive to make it to the roof of Africa.
Celebrations and emotions will spill over at the incredible your and your fellow summiteer's achievement. We're now at 5,895m. Take photos, videos and unfurl the banners to record something incredible.
We then take the 2 hour descent to Kosovo camp via the trail to the left of the route up, scree and lose stone require careful negotiation, walking poles at this stage come into their own as great support for your descent.
We take a short break at Kosovo for lunch and s short rest before we trek triumphant to Mweka camp for sunset and dinner.
This is your final night on the magical Kilimanjaro, fresh in the knowledge of your amazing achievement. The final evening meal on the mountain is full of story, laughter, awe and quiet reflection. Rest comes very easily on this final night!
Departing after breakfast we head to Mweka gate, taking in our last views of Kibo. Arriving at Mweka gate is magical and we get to say thank you and goodbye to the amazing ground team. Song, dance and emotion all spill over as we celebrate the completion of a unique moment in our lives that will stay with us forever.
Once everyone is signed out from the park and that cold Kilimanjaro beer from the shop has hit the spot, we transfer a short distance to the restaurant for a well deserved and earned lunch.
Once lunch is complete, souvenirs purchased, laughter and stories swapped and the bonds firmly made with both the ground team and each other, we entrust the KPAP (Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project) representatives with the tips for the ground team. It is VERY important that all tip money is given to them for it to be properly registered and distributed fairly.
Once this is complete, we say our final goodbyes to the amazing ground team and we transfer to the team hotel for the best shower you will ever have! The silence on the coach, as those asleep do so with smiles on their faces and those taking in the beautiful Tanzanian scenery is mezmorising and a reflection of just how monumental the undertaking was.... and how you have succeeded in finding your summit.
The evening completed with drinks, dinner and certificate ceremony, where we celebrate our and each other's achievements. Together, as one family and band of summiteers, we reflect and congratulate the incredible, life-changing experience we've gone through.
For most people, this is the final day in Tanzania. The lie in, in an actual bed is thoroughly deserved! Another wonderful hot shower is followed by a relaxed breakfast where aches and reflections and favourite times and spots on the mountain are discussed and shared.
For those with time, relaxation by the pool beckons, or book yourself in for a well deserved and earned massage.... give back to those muscles!
When you're all set, we bid farewell to our fellow summiteers and newfound Kilimanjaro family to start the journey home. We’ll transfer you to the airport to head home a successful summiteer!
