Litchfield National Park is one of the most spectacular and accessible national parks in Australia’s Northern Territory. Located just 100 km southwest of Darwin near the township of Batchelor, Litchfield covers over 1,500 square kilometres of rugged sandstone escarpments, tropical forests, waterfalls, and iconic wildlife habitats. With over 260,000 visitors each year, Litchfield is a must-see destination in the Top End — and a highlight of any Northern Territory adventure.
Litchfield was officially proclaimed a national park in 1986 and is named after Frederik Henry Litchfield, a pioneering explorer who travelled through the Daly River region in 1864. Since its protection, the park has become one of Australia’s most beloved nature-based tourism icons.
Litchfield’s dramatic escarpments, lush woodlands, and crystal-clear plunge pools are what make it a standout destination. The central sandstone plateau supports thriving eucalypt forests dominated by Darwin woollybutt, Darwin stringybark, banksias, grevilleas, and other Top End flora.
At the base of the escarpments and in narrow gorges shaped by ancient waterfalls, you’ll find patches of monsoon rainforest — dense, lush and largely undisturbed. These rainforest pockets are home to water lilies, ground orchids, pandanus palms, paperbarks, and swamp bloodwoods.
Litchfield National Park is a biodiversity hotspot and a haven for native wildlife. Some of the most common species you may encounter on a private Litchfield tour include:
Agile wallaby
Antilopine kangaroo
Dingo
Sugar glider
Northern brushtail possum
Fawn antechinus
Black and little red flying foxes
Nocturnal animals like the northern quoll, northern brown bandicoot, and ghost bat also inhabit the park. Near Tolmer Falls, visitors may catch a glimpse of the rare orange leaf-nosed bat in its natural cave habitat.
Litchfield is also a paradise for bird lovers, offering sightings of over 200 bird species. Notable birds include:
Black kite and other raptors during the dry season
Figbird, spangled drongo, rainbow bee-eater
Pacific koel, dollarbird, yellow oriole, and the Torres Strait pigeon
Waterfalls like Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, and Buley Rockhole attract honeyeaters and orange-footed scrubfowl that feed on the abundant native fruits.
The Finniss River section of the park is known for hosting saltwater crocodiles (or “salties”), especially during the wet season. Other reptiles such as frill-necked lizards and monitor lizards are commonly seen along forest paths and waterholes — though they tend to hide during the cooler months.
Litchfield is world-famous for its swimmable waterfalls. Whether you're cooling off in the cascading rock pools or taking a scenic walk to a lookout, these are the park’s most iconic natural attractions:
Florence Falls – a double waterfall plunging into a shaded swimming hole
Wangi Falls – the largest and most photographed falls in the park, with easy access for all
Tolmer Falls – a dramatic, high drop into a deep gorge (no swimming, but a spectacular view)
Buley Rockhole – a series of small cascading pools, perfect for relaxation
Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) and Surprise Creek Falls – accessible only by 4WD on a private tour, offering secluded beauty and fewer crowds
One of Litchfield’s most unusual and popular attractions is the magnetic termite mounds. These perfectly aligned, wedge-shaped mounds can reach over 2 meters tall and are aligned north to south to regulate temperature. Built by termites that feed on grass roots in flood-prone plains, the mounds rise above water level and act as natural air-conditioners — an architectural feat by nature’s smallest engineers.
