Day dedicated to exploring Addis Ababa. Little known by most travelers, as they usually pass through, Addis Ababa is a fascinating world to discover. It is worth noting that the Ethiopian city, at 2,400 meters above sea level, is one of the highest capital cities in the world.
We will visit the Entoto Mountains, where Menelik II settled before founding the city. From these mountains, which in some points rise up to 3,000 meters, we will be able to see the dimensions of the capital. Next, we will discover the secrets of Lucy, one of the most important paleontological discoveries in history, at the National Museum, and, if time allows, we will visit an Ethiopian Orthodox church.
After breakfast, we drive from Bahar Dar to Gondar, the former imperial capital founded by Emperor Fasilidas. Once there, we explore the historic center, including the impressive Fasil Ghebbi castle complex—often called the “Camelot of Africa”—with its six castles, tunnels, and royal structures.
We then visit the bath of King Fasilidas, a historic 16th-century site believed to have been used for ceremonies, before concluding the day at the monastery of Debre Birhan Selassie, famous for its striking interior paintings, including the iconic ceiling of angelic faces.
DAY 5 :
Fly to Lalibela, stopping en route at Nakute La’ab, a cave church with sacred pools and religious treasures. Continue to Lalibela, known as the “African Jerusalem” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Explore the first group of rock-hewn churches, including the impressive Medhane Alem and the beautifully decorated Bete Mariam. Connected by tunnels and trenches, these underground churches are among the world’s most remarkable sites. Spend the day discovering Lalibela’s spiritual and architectural wonders before wandering its charming streets.
DAY 6:
In the afternoon, we will continue exploring the rock-hewn churches in the city center. From the second group of churches, highlights include Gabriel–Rufael (characterized by a deep trench), Amanuel, and Abba Libanos. We will also visit the isolated Bete Giorgis, famous for its cross-shaped layout and relatively small interior, where a dome stands out that is not visible from the outside. Probably the most spectacular monolithic church of all. We will use the ancient tunnels that connect the churches to move from one to another.
Flight to Addis Ababa. Once in the capital, we will have lunch and a vehicle at our disposal to visit some of the most emblematic neighborhoods of Addis Ababa, such as Piazza, or to see Merkato. Farewell dinner and transfer to the airport.
