Day 2 Jeruzalem

Day 2 Jeruzalem image

Jeruzalem Wine Route

Jeruzalem is a scenic hilltop wine area in northeastern Slovenia’s Ljutomer–Ormož subregion, near the Croatian border, known for terraced vineyards and aromatic white wines.

Vineyards climb 250–350m slopes between Drava and Mura rivers, with views from the 341m ridge and Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. Cool-climate whites like Šipon (Furmint), Rieslings, Sauvignon, and Chardonnay thrive on sandy-marl soils, offering fresh acidity and fruit.

Explore via wine road from Ljutomer or Ormož, with tastings at family cellars, tourist farms, and cycling paths through hamlets like Svetinje.

Later visit to Središče ob Dravi, in Slovenia’s Jeruzalem wine region, which is a hub for traditional pumpkin seed oil production at family mills like Jeruzalem Šat Oljarna.

Day 3 Ptuj & Cellars

Day 3 Ptuj & Cellars image

Ptuj Castle overlooks Slovenia's oldest town with Roman roots

Ptuj Castle overlooks Slovenia's oldest town, situated on the Drava River, with roots dating back to Roman Poetovio, where legions proclaimed Emperor Vespasian in 69 AD.

As Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio, the site hosted the fortress of Legio XIII Gemina, yielding artifacts such as mosaics, inscriptions, and tombs now displayed in the castle museum, which reflect its role as a Pannonian hub until the Hunnic raids in 450 AD.

The medieval fortress, rebuilt from the 12th century by Salzburg archbishops and lords of Ptuj, features Romanesque towers, Renaissance arcades, and vaulted cellars ideal for wine tastings amid Podravje's vineyards. Today, it houses arms collections, art, and events, pairing history with local Rieslings just minutes from the Jerusalem hills.

Day 4 Bled and Ljubljana

Day 4 Bled and Ljubljana image

Visit lake Bled and Ljubljana, Slovenia’s small, relaxed capital

Bled Island, Slovenia's only island, hosts the 17th-century Church of the Assumption; reach it via traditional pletna boats, climb 99 steps, and ring the wishing bell. Bled Castle, the country's oldest from 1011, perches 130m above the water with museum exhibits, wine cellars, and panoramic lake views.

Walk the 6km lakeside path for swans and mountain vistas, or swim in summer (water up to 30m deep with fish like trout). Vintgar Gorge, a short bus ride away, offers wooden walkways over rushing rapids and waterfalls.

Ljubljana is Slovenia’s small, relaxed capital, known for its café-lined river, green spaces, and elegant architecture by Jože Plečnik.

The old town along the Ljubljanica River has cobbled streets, colorful townhouses, and several distinctive bridges, including the Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge, which link historic and modern parts of the center. Above the city, Ljubljana Castle stands on a hill with views over the rooftops and Alps, reachable on foot or by funicular, and it now hosts exhibitions, events, and restaurants.

Ljubljana is recognized as a very walkable, bike-friendly, and “green” city, with much of the center reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Riverside markets and food stalls near the central market showcase local produce, while restaurants and wine bars serve Slovenian dishes and regional wines in a relaxed atmosphere.

Furthermore, boat trips on the Ljubljanica are a relaxing way to see Ljubljana’s old town, bridges, and green outskirts from the water.
